Page 1 The State of Art Criticism Art criticism is spurned by universities, but widely produced and read. It is seldom theorized, and its history has hardly been investigated. The State of Art Criticism presents an international conversation among art historians and critics that considers the relation between criticism and art history, and poses the question of whether criticism may become a university subject. Participants include Dave Hickey, James Panero, Stephen Melville, Lynne Cook, Michael Newman, Whitney Davis, Irit Rogoff, Guy Brett, and Boris Groys. James Elkins is E.C. Chadbourne Chair in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His many books include Pictures and Tears, How to Use Your Eyes, and What Painting Is, all published by Routledge. Michael Newman teaches in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is Professor of Art Writing at Goldsmiths College in the University of London. History of the Sakura Tree in New York in 1912, Over 5,000 Sakura (Cherry) Trees Were Gifted from Japan to the U.S
History of the Sakura Tree in New York In 1912, over 5,000 sakura (cherry) trees were gifted from Japan to the U.S. as a symbol of lasting friendship between the two countries. Over 3,000 trees from the City of Tokyo to the City of Washington, D.C. and 2,000 from the Committee of Japanese Residents of New York to New York City were were sent. Since that time, Japanese organizations have made gifts of cherry trees to America to promote friendship between Japan and the United States. The 2,000 sakura trees given to NY were a replacement for an earlier gift from Japan for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration in 1909, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s demonstration of his steam- powered boat on the Hudson River and the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s discovery of the Hudson River. Unfortunately, the tree saplings in 1909 were destroyed due to infestation with insects and nematodes. The new shipment arrived in New York in 1912 and they were planted in Sakura Park, located on the Upper West side of Manhattan. Knoedler & Company Monday, March 7, 2016 The Forger’s Art In a case involving the sale of a fake or forged work of art, typically the first order of business is for the plaintiff to establish that the work is, in fact, not authentic, with each side marshaling its experts. In the case of the De Sole Rothko, this step was unnecessary. Before the trial commenced, Rosales entered a plea, admitting guilt, in a criminal action brought by the U.S. government. In a statement read into the record at the time of her plea, Rosales admitted that “I agreed with others to sell works of art claimed to be created by various expressionist artists, including Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Motherwell, and to make false representations as to the authenticity and provenance of those works…All of the works I sold to [Knoedler Gallery] …were, in fact, fakes.”[1] Rosales’s accomplices – her boyfriend, art dealer Jose Carlos Bergantiños Diaz, his brother, Jesus Angel Bergantiños Diaz, and the actual forger, Pei Shen Qian[2] – were also indicted.[3] All three men fled the United States – the Diaz brothers to Spain and Qian to China. [4] There are two distinct roles in every forgery scheme – the artist and the con man. Some forgers, like Han Van Meegeren,[5] Elmyr de Hory,[6] Eric Hebborn,[7] Ken Perenyi,[8] and Wolfgang Beltracchi,[9] combine both in a single person. They are impresarios of fraud. But this is not always the case.
