JERRY, GEORGE and ELAINE look impatient as they stand empty- handed, waiting for something. The DEPUTY walks back towards the jail building behind them. CUT TO: INT. LOWELL MASSACHUSETTS JAIL KRAMER is surrounded by teary-eyed guards and inmates. They love him. He's carrying a metal cafeteria tray covered with signatures, as well as scores of cards, notes and letters. Several in the crowd hug KRAMER. CUT TO: EXT. LOWELL MASSACHUSETTS JAIL KRAMER stumbles as he walks up to GEORGE, ELAINE and JERRY. CUT TO: EXT. SOMEWHERE IN RURAL MASSACHUSETTS -- DAY We see an ugly old school bus at a dead stop with the flashers on. "LARRY'S NYC BUS SERVICE" is painted sloppily on the side. An extremely old man herds dozens of stubborn sheep across the road. He's moving at an impossibly slow pace. CUT TO: INT. OLD SCHOOL BUS JERRY, GEORGE and ELAINE are sitting in bus's original kid- sized bench seats. They look bored and uncomfortable. 2. Cheerful KRAMER is in the front row chatting with the DRIVER and pointing at the animals outside. CUT TO: INT. HALLWAY IN FRONT OF JERRY'S APARTMENT -- LATER KRAMER & JERRY walk wearily towards their doors. -

Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

HUMOR AND PHILOSOPHY IN THE MOVIES OF JOEL AND ETHAN COEN A Report of a Senior Study by Geoffrey Bokuniewicz Major: Writing/Communication Maryville College Spring, 2014 Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Faculty Supervisor Date approved ___________, by _____________________ Division Chair Abstract This is a two-part senior thesis revolving around the works of the film writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen. The first seven chapters deal with the humor and philosophy of the Coens according to formal theories of humor and deep explication of their cross-film themes. Though references are made to most of their films in the study, the five films studied most in-depth are Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, and A Serious Man. The study looks at common structures across both the Coens’ comedies and dramas and also how certain techniques make people laugh. Above all, this is a study on the production of humor through the lens of two very funny writers. This is also a launching pad for a prospective creative screenplay, and that is the focus of Chapter 8. PLAYING FOR 3 OR MORE PLAYERS: Throughout the game, players will try to match their answers with the most popular survey answers. Each game consists of three parts: The Face-Off, The Feud and The Fast Money Bonus Round. THE SCOREBOARD: The scoreboard is used to keep track of the game as follows: 1. The Face-Off and The Feud rounds, the answers and points are placed in the scoreboard section, with the number one answer and it’s points placed at one, the number two answer and it’s points placed at two, etc. 2. At the end of each survey question, the points are totaled and placed under that team’s number in The Feud section of the 5th Edition scoreboard. INSTRUCTIONS 3. In The Fast Money Bonus Round, one side of the scoreboard is used by one player for his answers and the AND ROUNDS 1-45 opposite side for his teammate. Wood THE TAX LAWYER TAXES 7/05/2014 Seinfeld's 10 Enduring Lessons---About The IRS On Seinfeld’s 25th anniversary–it debuted July 5th, 1989–it is being discussed again around today’s version of the water cooler. Yes, Seinfeld at 25: There’s Still Nothing Else Like It. Turns out even a show about nothing can teach us something, including tax lessons like these: 1. IRS Has Power. In “The Truth,” aired September 25, 1991, the IRS asks Jerry about a $50 charitable contribution to rescue the people of Krakatoa. When the charity turned out to be fake, Jerry says the IRS is “like the mafia. They can take anything they want.” That may seem overstated, but it’s true that the IRS has a lot of power. Never forget it. 2. Timing Matters. Sure, the IRS has power, but there are limits too. Jerry’s audit was for 1986, and the show aired in 1991. If Jerry filed his 1986 tax return in 1987, this audit was beyond the three year statute of limitations. In some cases, how long can IRS audit depends on you, but there are plenty of procedural safeguards if you file on time, respond to notices promptly, and keep the administrative process going. 1997 Emmy Awards – photo by Alan Light (Photo credit: Wikipedia) 3. Write-Offs Count. In “The Package,” aired October 17, 1996, Kramer convinces Jerry to say his stereo was broken during shipping. "PRIVATE LINES" an episode for Seinfeld Written By Shaun Breidbart Copyright 1992 by Shaun Breidbart. All Rights Reserved. (I wrote this script after only maybe three episodes of the show had aired– without the book typically prepared by a TV show for outside writers that details information on the show about the characters, etc. Some of what's here actually ended up in later episodes– what's known to writers as parallel development, when two people independently come up with the same idea. Other stuff might be inconsistent with what came later in the show, but that's typical of early free-lance TV scripts. Remember, this was written back when the show had three stand-up routines per episode– at the beginning, middle and end of the show, as the original idea for the show was that what happened in the show would inspire his stand-up routines.) FADE IN: INT. NIGHT. COMEDY CLUB Jerry on stage. JERRY Why do they put pictures of 'America's Most Wanted' on the wall at the post office? Nobody looks at them anymore. With so much crime, there just isn't room on the walls for all the posters anyway, even if you have all day, waiting in line, to read. If they wanted to get our attention, they should put photos of dangerous criminals right on the stamps... and the postage could be a percentage of the reward. Really dangerous criminals go on the express mail stamp. Fifteen bucks to mail, a hundred fifty thousand dollars for catching them. No so bad guys, ten thousand reward, go on the ten cent stamp.
