    OCULUS JUNE 1961 NEW YORK CHAPTER AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT The reports of the various committees of the Chapter constitute the real story of Chapter activities during the year. It remains, therefore, for the President merely to comment on the genial atmosphere, to indicate cer­ tain highlights and, perhaps, to off er some hopes and plans for the future. It has been a busy year and our committees have, for the most part, been extremely active. Those of you who do not serve on any committee cannot appreciate the amount of time, effort, and imaginative thinking given by many devoted Chapter members of the benefit of the profession and toward the improvement of its service to society. It would be invidi­ ous to single out a few committees for special mentfon. The committee reports speak for themselves and I strongly urge you to read them. Each year it seems that the interest and influence of the Chapter grows and spreads and makes greater demands on those members who are willing to devote themselves to unselfish work for the general good. The Chapter Committees do not exist and are not created just for the sake of having committees. They exist or are appointed because work has to be done, a problem ·solved, or a situation met. When the usefulness of a committee ends its existence is terminated, and attention given to some other matter requiring it. That is why there is always room for more help. It occurs that some committees seem to have more popular appeal than others so that some willing helpers are disappointed in not getting their first choice.

Cobb; A Stamp on the City's Direction. Master of Arts (Art History), December, 1986, 174 pp., Illustrations, Bibliography. The purpose of this study is to examine I. M. Pei and his partner Harry Cobb's downtown Dallas architecture within the context of their overall stylistic development. This paper explores the structure of five buildings within the framework of the city, and addresses their possible influence on the city's future architectural direction. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter I introduces and states the problem as it discusses the fabric of Dallas architecture. Chapter II outlines a brief biography of I. M. Pei, looking to those who have influenced him, while discussing the key public buildings of his stylistic development.     Structural Design in Building Conservation No building is properly conserved if it is not structurally sound. Consequently architects, engineers and conservation officers need an adequate grounding in the technology as well as in the materials and the historic origins of the building. Structural interventions to historic buildings are however an inte- gral part of the effort to select and update their design and their historic and cultural values. Structural Design in Building Conservation deals with such design issues and shows how technical choices integrate with the plan- ning and architectural outcomes in a conservation project. It brings together theory with current conservation technology, discussing the possibilities of structural details and strategies in architectural expression, and is particularly directed at students of architectural conservation technology and practising engineers and architects. Central to this outline is the discussion of case studies, which is organised around such themes as addition of roofs, requalification of space, strengthening and re-use of fabric, repristination, additions, completions, stiffness adjustments and the correction of past mistakes etc, and the reader is encouraged to appraise directly the solutions. The book introduces the philosophy of structural interventions within the range of conservation theories and discusses practices in various European countries. It then outlines the main types of strengthening, repairs and interventions in terms of building types and the structural nature of the main elements to be strengthened (linear structures, frames, plates and shells). Significant case studies are presented that cover a very wide range of historic types and conversions, not only monumental masonry structures like neoclassical buildings, major temples, churches, public buildings and muse- ums, but also more utilitarian structures like historic mills, early reinforced concrete structures and vaulting types.

Ritchie on February 22, 1993 in New York, New York. Ritchie: I’d like to start today by your telling me your earliest recollections of hearing that the Gallery was going to be doing a new building or an expansion of some kind. Do you remember how you first heard about it? Pei: Yes. I think I was interviewed by the board, actually. The board at that time consisted of Mr. [Paul] Mellon, Carter Brown, Mr. [John Hay] Whitney, and his lawyer, Stoddard Stevens, [who is] no longer with us. Then they went about--I don’t know which came first. It was a long time ago, 1970. Then they went all over the United States in Mr. Mellon’s plane to look at works done by each of us. I don’t even know who the others were. There were obviously quite a few other candidates besides myself. The next thing I heard was that the group visited Boulder, Colorado. Mr. [Walter Orr] Roberts, my client, was very interested in this and he called me and told me that they came, and that he did the best he could to show them our project [The National Center for Atmospheric Research].
