  • Ellen Rose, Viola Kristin Ditlow, Piano “There Are No Foreign Lands
AF1808 PROVIDENCE Ellen Rose, viola Kristin Ditlow, piano “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.” —Robert Louis Stevenson Any listener receiving the gift of the music on this disc might assume that the musical partnership between Ellen Rose and Kristin Ditlow began somewhere in the United States, but it was quite the contrary. It began in an airport shuttle in 2011 from the Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport to Sárospatak, Hungary. The destination of the shuttle was the Crescendo Nyári Akademia (Crescendo Summer Institute). A conversation that began between the newly- introduced musical colleagues yielded a promise to play together on a Tune-In (informal morning chapel) service. The piece was the fifth movement of Messiaen’s Quatour pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), and the title, Louange à l’Éternité de Jésus (Praise to the Eternity of Jesus). While this work was originally for cello and piano, it was arranged for viola by Ellen Rose. The performance took place about a week later. One of our faculty colleagues, Mari Salli (a pianist, originally from Finland, faculty member in Hungary, and working in mainland China) extended an invitation to the duo to perform during the 2012-2013 season at the National Theater in Kunming, China in the Yunnan Province. This invitation proved to be the center around which a multi-city tour was formed. From rehearsals and long-distance conversations, concerts planned, to tickets purchased, we embarked across the Pacific for a three-week tour of Beijing, Shanghai, and Kunming.

  • MAJOR COMPOSERS: BÉLA BARTÓK and GEORGE ENESCU Joint Romanian-Hungarian Stamp Issue
HUNGARIAN POST OFFICE – PHILATELIC DEPARTMENT H-1540 Budapest * Phone: +36 1 4871356 * Fax: +36 1 3557058 Internet: www.posta.hu * E-mail: [email protected] MAJOR COMPOSERS: BÉLA BARTÓK AND GEORGE ENESCU Joint Romanian-Hungarian stamp issue Magyar Posta and the Romanian ROMFILATELIA are jointly issuing a commemorative set of stamps entitled “Major Com- posers”. The designs of the set of two stamps show two ma- jor composers, Béla Bartók from Hungary and George Enescu from Romania, to mark the 125th anniversary of their birth. Béla Bartók (1881–1945), composer, pianist, musicologist, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Between 1892-96 he studied in Bratislava (then Pozsony) under László Erkel, the son of the celebrated Hungarian opera com- poser, and in 1899 he was passed into the Budapest Academy of Music. He began composing in the spirit of Brahms’ musical heritage. The years 1905–06 were a turning point in his career as a composer. His attention turned to folk music and with Zoltán Kodály’s help he began his systematic collecting work. In the years after World War I he was engaged on concerts abroad. He won recognition as a performer and composer around the world. As a folklorist, he spent the 1920–30s processing and academically assessing the enormous collection of folk songs he had amassed earlier. After the outbreak of World War II, he and his wife left Hungary and settled in the United States of America in 1940. His years in America were plagued by constant and worsening ill health, and hardship. He died in New York aged 64.

  • Romanian Folk Music for Bassoon and Piano
Romanian Folk Music for Bassoon and Piano: Three New Arrangements and Recordings from the Works of George Enescu and Béla Bartók by Sarah Burnett Rice-Misura A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved April 2020 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Albie Micklich, Chair Elizabeth Buck Catherine Saucier ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2020 ABSTRACT The bassoon has the ability to play in varying styles across multiple genres with repertoire spanning from the early Baroque era to the present day. Popular and frequently played pieces for the bassoon, such as concerti by Vivaldi, Mozart, and Weber, are frequently performed in recital, yet the rich musical tradition and repertory of Romanian folk music is seldom performed in the recital hall. The main reason for the shortcoming of this style of music in the bassoon repertoire can be attributed to the sheer lack of prominent composers writing original works for the bassoon in Romania compared to Western Europe. The purpose of this project is to add Romanian folk music to the bassoon repertoire by arranging and recording three pieces for bassoon and piano: Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A Major and Romanian Rhapsody No. 2 in D Major by George Enescu and the six- movement work Romanian Folk Dances by Béla Bartók. Included in this project is a section covering historical information on the arranged compositions, procedures of the transcription that explain the reasoning to alterations and adjustments from the original score are also incorporated in this document. Lastly, the transcribed scores and recordings of the arrangements are included in this document.
