its route and entertained hundreds of thousands of people and they did it all on their terms. There was never any doubt that they would. Ignoring the shameful and vicious attacks that turned out to be less effective than a flea to a lion, the council methodically organized and brought in over a 150 marching units. Colorful floats, drum and bugle bands, military squads with accompanying color guards; flags proudly flying in the breeze and all the kid friendly movie and TV characters they could muster; and there were plenty, they flooded the parade route with a magnificent sea of red, white and blue and of course green. The horses, the fire engines, the trick cars and musket firing Colonial militiamen and so much made this day a hit for everyone. These incredible dedicated veterans volunteer their time months in advance to make sure this parade is one of the finest in the land. They put in long hours; sometimes working day and night going to meetings, lining up participants from other cities and states, raising funds and attending to each and every detail to make sure everything is perfect. In addition to the parade, they work hard to make sure the memorial exercises are set up properly and with military precision and pull it all off with perfection. The Allied Council, working with the South Boston Citizens’ Association, makes sure that the two weeks leading up to the big St. Patrick’s Day/Evacuation Day finale has more than enough activities to appeal to everyone of every age. South Boston is fortunate indeed to have people like Wacko Hurley, Phil Wuschke, (SBT’s own) Brian Mahoney and all the other great members of the South Boston Allied War Veteran’s Council who have for so many years, dedicated themselves to this neighborhood. The South Boston Parade of 2014 was another success thanks to these hard working, courageous and unflappable veterans on the ‘Council’. Each one of them deserves very special praise. We salute them all and from the bottom of our hearts, we say Thank you! *Every week, we will run part of an interview from “The Danny Picard Show” which can be heard weekends on WEEI-93.7 FM. This week, Danny talked Patriots with Comcast SportsNet’s Mike Giardi:

DANNY PICARD: What was your the wide receiver position. They a desire to bring that guy. Look, I don’t of Saturday], where do we stand with reaction to Julian Edelman coming hope Amendola is healthy, but Julian know how many more years Steve the Wilfork situation, and what do you back to the Patriots? And when he Edelman is in a pretty good spot. Smith has left in him, but I think you think could happen next? did go out and test the free-agent DP: This doesn’t mean Amendola saw last year, in that game in Carolina, MG: My understanding was that he market for a few days, did you ever will now get cut, right? Because the what he did to Aqib Talib, not only put in his request [to be released] think it was realistic that he wouldn’t options to cut him doesn’t make any getting over the top of him and having long ago, and that he made it clear return to new England, or that it sense to me, based on the money you a pretty good day, but also getting to them that he wasn’t willing -- was a possibility that he’d end up still would owe him if you cut him. into his head. His mouth doesn’t stop based on the figures that the Patriots somewhere else? Of course, he is You might as well keep him around. running. I don’t know if that would were kicking around -- to go in returning, so, how did you see all this This isn’t the next show to drop. necessarily play as well here as it did that direction and restructure. The play out? MG: That would be completely there, in terms of whether the Patriots interesting thing here, Danny, is, MIKE GIARDI: I thought that, foolish [to cut him]. They had him coaching staff would accept that. it’s hardcore, but as I kind of ponder based on the way it broke down on the calendar, if they wanted to do But there’s a competitiveness about this situation, the Patriots don’t owe with deadline they gave him and the something before free agency started. him that I think Bill and everybody him any favors here. They don’t original offer that was below what he They could have done something, and else certainly admires. That guy, he have to release him right now. They thought was fair, that if he could drum still would have essentially paid him doesn’t give an inch, and he’ll take can hang onto him. If they want to up any kind of offer that was $2 or $3 as much to go away as they would whatever he can get. So, from that let some more money get spent and million more than what the Patriots have to have him on the roster. I just aspect, he would have been a perfect maybe get some teams where they put on the table for him, then he don’t see why anybody would have Patriot, in the sense that, I don’t think don’t want him to go, maybe force would have been out the door as fast that thought in their head. I think he you’re going to find too many guys as those teams to say, “I don’t know if as possible. But I think what we’ve plays out this year and then they go competitive as Steve Smith. they’re going to let Vince go.” And seen [last] week, is the wide receiver from there. Whether he’s healthy or DP: A name I’ve been throwing out then maybe those teams will have to market is much like the cornerback not, or whether he proves himself as there for a long time, and as we try to go out and spend money elsewhere market was a year ago. A lot of pretty a trusted guy for Brady, those are all sit here and put ourselves in the Bill and take away that spot that Vince good players, or guys that maybe things that he’s got to take care of this Belichick hoodie and make the moves maybe would command on their have some question marks but have year. But, I never really bought into that we think could be next, do you roster. I think it’s very interesting the potential to be really good players, the theory that he’d be gone. think it could be possible to maybe to see how that plays out, because ended up signing one-year deals, or DP: I was loving the news that Steve convince Tony Gonzalez to not go obviously, you figure with all he’s below-market deals, and would test Smith could have been coming to work on TV as an analyst this year? done for the franchise, you figure the market again. When Julian got the Patriots. This was heart-breaking MG: I know that that has been they might just say, “Fine.” But the out [to the market], the money wasn’t stuff to me that he’s signed with the something that came up back at the fact that nothing has happened [as there. And then it became a question Baltimore Ravens after being cut by trade deadline, when Atlanta was of Saturday], it makes me wonder if of, “Do I wait around a few more the Carolina Panthers. I would have out of the mix. He insists that he’s they’re going to hang onto him for a days and maybe risk the fact that the loved to see Steve Smith in a Patriots not playing. He took the job in TV. I little bit, make him twist in the wind, Patriots might get LaFell or maybe uniform. It just goes to show you know he’s getting paid a good chunk and again, eliminate other options in get involved with Sanders and maybe that the Pats were very interested in of change to go into TV. It just would places that maybe they don’t want price me out of it completely? Or do I bringing him here though. I mean, seem to me that he’s removed himself him to go to. I am guessing that the not wait on anybody else, go back to how many guys does Bill Belichick from the equation. Unless I hear any Wilfork camp already knows what’s the table with the Patriots, see if they have personal phone conversations rumblings otherwise, I’m ruling him out there. Much like that I think the can come up a little bit.” And when with while that player is in an opposing out. I don’t think that there’s any Patriots sort of had an idea of what they did, he’s got a deal. And look, airport? Obviously the Patriots were chance that Tony Gonzalez is here. it would take to get a deal done with I’m sure there’s some disappointment genuinely interested and they really DP: When we look at other potential Darrelle Revis, and that that was a from him, that he didn’t get the cash wanted Steve Smith before he signed moves this offseason and we look at legitimate opportunity that would he wanted. I don’t think at Vince Wilfork’s contract situation. Vince has a good idea of what [his him, and I think we saw last year how there’s any question that they’re not The Patriots asked him to restructure market value] would be. do with the extension and how they Patriots’ secondary after Talib signed want to move that money around. with the Broncos? But I’m guessing what they’re asking MG: Obviously my first reaction to him to do, not just for this year, but Talib’s deal was, I think like everybody in years two or three, is essentially else, it was, “Holy crap.” And then below market, or at least, below it was shortly thereafter that a little market for what he feels he deserves. birdie texted me that essentially, “[The Look, Vince is one of those guys that Patriots] had talked about Revis, and had to sign that six-year rookie deal. there was legitimate interest there, so I think the base was $9 million. There don’t be surprised if we go down that were incentives that could have got road.” And sure enough, it played out him to $18. I don’t think he ever got that way. You were sweating a little to $18. So, they made him play that bit there, but I think that they knew whole thing out. And then they made that Revis was going to end up being him sit and wait. Before he got his out there. I think they knew what it big deal, there were all talks about was going to cost to sign him. And holdouts and things of that nature. I think they had a good idea that he They made him sweat and he didn’t wanted to come here. So, I think that like it. He should be happy that he got that, from their standpoint, made it a pretty much most of this deal, about little easier to deal with. And I know 80 percent of this deal. He’s got $32 that people say they made a legit offer million of the $40 that he’s made. But to Talib, we’re hearing four years, $40 money is a big deal to him. It’s always million. But, no one has shown me been a big deal to him. It’s not a big the numbers. And all I can say is that deal for everybody, but he fought for when Talib did his press conference in his money, and I don’t think that he Denver, he made a point of saying a feels he needs to do them any favors. couple times that he really felt wanted Because I think he feels like, for the in Denver. And “wanted” is equal to first six years of his career, he was dollars in my book. I’m wondering doing them a favor and they never if the Patriots’ offer at 4/40 was came to him and said, “Let’s rip this structured in such a manner that the up and start a new.” They made him money wouldn’t be realized, or there play it out. He fought for his money. was a lot of backloaded money that He got it. And now he’s not willing might not get to him. This deal that to give it up. So he has a feeling that he signed in Denver was essentially there’s money out there for him, and a three-year, $27 million deal. And he wants out. they also have the potential to walk DP: Brandon Browner. Before then, away from him for one year, and only Darrelle Revis. Do you think back have $4 million of dead money, if of the night that Talib signed with it’s a complete disaster.
