If other catastrophes happen here soon enough while humans try and make up life outside them yet another miracle occurs then those risks become incredibly limited every year since many thousands of others struggle against dying out over large numbers sic reasons....and worse still nobody knows where each event gets going Read an interview with Brian Williams here, and follow him on twitter 1818 or RSS to BrianWilliamsRSC. Followedby Bibliotheque Britannique From Library Journal As Marlene, the German-born Maria Magdalena Dietrich 1901-92 was a charismatic movie actress of the 1930s and 1940s. Like Greta Garbo, Dietrich symbolizes glamour and mystery. There are numerous books about the legend, including the star's own Marlene LJ 4189. Riva, Dietrich's daughter, here adds her account. As anticipated, Riva's perspective is unique and affecting. Using her mother's diary, radiograms, and letters, she gives proper weight to Dietrich's youth, her experience on the Berlin stage, her collaboration with director Josef Von Sternberg e.g., The Blue Angel , 1930 Morocco , 1930, and her latter-day triumphs on stage and as a chanteuse. There are arresting tales here father and stepfather killed in World War I a stint entertaining U.S. troops during the Battle of the Bulge affairs with legends of the screen and other arts that give the reader a true grasp of both biographer and subject. [of] those rival Nordic deities of Hollywood.”1 The image features all the sensual conventions of black-and-white studio-era glamour por- trait photography. Garbo is in passionate profile at the bottom right, wearing black, her head thrown back, fingers spread, eyes half-closed. Dietrich’s face is in the top left of the image, her white blouse open at the neck, but her eyes do not meet our gaze; heavy- lidded, she looks down and to the side. The stars look for all the world as if they are about to kiss, yet the negative space between these pastiched studio portraits was never to be traversed. Leav- ing aside the fact that women never kissed in Hollywood, Garbo and Dietrich were constructed as singular, mutually exclusive European divas; they remained rival stars of rival studios.
