Rosen1 Who's Your Daddy: Father Trumps Fate in Supernatural From the pilot episode, Supernatural has clearly been rooted in family, specifically in a male-only family. The brief glimpse viewers have of the Winchester household together is quickly replaced by a family ravaged by the death of a beloved mother and wife. Following Mary’s death, the family becomes less like kin and more like an elite fighting squad with John as the stern general. John’s shift from loving, nurturing father to disciplinarian will have far- reaching effects on Dean and Sam and the men that they will ultimately become, yet their experiences with John as father are vastly different.

  • ABSTRACT the Women of Supernatural: More Than
ABSTRACT The Women of Supernatural: More than Stereotypes Miranda B. Leddy, M.A. Mentor: Mia Moody-Ramirez, Ph.D. This critical discourse analysis of the American horror television show, Supernatural, uses a gender perspective to assess the stereotypes and female characters in the popular series. As part of this study 34 episodes of Supernatural and 19 female characters were analyzed. Findings indicate that while the target audience for Supernatural is women, the show tends to portray them in traditional, feminine, and horror genre stereotypes. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: 1) to provide a description of the types of female characters prevalent in the early seasons of Supernatural including mother-figures, victims, and monsters, and 2) to describe the changes that take place in the later seasons when the female characters no longer fit into feminine or horror stereotypes. Findings indicate that female characters of Supernatural have evolved throughout the seasons of the show and are more than just background characters in need of rescue. These findings are important because they illustrate that representations of women in television are not always based on stereotypes, and that the horror genre is evolving and beginning to depict strong female characters that are brave, intellectual leaders instead of victims being rescued by men. The female audience will be exposed to a more accurate portrayal of women to which they can relate and be inspired. Copyright © 2014 by Miranda B. Leddy All rights reserved TABLE OF CONTENTS Tables

  • From Shadow Citizens to Teflon Stars
From shadow citizens to teflon stars cultural responses to the digital actor L i s a B o d e A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2004 School of Theatre, Film and Dance University of New South Wales Abstract This thesis examines an intermittent uncanniness that emerges in cultural responses to new image technologies, most recently in some impressions of the digital actor. The history of image technologies is punctuated by moments of fleeting strangeness: from Maxim Gorky’s reading of the cinematographic image in terms of “cursed grey shadows,” to recent renderings of the computer-generated cast of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within as silicon-skinned mannequins. It is not merely the image’s unfamiliar and new aesthetics that render it uncanny. Rather, the image is received within a cultural framework where its perceived strangeness speaks allegorically of what it means to be human at that historical moment. In various ways Walter Benjamin, Anson Rabinbach and N. Katherine Hayles have claimed that the notion and the experience of “being human” is continuously transformed through processes related to different stages of modernity including rational thought, industrialisation, urbanisation, media and technology. In elaborating this argument, each of the four chapters is organized around the elucidation of a particular motif: “dummy,” “siren,” “doppelgänger” and “resurrection.” These motifs circulate through discourses on different categories of digital actor, from those conceived without physical referents to those that are created as digital likenesses of living or dead celebrities. These cultural responses suggest that even while writers on the digital actor are speculating about the future, they are engaging with ideas about life, death and identity that are very old and very ambivalent.

  • Wayward Sons: Modern Mythology in Supernatural
Siggard 1 Alison Siggard BYU English Symposium 20 March 2014 Wayward Sons: Modern Mythology in Supernatural “The core notion behind Supernatural was to make a series about urban legends. I think they’re this incredibly rich mythology about the United States,” show creator Eric Kripke said in an interview promoting the show’s two hundredth episode (“Supernatural” at 200”). Since 2005, the cult television show has grown to be something of an underground phenomenon, with legions of dedicated fans. The story of two brothers travelling the country in search of monsters, demons, and ghosts has taken viewers on a ten season long journey of emotional upheavals, social commentary, and dramatic storytelling. As explained by Kripke, the show is set in a world of mythology and urban legends. However, the use of and modification of these motifs leads to something different about Supernatural : it becomes a legend of its own, telling the tale of the Winchester brothers as heroes. Through its use of mythological and folkloric motifs and retellings, Supernatural creates its own mythology, reflecting old archetypes into an epic for a modern age. “Dad wants us to pick up where he left off”: Character Archetypes in Two Heroes’ Journeys Contrary to most heroic stories, the show focuses on two heroes, Sam and Dean Winchester. However, they are two very different types of heroes. Their stories start the same. Twenty-two years before the events of the show begin, the brothers’ mother, Mary, was killed in a mysterious fire in Sam’s nursery. Her death causes John Winchester, the boys’ father, to embark on a journey to discover what killed his wife and to get revenge.

  • Metafictional Strategies in Supernatural Alberto N
Breaking the Mirror Metafictional Strategies in Supernatural Alberto N. Garcia Like those guys, from the book. What are they called? Uh . Supernatural! Two guys use fake IDs with rock aliases, hunt down ghosts, demons, and vampires. What are their names? Uh . “The Monster at the End of This Book” (4.18) When the seller of the “Golden Comic” bookshop describes the protagonists of the novels written by Carver Edlund, viewers share the surprise of Sam and Dean, the protagonists of Supernatural, the tv show. With the characters’ realization that their own lives are being reflected in the books, the illusionist mirror created by this fantasy series of horror and adventure is shattered. Illusionism, argues Robert Stam, “pretends to be something more than mere artistic production; it presents its characters as real people, its sequence of words or images as real time, and its representations as substantiated fact” (1). But what happens in the “The Monster at the End of This Book” is not an isolated occurrence. Because one of the 146 breaking the mirror most unique narrative strategies of Supernatural is the way it creates a break with the mirror that characterizes traditional fiction and turns it in upon itself, underscoring its own fictitiousness. This rupture occurs, in varying degrees, throughout the entire series and proves essential in the Winchesters’ battle against the army of darkness. Patricia Waugh defines metafiction as “a term given to fictional writing which self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in order to pose questions about the relation- ship between fiction and reality” (2).

  • Specters of Modernity: “Supernatural Japan” and the Cosmopolitan Gothic
Specters of Modernity: “Supernatural Japan” and the Cosmopolitan Gothic By Michael Joseph Blouin A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2012 ABSTRACT SPECTERS OF MODERNITY: “SUPERNATURAL JAPAN” AND THE COSMOPOLITAN GOTHIC By Michael Joseph Blouin Value of Research Specialization: From the mid-19th century until today, “Japan” has frequently been imagined in Western discourse as a supernatural entity; at the same time, Gothic tales from each nation have been exchanged, consumed, and adapted. By better understanding this phenomenon, in works ranging from the prose of Lafcadio Hearn and Winnifred Eaton to the films of Shimizu Takashi, one can better understand the cultural relationship between the two countries as well as the layers of complexity that accompany constructions of “foreignness.” Argument of Dissertation: Cosmopolitanism, following Kant, is often articulated through concepts of unity and rationality. I argue that the cultural exchange between the United States and Japan in the last century suggests a different kind of cosmopolitanism, one that instead uses Gothic tropes to interrogate the Self as it projects its own hidden “foreignness” onto distant lands. This argument builds upon theories of Julia Kristeva, Paul Ricouer, and Jean Baudrillard that argue for “radical alterity.” In the macabre and spectral visions of one another, the United States and Japan glimpse the excesses within their modernization. Contribution of Dissertation: My dissertation expands and changes out current understanding of the U.S.-Japan cultural relationship, specifically in literature and film. It attempts to challenge a dominant view that “Japan” has served solely as the Other in Western thought and rather establishes the manner in which authors and filmmakers have used this theme as an opportunity to subvert the status quo and interrogate modernity’s excess.
