ANNUAL REPORT 2006-2007 From the Chair of the Advisory Board of Regents Mrs. Kathy Lavezzo Dear Friends of Serra, I am honored to be this year’s Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Regents! In September 2005, the Archdiocese of San Francisco approved bylaws establishing the Board. The board’s purpose is to assist the Principal and, ultimately, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools by providing advice, counsel and assistance in the following areas: • Strategic Planning • Finance • Development • Buildings and Grounds • Academic Program Strategic Planning Committee: Mike Murphy, Chair 4 Assists in formulating strategic goals for the long-term direction of the school. Buildings and Grounds Committee: Ray Petrin ‘69, Chair Provides advice and assistance regarding the appearance, maintenance and long-term capital improvement of the existing facility. Academic Program Committee: Kevin Dunleavy ‘80, Chair Provides advice and assistance regarding the school’s academic program. Junípero Serra High School is truly blessed by the caliber and commitment of our board members who represent alumni, alumni parents and leaders from business education, government and ministry. The board, working with Serra’s Administrators, plays an integral part in furthering our mission of building young men of faith, wisdom and service. I want to personally thank all the members of the Advisory Board of Regents who have already offered so generously of their time and talents. I look forward to a successful year and thus ensuring Serra continues to stand tall as the premier Catholic educational institution serving the young men of San Mateo County! Sincerely, Kathy Lavezzo, Chair Advisory Board of Regents ANNUAL REPORT 2006-2007 Principal’s Letter Dear Alumni and Friends of Serra: School year 2006-2007 was one for the ages, as evidenced by the following: • The amount of students applying to each freshmen class continues to rise at record levels! For the fourth year in a row, Serra High School is at full enrollment with 1,000 students. • Our theatre arts program performed to full houses in “The Miracle Worker” and “Bye Bye Birdie.” • Our Men’s Chorus earned their second consecutive “Unanimous Superior Rating” at the CMEA Chorus Festival. Our Tri-school Symphonic Band earned a “Superior” rating at the CMEA Band Festival • Our seniors earned $3 million in scholarships, being accepted to all of the UC and CSU campuses, the major Catholic Universities nationwide, the Ivy League, and the United States Naval Academy. • More Serra students are taking Advanced Placement courses than ever before, with scores at the highest levels in the school’s history -- well above the national average. 5 • Varsity league championships in football, wrestling, golf and baseball. As we begin 2007-2008, we are very excited about the new ventures: • We welcome to Serra our new Campus Minister, Kyle Lierk. Kyle comes to us by way of Creighton University in Omaha and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. He and his staff are already making their mark enhancing programs that support our students’ spiritual development. • The arrival of an outstanding cohort of new teachers in Social Studies, English, Spanish, Art, and Science -- more about them in the next edition of TRADITIONS. • We have a brand new all-weather football/soccer field that will properly drain water during winter storms! • The Board of Regents are hard at work on a number of strategic initiatives, one of which is an information night on affordable housing in the Bay Area for K-12 teachers and staff throughout the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Finally, I want to thank each of you -- especially those listed in the 2006-2007 Annual Report for your generous support of Serra. Last year we raised $1.8 million in annual fundraising, launched a strategic campaign to enhance our endowment through planned gifts, and began finalizing our designs for Phase II of our Master Plan. I especially want to thank our alumni for their ever-increasing support of our financial aid program — you men are true Padres! On behalf of our students, thank you for your support. With your help, Serra has become the “destination school” on the San Francisco Peninsula. Your continued support will make it possible for future Padres to attend this great school! Sincerely, Lars Lund Principal JUNIPERO SERRA HIGH SCHOOL In September 2005 the Archdiocese of San Francisco approved bylaws that established Serra’s Advisory Board of Regents. Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources.
