THE DEVELOPMENT OF GERMANY 1919-1991 KEY QUESTION 2 : The rise to power of the Nazi Party 1929-1934 The rise to power of the Nazi Party 1929-1934 BACKGROUND : The impact of the Depression on Germany In October 1929 the Wall Street Stock Exchange in America crashed and plunged the world into a serious economic crisis. Share values in the USA had increased well beyond the actual value of the products they were invested in and, when the bubble burst, American investors lost $400 million in a month. Countries like Germany, whose industries relied heavily on loans from America, suffered greatly as the loans which had helped to boost the economy in the 1920s in Germany now dried up. In addition, as the world’s economy went into depression, Germany’s exports also began to decline, resulting in serious unemployment. The failure of several Austrian and German banks in 1931 made an already bad situation worse. Prices of farm products tumbled and German agriculture suffered, causing distress to farmers who had heavily mortgaged their farms in the 1920s. The impact of the Depression on Germany was very severe, causing serious social discontent: • Unemployment rose dramatically from 900,000 in 1929, to over 3.5 million in 1930, 5 million in 1931 and nearly 6 million in 1932. This caused widespread misery and poverty. • The failure of the banks caused the middle classes to lose their savings once again. • Many people found they could not keep up with mortgage or rent payments and became homeless.

Approximately 25 new- series of data have been added, and the same number dropped for lack of current statistics. All the new series added since the publication of the 1932 Annual Supplement to the SURVEY are indicated by an asterisk (*). Back figures and explanatory data for these series are not printed in the Annual Supplement. If they have been published in monthly issues, references are given in the footnotes. A record of the series added and dropped since the publication of the 1932 Supplement appears on page 56 of this issue. This list will be carried also in subsequent issues, to provide a source of ready reference. No 1933 Annual Supplement As previously announced, reduced printing funds make it impossible to publish a 1933 Annual Supplement. It is important, therefore, that the tables printed monthly in the SURVEY giving back data for certain new and revised series, be retained for reference purposes. Copies of the 1932 ANNUAL SUPPLEMENT are still furnished to new subscribers to the SURVEY, so that they may obtain the maximum benefit from the service. This supplement, and the March 1933 issue, which contains practically all the 1932 data, will afford a complete record through December 1932, except in the case of new series, where reference to the individual monthly numbers in which the back data occurred will be necessary. New subscribers may obtain the March issue as long as copies are available by sending 10 cents extra with their subscriptions.
