It addresses opinions on the inclusion of climate change mitigation strategies (such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation—REDD+) into cocoa production, and potential obstacles and roles of stakeholders in ensuring community acceptance of such strategies in a unique multiple land use area—the Krokosua Hills Forest Reserve. Data from the Ghana Meteorological Agency and through survey of 205 cocoa farmers were assessed with Mann-Kendall, Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Farmers’ perceptions of changes in climate were notably diverse and did not always match historic weather data, but accurately described increases in temperature and drought which are linked to cocoa productivity. Farmers appreciate the importance of tree maintenance for ecosystem services but were skeptical of financially rewarding climate change strategies which favor tree protection.

USD FLP: Global Administration of Health Services May 8 – 21, 2016 TENTATIVE ITINERARY (Subject to change without notice) Day 1 - Depart the US for Ghana Flight details and exact dates to be determined Day 2 - Arrival in Accra Welcome at the airport. Transfer to hotel with your guide, Nathan. Welcome drink at the hotel. If anyone is still hungry, Nathan will show everyone a good place to eat. • Hotel: Afia African Village (hot water, AC, stand-•‐by generator and WIFI) • http://www.afiavillage.com Day 3 - Accra: Colonial Areas, Mausoleum, Market [BLD] Breakfast at the hotel AM: Get over jetlag with visits to Accra's highlights: The Colonial Areas, Mausoleum and Market. The Colonial Areas include Jamestown, Usshertown and the Lighhouse, the oldest districts in Accra. The names come from the 17th century British James Fort and Ussher Fort. The Nkrumah Mausoleum houses the tomb of Kwane Nkrumah, who declared Ghana's independence from the very spot where is brone statue stands. In 1957, he became the first sub-•‐Saharan leader to gain independence. In 1966, he was ousted in a coup and fled to Guinea, never to return to Ghana alive. The Accra Market has an impressive wealth of products and foods from around the country spread out in seemingly no particular order through the winding walkways. The prices start high, and bargaining is expected. It is large enough to spend the rest of your day here, perhaps, but you'll have a chance to come back another day on your own if you like. Those who are too tired to go to the market (it is a bit of a drive) can relax at the restaurant on the beach and enjoy the view.

  • An Assessment of Government Policy Response to HIV/AIDS in Ghana
ARTICLE ORIGINAL An assessment of government policy response to HIV/AIDS in Ghana JN Fobil, IN Soyiri ABSTRACT The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has assumed a dimension raising heartbreaking anxiety among national governments and civil society groups. In Ghana for example, the pandemic is well-documented and has gone beyond a health problem, and now encompasses all socio-economic aspects of life. The estimated rate of infection from the mid-1980s to 2000 has more than doubled, and in spite of the control efforts by various groups and organisations, prevalence of the disease has not declined notably. This paper assesses government policy, programmes and strategies to combat the disease, using analysis of time trend sentinel data and weighting these against control efforts. The assessment revealed that 380 000 adults and 36 000 children are currently infected. There are wide spatial variations in prevalence across the country and the overall national prevalence has fluctuated over time, standing at 2.6% in 2000, 3.6% in 2002 and 3.1% in 2004.This appears relatively lower than in adjacent countries, where prevalence is around 5% and over 25% in East and Southern African countries. Although the review found a robust multipronged government intervention approach to containing the disease, we are hesitant to claim that the fairly stable or low national prevalence in Ghana compared with its immediate neighbours may have been the consequence of the effectiveness of national AIDS control programmes and impact of government interventions. Keywords: assessment response, sentinel surveillance system, prevalence, vulnerability, generalised epidemic.

DREF operation n°. MDRGH001 Glide no. FL-2009-000132-GHA Ghana: Floods 16 July, 2009 The International Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross and Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters. CHF 101,314 (USD 93,290 or EUR 66,887) has been allocated from the Federation’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Ghana Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance to 1,000 vulnerable targeted households. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged. Summary: Several hours of rain in the night of Friday 19 June, 2009 and subsequent heavy down pours along the coastal and forest belt of Ghana from 6 to 9 July, 2009 caused massive Flooded areas in Ghana/Red Cross of Ghana destruction of private and public properties in most communities in the western parts of Accra, Eastern, Volta, Central, Western and Ashanti Regions. Heavy rains are falling down all over the country. The floods were caused by choked and narrow gutters and the erection of structures and buildings on watercourses. The disaster coordination body in Ghana (NADMO) indicated that 19,755 people are affected. This operation is expected to be implemented over four months, and will therefore be completed by November 2009; a Final Report will be made available three months after the end of the operation (by February, 2010).
