BURMEISTER, EDITOR ON THE COVER THREE Newly Renovated Organic Laboratories! # 3 8 - P AGE I BLU E H E N C H E MIST ON THE COVER One of the three newly-renovated Organic Chemistry teaching laboratories (QDH 302) is shown. Work on the labs (QDH 112, 318, 320) started on May, 2013 and was completed in February of this year. The refurbishment of the labs was a crucial step in the ongoing revision of the Organic Chemistry laboratory curricula. The additional fume hoods allow each student to conduct experiments individually while minimizing their exposure to chemical reagents. The transparent glass construction helps teaching assistants observe students while they work. The hoods are equipped with inert-gas lines, which can allow the students to work with air-sensitive compounds and learn advanced laboratory techniques. The hoods are also equipped with vacuum lines, which obviate the need for water aspirators and dramatically reduce the labs' water usage. The lab design also allows for instrumentation modules to be swapped in and out according to the needs of the experiment. Carts are designed to house instruments such as gas chromatographs and infrared spectrometers as well as any necessary computer equipment. These carts can then be wheeled into docking areas that have been fitted with the necessary inert gas and electrical lines. The design expands the range of possible instrumentation the students can use while occupying a small footprint of lab space. The labs also feature large flat screen monitors, wireless internet, and computer connectivitiy that will enable the use of multimedia demonstrations and tablet computing. -

They are housed in the cochlea and convey sound information to the brain via synapses with the auditory nerve. IHCs have been thought to be electrically and metabolically independent from each other. We report that, upon developmental maturation, in mice 30% of the IHCs are electrochemically coupled in ‘mini-syncytia’. This coupling permits transfer of fluorescently-labeled metabolites and macromolecular tracers. The membrane capacitance, Ca2+-current, and resting current increase with the number of dye-coupled IHCs. Dual voltage-clamp experiments substantiate low resistance electrical coupling. Pharmacology and tracer permeability rule out coupling by gap junctions and purinoceptors. 3D electron microscopy indicates instead that IHCs are coupled by membrane fusion sites. Consequently, depolarization of one IHC triggers pre- synaptic Ca2+-influx at active zones in the entire mini-syncytium. Helping diabetes sufferers Thanks to work carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford, patients with a particular genetic form of diabetes can now be treated with an oral tablet rather than an insulin injection, which dramatically improves their blood glucose control and quality of life. www.ox.ac.uk/oxfordimpacts In the past, people with neonatal diabetes faced a life of insulin injections. However, the discovery that their diabetes is due to activating mutations in the potassium channel has enabled them to switch to sulphonylurea tablet therapy. This has not only enhanced their blood sugar control and lowered their risk of developing the secondary complications of diabetes; it has also improved their quality of life and that of their families. In a few rare cases, patients with specific genetic defects not only have diabetes, they also show developmental delay, and start to walk and talk much later than expected for their age. Treatment with sulphonylurea tablets can often help these problems too.
