Eighteen months later, as the nation is suffering what some analysts have described as an “economic 9/11,” the expected sale price for the Tropicana has plummeted to a paltry $200 million. Enter 73-year-old billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who bought the now-defunct Sands under similar circumstances in 2000 for an even paltrier $65 million and sold it in 2006 to Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. for $270 million. Industry sources have labeled Icahn as the favorite to snatch up the Trop at a discounted rate of almost 80% off. It appears that while Donald Trump may have authored “The Art of the Deal,” Icahn has mastered it… The recent indictment against former Atlantic City councilwoman Cassandra McCall-Clark is the first, but not likely the last, in what appears to be the culmination of an ever-expanding corruption probe that is sending shockwaves through City Hall. The probe, which originated from an investigation into the allocation of federal grant money through the Community Development Block Grant Program, also appears to be focusing on corruption within the city’s Special Improvement District dating back to 1999. Many former and current city officials, including Mayor Lorenzo Langford and City Council President William “Speedy” Marsh, have been subpoenaed to appear before a state Grand Jury in Trenton… The second annual “Hurley in the Morning” Golf Open will take place Friday, June 19, at the Mays Landing Golf and Country Club. Last year’s inaugural event allowed Harry Hurley to distribute $20,000 to three area charities. This year, Hurley expects to double that figure, Award Winning Seafood with the proceeds going to The G. Larry James Legacy Fund, The John R. Elliot HERO Campaign, The F.A.C.E.S. Autism Support Network of Atlantic County and the Dean Randazzo Cancer Fund. The honorary tournament chairperson is Congressman Frank LoBiondo and the tournament is being presented by Marty and Sheila O’Boyle, of Longport. For more information on how to participate or contribute, please visit www.HarryHurley.com… Longtime Press of Atlantic City executive editor Paul Merkoski will officially retire from the newspaper business June 26 to spend more time with his family, his grandchildren in particular.
