For five generations the Chiappas have come together to celebrate a traditional Italian Christmas, including recipes handed down across the years from when their relatives arrived in Merthyr Tydfil from Bardi in northern Italy. But with today’s hectic pace of life and with the family no longer living within a few streets of each other, maintaining these traditions has become increasingly difficult. So, for a fresh take on Christmas fare, Michela travels across Wales to meet other Welsh- Italian families to discover the special meals they prepare to celebrate together. Michela visits Welsh-Italian cooks in Bangor, Aberystwyth, Cardiff and Newport tasting dishes from a simple Pompeii pot roast to a decadent fish dish with sea bass and laverbread. Taking inspiration from all these recipes, Michela aims to put her own twist on them and create the ultimate Christmas feast. Sara Jones 2 THE GREATEST GIFT Tuesday, December 20 BBC One Wales, 10.40pm #BBCGreatestGift In The Greatest Gift Anwar from Newport has kidney failure. Ten-year-old Jade also has end-stage kidney failure. She travels from her home in Newport to the Children’s Kidney Centre in Cardiff three times a week for dialysis with her mum Mercedes. The treatment means that she regularly misses school. The only hope of curing Jade’s condition is a transplant. The family decide to look closer to home for a kidney match. Stuart, from Manorbier, has been admitted to the Critical Care Unit for brain surgery following a stroke. With no chance of recovery, his partner Angela is asked to share his end of life wishes. 17 years ago, Angela chose to donate her son’s organs following a tragic accident, she now faces the heartbreaking task of saying goodbye and deciding once more to donate her loved one’s organs to help others. Meanwhile, Anna-Louise from Cardiff, lost her husband Stuart, and son Fraser, 7, in a tragic car accident last year. Fraser’s organs were donated following the accident and she now campaigns, alongside daughter Elizabeth, to support organ donation through the charity she set up in their memory. Filmed over the course of a year, this emotional and thought-provoking series offers a unique insight into the world of organ donation and its impact on the lives of people in Wales. Siân Pitman 3 A WELSH-ITALIAN CHRISTMAS WITH MICHELA CHIAPPA Wednesday, December 21 BBC One Wales, 7.30pm #WelshItalians For five generations the Welsh-Italian Chiappa family have come together to celebrate Christmas in the same way, but this year Michela Chiappa has decided to do something different. After travelling from Bangor to Newport via Aberystwyth and Cardiff, Michela has a wealth of amazing ideas to create her very own Welsh-Italian Christmas meal. Taking inspiration from these recipes Michela prepares dishes that are both sure to impress guests and are easy to cook. To put her culinary creations to the test, Michela throws a Christmas Party for the Welsh- Italian community. But what will they think of the six-course menu she’s created based on the ideas they shared with her? And as any good chef knows it’s all about the preparation so Michela also shares hints and tips for smart shopping to save time ahead of the big day. Sara Jones 4 COMING HOME: IOAN GRUFFUDD Wednesday, December 21 BBC One Wales, 9pm #ComingHome Hollywood actor Ioan Gruffudd leaves his LA home and returns to Wales to learn about the mysterious stories and real-life dramas that lie deep in his Welsh roots. Learning of the sacrifices made by his relatives in both World Wars, Ioan is moved to tears when he hears the tragic fate of his uncle David Leslie Griffiths during the Normandy landings of World War Two. “These young men and women never had a chance,” he says. “Hearing these personal stories, even from a few generations ago, just goes to show we’ve all come from that and we’ve all benefitted from those sacrifices.” In another branch of the family, a mystery man and Ioan’s seven-times great-grandfather seems to have no birth record or death certificate, and “appears to have fallen from the sky”. Ioan is over the moon when, aided by genealogy expert Mike Churchill-Jones, he can finally lay to rest a centuries-old family puzzle. But when Ioan uncovers his undeniable family link to Kidwelly Castle and the prestigious ancestors who lived there, he learns the extraordinary and unexpected truth behind his royal lineage that takes his roots to the very heart of the House of Tudor and the king who conquered Wales. • “Amazing Grace” Starring Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, & Michael
“Amazing Grace” starring Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, & Michael Gambon, 2006, PG, 118 minutes Major Themes: Slavery Freedom Perseverance & Faith Justice & Reform Politics Interesting info: Tagline – Every song has its story. Every generation has its hero. William Wilberforce (1759 – 1833) was a very gifted statesman, a social reformer, a philanthropist and an evangelical Christian. As well as working to bring about the end of the slave trade, and then to abolish slavery itself, he was concerned about mistreatment of animals (he was a founder member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later to become the RSPCA), education, the social impact of heavy gin drinking, and the need for missionaries in various parts of the world, including India and Africa (he was a founder of the Church Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society). Amazing Grace is the most honored and recorded song of all time. Amazon.com lists some 2000 currently available recordings of Amazing Grace. Nothing else comes remotely close. It crosses all lines—from classical to country, from rock to traditional folk. It is permanently ingrained in the culture. No other song has enjoyed such diverse rendering. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for 26 years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act 1807, when Parliament passed a bill to abolish the slave trade. (The film’s release is a way of marking the bicentennial of that event.) Some years later, just three days before Wilberforce’s death, slavery itself was completely abolished in Britain. Part of his epitaph in Westminster Abbey reads: In the prosecution of these objects he relied, not in vain, on God.

  • Mari Thomas Jewellery: Fitting New Home for Welsh Jewellery Brand
Mari Thomas Jewellery: fitting new home for Welsh jewellery brand Celebrated Welsh jeweller Mari Thomas was looking to leave her rented business premises when she spotted a local hotel up for sale and realised that it could make the perfect workshop and gallery. By her own admission, Mari Thomas is always moving the goalposts. “My dream when starting out 20 years ago was to have a small workshop and a cabinet of my work in a gallery in Swansea,” she says, “and that happened after about a year. So you set yourself another goal and when you start getting nearer to that you develop bigger and bigger dreams.” A few years ago, Mari sat down and sketched out a five-year plan for her business – “real blue-sky thinking, almost what the impossible could be,” she says. When she took another look at it again recently, she was amazed by how many milestones she had passed. One of the biggest moments in Mari’s career (and there have been many, including pieces made for Sting, actor Ioan Gruffudd, the National Eisteddfod festival and the Welsh Rugby Union), came this summer when she bought her own premises in Llandeilo. Elation, pure panic and a pat on the back With the rent on her previous building rising and plans to buy a new property having fallen through, Mari found her eye drawn to the Old Castle Hotel in the centre of town. “It was bigger than the place I’d been looking at and seemed an enormous hill to climb,” says Mari, who went on to secure a mortgage on the property from NatWest, with help from business development manager Mark Dobson, who was referred by Mark Davis from Stevenage-based brokerage firm Omega Commercial Solutions.
