The secondary broke up 5 passes, with Erik Daugenti knocking away two and picking off a pass. Jack Welcsh also had an inter- ception, while Emmett Hanna blocked a punt in the third quarter. Expect the Wildcats to rotate players in and out this week to stay fresh.

4TH DOWN ARMY: Rory McConville and Declan Mangan will share time as kickers this year. McConville will handle PATs and short field goals, while Mangan will take care of kickoffs, punts, and lengthy field goals.

CAPTAINS: The four captains for the 2019 season are Griffin Hanna, Jack Welcsh, Nick Schwitzgebel, and Michael McNamara. Ignatiuswildcats.com 3 ABOUT MENTOR ... Learning about the Cardinals ... 2019 Mentor OPENING STATEMENT: The Mentor Cardinals began the season last Thursday vs. St. Edward, earning a 29-28 win at Lakewood Schedule Stadium. The victory gave the Cards revenge for a playoff defeat to the Eagles to end the 2018 season. Mentor will look to defeat 8/29 vs. St. Edward W, 29-28 the Eagles and Wildcats for the second straight season. JTO Stadium

LAST SEASON FOR A LEGEND: Over the last 22 seasons, Steve Trivisonno has built a powerhouse program in Mentor. Trivisonno 9/6 vs. Saint Ignatius 7 pm has coaches countless great young men, including a number of JTO Stadium NFLers such as Mitch Trubisky. Trivisonno’s 23rd season will be his last as the Cardinals’ coach, as he announced over the offseason. 9/13 vs. Football North 7 pm He’ll look to notch his 200th victory and lead the Cardinals to the JTO Stadium program’s first state title in his last lap. Trivisonno holds a 10-9 advantage on the gridiron over his friend, Chuck Kyle. 9/20 @ Elyria 7 pm KIPP’S COUNTRY: Ian Kipp returns for his second season at the Ely Stadium helm for Mentor. As a sophomore, Kipp led the Cardinals quite well, showcasing a live arm and fast feet. In the first start of his ju- 9/27 vs. Medina 7 pm nior season, Kipp threw for 127 yards and ran for 121 yards. Thanks in part to Kipp, the Cards notched a 6-1 record at the JTO in 2018. JTO Stadium

TROBEL TROUBLE: Running back Brian Trobel is a fearsome 10/4 @ Solon 7 pm weapon for defenses to stop. The senior is tough to bring down, Stewart Field as he does not go down on first contact. Trobel carried the ball 28 times for 192 yards vs. St. Edward in Week 1. Last year, Trobel managed 75 yards rushing and 16 yards receiving vs. the Wildcats. 10/11 vs. Brunswick 7 pm Kipp and Trobel will often line up alone in the backfield and run JTO Stadium RPOs, or option plays in the red zone. 10/19 @ Shaker Heights 1 pm DEEP THREAT: Luke Floriea is a deadly fast wideout with speed Rupp Field to burn. The senior can get behind defenses with consistency and catches any ball near him. Floriea will be Mentor’s top wideout to watch on Friday evening. 10/25 vs. Euclid 7 pm JTO Stadium “THE YOUNG DUDES”: The Mentor offensive line is inexperienced, but very good. As Coach Trivisonno told Cleveland.com’s Matt 11/1 @ Strongsville 7 pm Goul after Thursday’s win: “The offensive line, for young dudes, they’re pretty darn good.” Mentor graduated much of its talented Pat Catan Stadium offensive line from last year, leaving a young core in place for 2019. The youngsters are certainly off to a good start to the season.

DEFENSIVE SCHEMES: Mentor’s base defense is a 3-man front with one standup linebacker at the line of scrimmage and two backers about 5 yards back. The defensive backfield plays a mix of coverages, alternating between a Cover 2 (2 deep safeties), Cover 4 (quarter defense), and man coverage. The Cardinals like to alter- nate looks in the secondary.

BEWARE THE BLITZ: Mentor’s defense is made dangerous by the blitz. The Cardinals’ 3 linebackers can blitz or sit in coverage on any given play, giving Mentor some flexibility. Watch out for vary- ing blitzes intended to confuse quarterbacks. Screens might be a good way for the Cats to beat the blitz, as did the Eagles.
