    NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Li’l Liza Jane … Newspaper Publisher The first Jazz recording on a phonograph record was by Nick LaRocca’s Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB) on the Victor Label (No. 18255), recorded on February 26 and released on April 15, 1917. The two sides were “Livery Stable Blues” and “Dixieland Jass Band One-Step”. The band consisted of five New Orleans natives who would later change “jass” to “jazz” when they discovered that youthful pranksters would obscure the first letter of the word “jass” on their promotional posters. This record was immediately popular, and within months sales reached a million and a half copies. A Maison Blanche Department Store ad in New Orleans touted the recording as “positively the greatest dance record ever”. The Jazz Age, aka the Roaring Twenties, was beginning to roar. But the group had previously signed a recording contract with Columbia. In order to capitalize on the new jazz ballyhoo (and to provide a replacement for the ODJB), the Victor Talking Machine Company promoted Earl Fuller’s Famous Jazz Band. On September 10, 1917, Victor released Fuller’s recording of “Li’l Liza Jane”, written by Countess Ada de Lachau in 1916. The song had been featured in the play “Come Out of the Kitchen” which ran at George M. Cohan’s Theatre (on Broadway and West 43rd) from October 1916 to May 1917. The beautiful and petite film actress, Marguerite Clark (4 feet-10 inches tall), played the lead role in the movie version of the play in 1919.

DiLullo Gehling All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Since the late 1960s and early 1970s, critical scholarship concerning the fairy tale genre has done much to address the social, historical, cultural, and national motivations behind transformations of the fairy tale from a European starting point. However, the fairy tale’s development in the United States, including both its media-based adaptations and literary extensions, has been given limited attention. While the significance of Walt Disney’s animated films to the American fairy tale tradition has been addressed (by literary and film scholars alike), an interdisciplinary study drawing together Disney’s European and early twentieth century precursors (from literature, stage, and film); his own influential, modern debut; respondent literary and animated work of his immediate successors; and postmodern and twenty-first century adaptations has not been done. By examining the trajectory of a single tale, Snow White (or for Disney, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), this dissertation aims to acknowledge the scholarly attention given to Disney’s animated films, while further examining attributes which I suggest have enabled Disney to have a “folkloric impact” on the fairy tale genre in the United States.

Searle Dawley, 1910) Penny Starfield Université Caen Normandie Introduction Film history is marked by a series of frontier crossings that may be technological, artistic or ideological. At times specific dates signal an inevitable change; at others, transformation occurs gradually and, frequently, the import of events is only realized in retrospect. Such a turning point may be the year 1908 with, on the one hand, the forging of the main film companies under Thomas Edison’s aegis into the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC) – more commonly known as The Trust – and, on the other, the move to “art films” with the creation of Paul Lafitte’s Film d’Art company in Paris. Two French companies, Pathé Frères and Méliès, were members of the Trust, the latter owning several studios in the United States, and the former supplying one third of the films shown in this country.9 Along with importer and distributor George Kleine, geopolitical borders were indeed being crossed, although the other companies – Edison, Biograph, Vitagraph, Essanay, Kalem, Selig and Lubin – may be considered “American”, despite the European origins of some of their heads.10 Generally, the close of the first decade of the twentieth century saw changes in filmic endeavors and expectations. The following study discusses possible transformations by focusing on two films released in 1910, White Fawn’s Devotion, and Edison’s Frankenstein. Despite their cinematic and generic differences, both films have in common their treatment of an internalized frontier which they attempt to externalize by particular usage of screen space.

    Who is the Centre of the Movie Universe? Using Python and NetworkX to Analyse the Social Network of Movie Stars Rhyd Lewis School of Mathematics, Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales. [email protected], http://www.rhydlewis.eu February 27, 2020 Abstract This paper provides the technical details of an article originally published in The Conversation in February 2020 [11]. The purpose is to use centrality measures to analyse the social network of movie stars and thereby identify the most “important” actors in the movie business. The analysis is presented in a step-by-step, tutorial- like fashion and makes use of the Python programming language together with the NetworkX library. It reveals that the most central actors in the network are those with lengthy acting careers, such as Christopher Lee, Nassar, Sukumari, Michael Caine, Om Puri, Jackie Chan, and Robert De Niro. We also present similar results for the movie releases of each decade. These indicate that the most central actors since the turn of the millennium include people like Angelina Jolie, Brahmanandam, Samuel L. Built 1912; architects, Ingalls & Hoffman. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1015, Lot 51. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Little Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 42). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty witnesses spoke in favor of designation. One witness spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The building of the Little Theater marked a new direction in the history of the Broadway stage, and in the design of Broadway theaters. Designed by Ingalls & Hoffman and built in 1912, the Little Theater's neo­ Colonial styling lent an air of charm and mild eccentricity to a Broadway then accustomed to a more formal Classical or Beaux-Arts design. Commissioned by Winthrop Ames, an independently weal thy producer with an architectural background and unusual ideas about drama, the Little Theater was designed to house the new, detailed type of drama called "intimate theater." Ames had observed and listened to intimate drama in the United States and particularly in Europe where he traveled extensively; he had seen the architectural prototypes, such as London's Little Theater and Berlin's Chamber Theater, for what he envisioned would be his own Broadway showcase for this alternative theater.
