E-Footy RECORD 31st May 2008 Issue 9 Editorial with Marty King AFL AND AFLPA SET TO MOVE ON NEW ALCOHOL POLICY It’s terrifi c to see the AFL and the AFL Players Association working collaboratively to formulate a new policy on responsible alcohol consumption in the football environment. They are seeking feedback from each of the 16 AFL clubs, together with key national drug and alcohol experts, before framing a policy with guidelines that all AFL clubs and associated bod- ies like AFL Queensland can use to develop their own. This comes after a lot of background work was done over almost two years and the AFL Com- mission received a full briefi ng. The AFL, the Players’ Association and the AFL clubs understand that quite clearly that they have a responsibility to promote responsible drinking within the AFL and among the 16 clubs, the players and staff. But it’s not just about the elite level. The same will apply at the grassroots level and we at AFLQ will look to partner with the League on this important initiative. The guidelines within the AFL Framing Policy will provide a framework for AFL clubs and asso- ciated bodies to assist them in developing their own individual club responsible alcohol policies. The AFL Framing Policy lists a set of objectives for players and club staff, including the devel- opment of approaches for responsible consumption, effective pathways for treatment of alco- hol-related problems, creating responsible drinking cultures and using player welfare oriented and education-based approaches to promote responsible alcohol consumption. -

Tasmanian Legislative Council Select Committee Inquiry into AFL in Tasmania Submission from Russell Hanson 18 th June 2019 Because of the history of Tasmanian football, in particular, from the creation of the AFL in 1990, there needs to be an understanding of just what has happened since then; what the AFL has done, or more correctly have not done. My submission therefore will examine the history and recent events with an aim to provide context for the Select Committee. It will also look at current problems and solutions and will examine the future with budgets, economic returns and the way forward. This may not follow precisely the Terms of Reference, but it will incorporate the 7 items throughout. She lectures in human resource management, organisational behaviour and human resource development. She is currently undertaking a PhD examining performance management of academics in Australian universities. CAREER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT IN ELITE SPORT: AN AFL PERSPECTIVE ABSTRACT This paper examines career development in elite sport, specifically the perceptions of Australian Football League (AFL) players on the career development programs offered by the AFL Players Association. HRM literature reveals considerable research in the area of career planning and development. There is however a paucity of research into career planning for elite athletes in Australia. While overseas studies indicate a lack of career planning by elite athletes for their life after sport, that is not the findings of this research. This pilot study reveals that AFL Players not only recognise the need for and value of career planning, they actively utilise the AFL Players Association, Player Development program, in particular the training and development and guidance aspects of the program . This research is useful because it provides feedback to those who formulate such programs to better cater for and create more focused programs. It also provides the basis for further research across the sport and the potential to test its applicability across other elite sports. -

Today, the AFL players are paid more than ever and are used as marketing tools to promote and sell the game, often to new fans in new markets of Australia – namely New South Wales and Queensland - who haven’t traditionally played Australian Football, preferring the rugby codes instead. But perhaps the biggest change in the AFL is that the play element is now used as function of business. Put simply, winning leads to more money. As such, the play element is now manipulated more than ever. The game has more coaches implementing more tactics, strategies, game plans and set plays than ever before. These changes can be linked back to the media’s influence on the game. This paper utilises the combined observations and theories of Johan Huizinga and Pierre Bourdieu to create a theoretical lens through which we can understand the media’s growing influence in sport and its impact on play’s transformation. The theory will then be expounded through an extensive analysis of the media’s influence in the AFL, particularly its play element. This analysis will be supported with insights and views from AFL fans, members, commentators and theorists. -

Coincidentally, I joined AFL Tasmania as a Director at virtually the same time Andrew became Chief Executive and during my seven years as Chairman of AFL Tasmania our team has worked very closely with Andrew, Gillon McLachlan and other members of the AFL executive management team. The facts speak for themselves; Andrew Demetriou has been an outstanding national leader of our game and in my opinion he has also provided exceptional support and advice to Tasmanian football through AFL Tasmania. The first time I met with Andrew he was very clear about the fact that the AFL must prioritise its development activities in Queensland and New South Wales. The growth of the game in these two northern states will ultimately be to the benefit of a traditional football state such as Tasmania.
