I’m French and have been living in New Zealand since 2001. I’m an artist. A painter. Each week I check “The Big idea” website for any open call for artists. On Saturday the 29th of June 2013, I answered an artist call titled: “Artist for a fringe campaign on Porn” posted by the organisation: The Porn Project. This diary documents the process of my work around this project. I’m not a writer and English is not even my first language. Far from a paper, this diary only serves one purpose: documenting my process while working on ‘The Porn Project’. Note: I have asked my friend Becky to proof-read the diary to make sure my ‘FrenchGlish’ is not too distracting for English readers. But her response was “your FrenchGlish is damn cute”. So I assume she has left it as is… © Anne-Sophie Adelys - 2013 - www.adelys.co.nz 4 4 © Anne-Sophie Adelys - 2013 - www.adelys.co.nz The artist call as per The Big Idea post (http://www.thebigidea.co.nz) Artists for a fringe campaign on porn 28 June 2013 Organisation/person name: The Porn Project Work type: Casual Work classification: OTHER Job description: The Porn Project A Fringe Art Campaign Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand August, 2013 In 2012, Pornography in the Public Eye was launched by people at the University of Auckland to explore issues in relation to pornography through research, art and community-based action. -

The Élan Vital of DIY Porn
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 1 (March 2015) The Élan Vital of DIY Porn Shaka McGlotten In this essay, I borrow philosopher Henri Bergson’s concept élan vital, which is translated as vital force or vital impetus, to describe the generative potential evident in new Do-It- Yourself (DIY) pornographic artifacts and to resist the trend to view porn as dead or dead- ening. Bergson employed this idea to challenge the mechanistic view of matter held by the biological sciences of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, a view that considered the stuff of life to be reducible to brute or inert matter. Bergson argued, rather, that matter, insofar as it undergoes continuous change, is itself alive and not because of an immaterial, animat- ing principle, but because this liveliness is intrinsic to matter itself. I use Bergson’s élan vi- tal to think through the liveliness of gay DIY porn and for its contribution to a visual his- tory of desire, for the ways it changes the relationships between consumers and producers of pornography, and the ways it realizes new ways of stretching the pornographic imagination aesthetically and politically. It’s Alive I jump between sites. I watch a racially ambiguous young man with thick, muscular legs standing in front of a nondescript bathtub. He whispers, “I’m so horny right now,” rub- bing his cock beneath red Diesel boxer briefs. He turns and pulls his underwear down, arching his back to reveal a hairy butt. Turning to the camera again he shows off his modestly equipped, but very hard, dick. -

Art Spiegelman's Experiments in Pornography

A NOTE ON VERSIONS The version presented here may differ from the published version. If citing, you are advised to consult the published version for pagination, volume/issue and date of publication Art Spiegelman’s ‘Little Signs of Passion’ and the emergence of hard-core pornographic feature film Paul Williams In 1973 Bob Schneider and the underground comix1 creator Art Spiegelman compiled Whole Grains: A Book of Quotations. One of the aphorisms included in their book came from D. H. Lawrence: ‘What is pornography to one man is the laughter of genius to another’.2 Taking a cue from this I will explore how Spiegelman’s comic ‘Little Signs of Passion’ (1974) turned sexually explicit subject matter into an exuberant narratological experiment. This three-page text begins by juxtaposing romance comics against hard-core pornography,3 the former appearing predictable and artificial, the latter raw and shocking, but this initial contrast breaks down; rebutting the defenders of pornography who argued that it represented a welcome liberation from repressive sexual morality, ‘Little Signs of Passion’ reveals how hard-core filmmakers turned fellatio and the so-called money shot (a close-up of visible penile ejaculation) into standardised narrative conventions yielding lucrative returns at the box office. -

The answers provided were then collated into a ‘virtual’ discussion. In a brief concluding section, the contributors’ answers are reflected upon holistically in the hopes of shedding light on the changing face of gay male pornography. Keywords: gay male pornography; gay male culture; bareback sex; pornography It is safe to say that gay male pornography has changed. Gone are the brick and mortar adult video stores with wall-to-wall shelves of pornographic DVDs and Blu-rays for rental and sale. -
Participatory Porn Culture Feminist Positions and Oppositions in the Internet Pornosphere Allegra W
from Paul G. Nixon and Isabel K. Düsterhöft (Eds.) Sex in the Digital Age. New York: Rougledge, 2018. CHAPTER 2 Participatory porn culture Feminist positions and oppositions in the internet pornosphere Allegra W. Smith Introductions: pornography, feminisms, and ongoing debate Though first-wave feminists had engaged in debate and advocacy surrounding sexual knowledge and obscenity since the late-19th century (Horowitz, 2003), American advocates did not begin to address pornography as a feminist concern until the 1970s, ostensibly beginning with the formation of the activist group Women Against Violence in Pornography and Media (WAVPM) in 1978. WAVPM was a reactionary response to the mainstreaming of hardcore pornography in the wake of American sexual liberation, which many second wave feminists claimed “…encouraged rape and other acts of violence, threatening women’s safety and establishing a climate of terror that silenced women and perpetuated their oppression… [thus helping] create and maintain women’s subordinate status” (Bronstein, 2011, pp. 178–179). The resulting “porn wars” (or, more broadly, “sex wars”) of the 1980s and 1990s polarized second- and third-wave feminists into two camps: (1) anti-porn feminists, such as writer Andrea Dworkin (1981) and legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon (1984), who opposed the creation and distribution of pornographic images and videos on moral and political grounds; and (2) pro-porn or sex-positive feminists, such as anthropologist Gayle Rubin and feminist pornographer Candida Royalle, who advocated for freedom of sexual expression and representation. The rhetoric surrounding the social and cultural ills perpetuated by pornography was duly acrimonious, with one prominent feminist writing, “pornography is the theory, rape is the practice” (Morgan, 1978, p. -

Though derided by critics, this newly minted genre had two notable features: broader narratives within which sex occurred, and an insistent focus on the visual display of male pleasure. Plotting Sex claims that, by embedding sex within a story, sex itself takes on narrative qualities. To support this claim, it teases out small shifts in the twentieth century’s episteme that collectively contributed to the early 1970s emergence of what it terms pornography’s performatistic screen, or the base, plotted structure of bodily performance and engagement underpinning sexual displays as enacted over time in orgasmically-oriented hard core film. This project starts with the twin Foucaultian poles of law and “human sciences” as represented by the metonyms of American obscenity jurisprudence and sexology, finding in both a late 1960s pivot to issues of social construction and utility as tethered to narrative. -
Revenge Pornº: an Evaluation of the Elements That Make an Effective Nonconsensual Pornography Statute
DECONSTRUCTING THE STATUTORY LANDSCAPE OF ªREVENGE PORNº: AN EVALUATION OF THE ELEMENTS THAT MAKE AN EFFECTIVE NONCONSENSUAL PORNOGRAPHY STATUTE Jonathan S. Sales and Jessica A. Magaldi* INTRODUCTION Changes in social mores and technology have yielded the phenomenon of sext- ing, which includes the capturing and forwarding of intimate images through the Internet.1 Research reveals that nearly ®fty percent of adults in the United States have sent or received intimate digital content. 2 At the same time, the con¯uence of these changes has spawned new violations of privacy and predatory actions when these images are made available on the Internet without the subject's consent.3 The re-distribution or dissemination of these intimate images without the consent of the subject and without a legitimate purpose (such as a law enforcement investigation) is referred to as nonconsensual pornography (ªNCPº). 4 NCP has caused victims to suffer substantial harm.5 In some cases, NCP inci- dents have precipitated a victim's suicide.6 Prior generations might have concluded that a person who allowed such images to be captured and placed in the possession of another person assumed the risk of re-distribution; in essence, a negligence, recklessness, or constructive consent argument. In contrast, in the twenty-®rst cen- tury, capturing or sharing of intimate images is often regarded as an acceptable * Jonathan S.
