Bristol Harbour Authority administers the licensing of approx 400 small craft berths within the Bristol City Docks. The facilities provided range from fully serviced marina type pontoon berths for vessels up to 9.5 metres and linear quay wall berths for larger vessels. Due to the high quay walls, there are a very limited number of berths available for narrow boats and other low freeboard vessels over 9.5 metres in length. However, there is a development programme, to provide more pontoon and low-level quay wall berthing for this type of vessel in the future.

The central location, reasonable level of charges and the excellent toilet, shower and utility services provided, make Bristol a very popular place for the Leisure Boater to visit and keep their boat. Berths do occasionally become available. Third Party Liability Insurance cover to the sum of £3,000,000 and a recent photograph of your vessel must accompany the application. In addition you are required to provide within 30 days of being offered a berth, evidence that your vessel meets the Boat Safety Scheme standards.

As a visitor you may take out a short-term licence for 1, 2, 7 or 15 days up to a maximum of 30 days (at the discretion of the Harbour Master). There are approx 30 visitors berths located in the central part of the harbour. Some of these berths are made available to cruising live aboard boaters for winter lay-up between 1st October and 31st March the following year. Demand is very high for these berths so early application is essential.

The Bristol City Council is developing a number of residential berths in locations agreed by the Planning Authority. These berths are currently fully allocated and rarely become available. No other residential use of vessels is permitted. However, the Harbour Office will accept an application to be placed on a waiting list for a residential berth.
