GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything. -

It's her birthday. The candles on the birthday cake are lit. But all of her loved ones have sent their apologies - they're not coming. So she takes her pretty car and leaves her pretty suburban neighborhood to get lost in the big sunny city of Marseille. CAST ____________________________________________________________________ Ariane ASCARIDE Jacques BOUDET Jean-Pierre DARROUSSIN Anaïs DEMOUSTIER Youssouf DJAORO Adrien JOLIVET Gérard MEYLAN Lola NAYMARK Judith MAGRE, doing the voice of the turtle INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT GUÉDIGUIAN _____________________________________________________________________ Where did you get the idea for Ariane’s Thread? I wanted to make a film just for the pleasure of making it, in a completely free style, like a theatrical “impromptu” or improvisation - a little, fast-paced poetic piece, that would be exhilarating and pure fun. I also had a strong desire to let go, to simply perform for the sake of it. The screenplay needed to be a “performance vessel” for the actors, the technicians and of course, for myself. With the exception of Le Promeneur du Champ-de-Mars [The Last Mitterand], in which she wasn’t cast, you have written 16 films for Ariane Ascaride. -

From Paternal Hegemony to the Ethics of Fraternity:: the Place of Absent Fathers in Le Jeune Cinéma Français ByB Eun-Jee Park Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated) School of Modern Languages Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Newcastle University NE1 7RU United Kingdom February 2011 1 Abstract In the 1990s a new generation of socially engaged filmmakers came to be known as le jeune cinéma français. Many of these filmmakers examined a whole range of social issues, with a particular aim of focusing on the representation of the French family. In these family portraits, the father, both as the traditional head of the family institution and as a stand-in for the State, is notably missing. This thesis inquires into the paternal absence in le jeune cinéma, and traces how the paternal crisis is related to the filmmakers’ practice of auteur cinema. The jeunes auteurs, rather than participating directly in political debate, make a case for cinema as a tool for an ethical engagement with the reality of those left behind by socio-economic change. Drawing on philosophical thinking developed by Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida, this thesis discusses the ways le jeune cinéma seeks to move away from the oedipal association of the father with the law, and thereby to articulate the recognition of an ethical fraternity as opening up to the care and hospitality towards the Other. This thesis outlines specific ideals of new paternal models that le jeune cinéma proposes. Starting with an Introduction which develops the points made above and sets out the theoretical framework, this study then moves on to consider six emblematic films which alter the way the father is conceived through diverse paternal reconfigurations. -

Met o.a. Ariane Ascaride (LE CIEL ATTENDRA) en Jean-Pierre Darroussin (LE HAVRE). PRESENTS ARMY OF CRIME A film by Robert Guédiguian Official Selection, Cannes International Film Festival 2009, 139 minutes, 1.85, 35mm Publicity Contact: Julia Pacetti JMP Verdant Communications (917) 584-7846 / [email protected] Press Materials: http://www.lorberfilms.com/press A Lorber Films Release from Kino Lorber, Inc. 333 West 39th Street, Suite 502 New York, NY 10018 (212) 629-6880 SYNOPSIS A taut, revealing thriller about the early days of the French Resistance, a time when so many of the movement’s leaders and foot soldiers were often foreigners — Poles, Jews, Armenians, Spaniards, Italians — who had to fear French collaborators as well as the Germans. Armenian poet Missak Manouchian (a stand-out performance by Simon Abkarian) and his French wife Mélinée (Virginie Ledoyen) lead a ragtag assortment of volunteers against the German occupiers and their French allies. Varying in their actual homelands and in their reasons for joining the struggle, the one thing that unites them is the understanding that the Nazis oppression will only increase unless it is squarely confronted. To that end, they hatch a plot to assassinate a general, and show that resistance is indeed possible, but their activity attracts the attention of the German high command, which decides to teach the French population a different kind of lesson. France Displaying poetic realism, “35 shots of Rhum” is an enchanting film by Claire Denis, one of the most underestimated filmmakers in the US. Set among a small circle of friends and neighbors in a Parisian suburb, the tale centers around the relationship between a father and daughter and the arrival of a handsome young man. Sumptuously filmed, this delicate, understated film deals with the issue of the difficulties involved in letting go of family ties, even when they are dictated by the natural progress of time. The 400 Blows/ Les 400 coups (1959) François Truffaut. France A young Parisian boy, Antoine Doinel, neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child's eye. One of the main films of the nouvelle vague. The Adversary/ L' Adversaire (2002) Nicole Garcia. France Based on the 2000 book of the same name by Emmanuelle Carrère, this film is inspired by the real-life story of Jean Claude Romand who lived a lie for almost 20 years as he pursued an imaginary career as a doctor of medicine . -

35Th Portland International Film Festival 3
THE NORT HWEST FILM CENTER / PORTLAND ART M USE UM PRESENTS 3 5TH PORTLaNd INTERNaTIONaL FILM FESTIvaL SPONSOREd BY: THE OREGONIaN / R E GaL CINEMaS F E BRU aRY 9–25, 2012 WELCOME Welcome to the Northwest Film Center’s 35th annual showcase of new world cinema. Like our annual Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival, which celebrates the creativity and vision of artists in our community, the Portland International Film Festival (PIFF) seeks to explore the diversity of not only the art of film, but also the world around us. This year’s PIFF presents 93 feature and 46 short films from over three dozen countries, in an inspiring, eclectic snapshot of recent international cinema that we hope will stimulate your filmgoing well beyond the Festival itself. As part of the Film Center’s 40th Anniversary Season, we continue to look forward to the new more than celebrating the past, as we consider the role that film and the Film Center play in animating the regional cultural community. In that spirit, PIFF 35 is expanding its footprint, with theaters spread throughout the city and, we hope, with new audiences to match. In addition to our home base at the Whitsell Auditorium in the Portland Art Museum, PIFF screenings will come alive at Cinema 21, Cinemagic, Regal Lloyd Center Mall, Pioneer Place Cinemas, Newmark Theatre of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, World Trade Center, and Lake Twin Cinema in Lake Oswego. This year, we welcome a host of new sponsors, too. The Bank of Lake Oswego and City of Lake Oswego are enthusiastic partners in engaging new audiences there. -
