For five generations the Chiappas have come together to celebrate a traditional Italian Christmas, including recipes handed down across the years from when their relatives arrived in Merthyr Tydfil from Bardi in northern Italy. But with today’s hectic pace of life and with the family no longer living within a few streets of each other, maintaining these traditions has become increasingly difficult. So, for a fresh take on Christmas fare, Michela travels across Wales to meet other Welsh- Italian families to discover the special meals they prepare to celebrate together. Michela visits Welsh-Italian cooks in Bangor, Aberystwyth, Cardiff and Newport tasting dishes from a simple Pompeii pot roast to a decadent fish dish with sea bass and laverbread. Taking inspiration from all these recipes, Michela aims to put her own twist on them and create the ultimate Christmas feast. He’s back on the transplant list after his body rejected his first donor kidney. It’s a difficult time for him as he deals with the frustrations of dialysis and hospital admissions. Ten-year-old Jade also has end-stage kidney failure. She travels from her home in Newport to the Children’s Kidney Centre in Cardiff three times a week for dialysis with her mum Mercedes. The treatment means that she regularly misses school. The only hope of curing Jade’s condition is a transplant. The family decide to look closer to home for a kidney match. Stuart, from Manorbier, has been admitted to the Critical Care Unit for brain surgery following a stroke. With no chance of recovery, his partner Angela is asked to share his end of life wishes. 17 years ago, Angela chose to donate her son’s organs following a tragic accident, she now faces the heartbreaking task of saying goodbye and deciding once more to donate her loved one’s organs to help others. Meanwhile, Anna-Louise from Cardiff, lost her husband Stuart, and son Fraser, 7, in a tragic car accident last year. Fraser’s organs were donated following the accident and she now campaigns, alongside daughter Elizabeth, to support organ donation through the charity she set up in their memory. Filmed over the course of a year, this emotional and thought-provoking series offers a unique insight into the world of organ donation and its impact on the lives of people in Wales. After travelling from Bangor to Newport via Aberystwyth and Cardiff, Michela has a wealth of amazing ideas to create her very own Welsh-Italian Christmas meal. Taking inspiration from these recipes Michela prepares dishes that are both sure to impress guests and are easy to cook. To put her culinary creations to the test, Michela throws a Christmas Party for the Welsh- Italian community. But what will they think of the six-course menu she’s created based on the ideas they shared with her? And as any good chef knows it’s all about the preparation so Michela also shares hints and tips for smart shopping to save time ahead of the big day. Sara Jones 4 COMING HOME: IOAN GRUFFUDD Wednesday, December 21 BBC One Wales, 9pm #ComingHome Hollywood actor Ioan Gruffudd leaves his LA home and returns to Wales to learn about the mysterious stories and real-life dramas that lie deep in his Welsh roots. Learning of the sacrifices made by his relatives in both World Wars, Ioan is moved to tears when he hears the tragic fate of his uncle David Leslie Griffiths during the Normandy landings of World War Two. “These young men and women never had a chance,” he says. “Hearing these personal stories, even from a few generations ago, just goes to show we’ve all come from that and we’ve all benefitted from those sacrifices.” In another branch of the family, a mystery man and Ioan’s seven-times great-grandfather seems to have no birth record or death certificate, and “appears to have fallen from the sky”. Ioan is over the moon when, aided by genealogy expert Mike Churchill-Jones, he can finally lay to rest a centuries-old family puzzle. But when Ioan uncovers his undeniable family link to Kidwelly Castle and the prestigious ancestors who lived there, he learns the extraordinary and unexpected truth behind his royal lineage that takes his roots to the very heart of the House of Tudor and the king who conquered Wales. Sioned Gwyn 5 KATHERINE JENKINS: HOME FOR CHRISTMAS Thursday, December 22 BBC One Wales, 9pm #KJChristmas Katherine Jenkins is home for Christmas with a special concert at Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall, and also has a few surprises up her sleeve. The singer will be joined on stage by special guests Aled Jones, Bellavoce - an all-female peripatetic music teacher choir from Pembrokeshire, and the winners of the Songs of Praise Junior Choir of the Year, Llangennech Primary School. The concert promises a strong Welsh flavour, as well as many classic Christmas songs and tracks from her latest album. Katherine will also be surprising a few of her biggest fans, including a special appearance at a wedding, and Fran from Newport - whose daughter suffers from locked in syndrome - gets a makeover, a new dress and an invitation as Katherine’s guest to the Noah’s Ark Charity Dinner in Cardiff. Siân Pitman 6 JONATHAN MEETS… JOE CALZAGHE Friday, December 23 BBC One Wales, 8.30pm One of Wales’ favourite rugby legends and iconic Welsh rugby pundit, Jonathan Davies, meets three Welsh stars who’ve been at the top of their professional game. Joe Calzaghe is the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion in history. He retired in 2009 - undefeated. Jonathan visits Joe and his father Enzo at the Joe Calzaghe gym. The gym, based in Newbridge where there’s also a footbridge named after the boxing star, is filled with memorabilia from Joe’s fighting career, including his most treasured fight posters, gloves and championship belts. Joe reveals details of his hardest fight, losing his hunger for boxing, and how important it was for him to retain his undefeated status. Jonathan also has a go at swinging a few punches, but can he keep up with Newbridge’s greatest son? Also in the series Jonathan Meets…television personality Alex Jones and Welsh actor Matthew Rhys.
