It is heartening to note that COMSATS University, from the very first day will have top ranking. The National Assembly has passed the bill to bestow status of university upon COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), a Public-Sector Degree Awarding Institute. The bill was presented by the Federal Minister of Science and Technology Rana Tanveer Hussain. A consensus was reached by the parliament after much debate. The up gradation of CIIT to a ‘University’ is a significant milestone in the Institute’s quest for becoming the nation’s premier higher education inspiration with strong national and international standings. On this auspicious occasion, Rector of the CIIT, Prof Dr Raheel Qamar (Tamgha-i-Imtiaz) thanked ALLAH for His Blessings and acknowledged the efforts and guidance of Rana Tanveer Hussain, the Founding Rector and Chairman Board of Governors of CIIT. He expressed his gratitude to the Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) Prof Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, all Board members, management of the Institute for their contributions. The Rector CIIT further expressed his gratitude to the Government of Pakistan and Parliament for appreciating and considering the status of the Institute among all Higher Education Institutions and Universities of the country. 3 4 Celebrate World Book Day LIS COMSATS University Danish Society of Library Information Services, COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus celebrated the World Book Day on May 9, 2018. Renowned personalities including Justice (R) Nasira Javed Iqbal, Amjad Islam Amjad, Salman Ghani, Imran Khan, Bilal Ahmad and Aslam Dogar honored the occasion with their presence and participated as guest 5 speakers.Guest speakers threw light on the importance of “TheBook”. They appreciated the effort made by LIS department. In the end Mr. Amjad Islam Amjad and Justice (R) Nasira Javed Iqbal delivered shields and certificates to guests and organizers respectively. 6 7 The Book by Amjad Islam Amjad in which he threw light on the "کتاب" Urdu Poet Amjad Islam Amjad has shared his poem named significance of a book in ones’ life during the seminar to celebrate WorldBook Day 2018 at COMSATS. 8 New Employee’s Welcome “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work”. The library staff of CUI Lahorewelcomedthe newly inducted staff members includes Ali Raza, Jahanzaib Imtiaz & Anza Tariq& Muhammad Maaz in our Team. A dinner has been has arranged on May 26th at Gourmet Restaurant. The library in charge Dr. Muhammad Tariq, all library staff includes the newly inducted members attended the dinner. Ms. Tooba Ahmad was specially invited in this dinner. 9 PECAccreditation visit To give accreditation to EE-Electronics Program, PEC accreditation body visited COMSATS University Islamabad, Lahore Campus on May 11, 2018. They also visited library procedures, services and resources. They visited different sections of the library. Library in charge Dr. Muhammad Tariq briefed them about the library, particularly the section related to Electrical Engineering Department. PEC team was very much satisfied with the library and appreciated the efforts of library staff to provide the quality services to its users. 10 PASTIC Trainingof "Strengthening Innovation Library Leader" Workshop for the library Professionals on the topic of "Strengthening Innovation Library Leader" which was conducted by the Dr. Muhammad Tariq (In charge, Library Information services, COMSATS University Islamabad Lahore Campus). 11 Mr. Ghulam Farid Attend PASTIC Training Mr. Ghulam Farid (LDC Library) attended there weeks PASTIC National workshop on "Short Term Training Courses for Library Professionals" it was really productive and he gained a lot of knowledge and new ideas in the field of LIS. 12 Prize Distribution Ceremony Student Sports Week 2018 Students’ week is anold tradition of COMSATS University. During this week, not only students but faculty and staff also enjoy and prepare themselves again with a new energy to resume duties. Working on same theory, Library staff arranged sports and competitions among themselves. The details of the winners and runner ups are as follows. 1. The trip started with live music on the tour bus by the Faiz Ghar music class. On reaching the venue, the group found a quiet spot and spread their yoga mats to attend a vigorous yoga session conducted by Yogi Sham- shad Haider. By the time the session ended, the cold had disappeared, and many had taken o their woollies. The time was ripe for a fruit eating session. The more sporty among the group started playing football and frisbee. By this time the musicians had got their act together. The live music and dance session that followed became livelier when a large group of school girls and their teachers joined in. After a lot of food for the soul, the group was ready to attack Gogay kay Chaney, home made koftas, organic salads, and the most delicious rabri kheer. The group then took a tour of the jungle and the safari park. They enjoyed the wonderful ambience of the bamboo jungle, and the ostriches, deers, parakeet, swans, and many other wild animals and birds. Some members also took rides on the train and colour- ful donkey carts.

    Echoes and Exuberances: Baidar Bakht’s Recent Translations of Urdu Poetry T , and possibly the most gifted, translator of Urdu poetry into English these days is, no doubt, Baidar Bakht of Toronto, a specialist not in Urdu literature as one might expect, but rather in bridge engineering, a subject in which he holds a University of London D.Sc. One first noted his considerable talents as a translator in An Anthology of Modern Urdu Poetry (Delhi: Educational Publishing House, ) which he edited in collaboration with the Canadian poet Kathleen Grant Jaeger. Here, all renderings show Bakht and Jaeger to be deft and sensitive translators of the many “exuberances” of Urdu poetry into English.1 One cannot help but compare this anthology to Mahmood Jamal’s The Penguin Book of Modern Urdu Poetry (Harmondsworth, England: Penguin, ) which features one hundred poems by seventeen poets. As would be expected, there is some overlap of poets and poems in each volume.
