Quickly becoming one of today's most sought-after violists, ROBERTO DIAZ enjoys a successful career in solo, , teaching, and orchestral performance. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, and prize winner in several competitions including the Naumburg, Munich, and Washington International Competition. He has performed in the United States, Europe, and Central and South America in recital and as soloist with such as the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Germany), the National , the Boston l Pops, and the Savannah Symphony, to name a few. Recital engage­ t ments have taken him to several important venues in Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, D. C., Chicago, Baltimore, Atlanta, and Moscow, where he was re-engaged immediately to perform in the city's Great Hall. He has also toured extensively in his native Chile as soloist and recitalist. As a chamber musician, Mr. Diaz has collaborated with many of today's leading artists such as Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, , Yefim Bronfman, and Samuel Sanders at festivals including Mostly Mozart, Tanglewood, El Paso, Newport, Cape and Islands, and Marlboro. As a member of the Diaz Trio, along with violinist David ,._ Kim and cellist Andreas Diaz, he has performed throughout the United States, Mexico, and Chile. In addition to participating in festivals in the United States and Europe, the Diaz Trio was one oftwo ensembles invited by Isaac Stern to participate in a special concert celebrating the next one-hundred years ofmusic-making at Carnegie Hall. Elsewhere, Mr. Diaz has performed with, among others, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Lydian . Last year, Mr. Diaz was invited to perform the annual William Primrose Memorial Recital in Provo, Utah. In addition, he also per­ formed in recital and as soloist at the 1989 International Viola Con­ gress in California. During December of 1990, Diaz and two col­ leagues from the National Symphony travelled to Bahrain to perform for U.S. service personnel stationed in the Persian Gulf Mr. Diaz began his musical studies at the Chilean Conservatory and continued at the Georgia Acade~y ofMl:lsic, where he studied both and viola with his father, Manuel Diaz. He later studied 1!f I I j I {. l j with Burton Fine at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and J Joseph de Pasquale at the Curtis Institute ofMusic in Philadelphia. _: I Mr. Diaz also holds a degree in industrial design from DeKalb Techni­ cal School in Atlanta. In addition to teaching master classes at many ofthis country's • leading music schools, Mr. Diaz serves on the viola faculty at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and the University ofMa1yland in College Park. Until recently, Mr. Diaz was the Principal Violist of the ..• National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D. C.
