Animal and Sporting Paintings in the Penkhus Collection: The Very English Ambience of It All includes sixty-one works that provide detailed glimpses into the English countryside, its occupants, and their activities, from around 1800 to the present. Thirty-six different artists, mostly British, are represented, among them key sporting and animal artists such as John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795–1865) and Harry Hall (1814–1882), and Royal Academicians James Ward (1769–1859) and Sir Alfred Munnings (1878–1959), the latter who served as President of the Royal Academy. Works in the exhibit feature images of racing, pets, hunting, and prized livestock including cattle and, especially, horses. -

Value and benefits of the Sports industry Introduction Sports is an important sector of economic activity and spans medical treatment and rehabilitation, research and development, sports tourism, sales and trade of sport products, construction and maintenance of sports venues, organisation sports events, and marketing and advertising. It also creates various job and business opportunities (e.g. engineers and developers, coaches and sport doctors, sport journalists and commentators, retailers of sports goods and equipment, etc.). It is also part of the increasingly important leisure industry and as such, has broader benefits such as boosting productivity, individual and community development as well as reducing the burden of ill health on society. Additionally, it has far reaching implications on the global economy due to its close association with other sectors including education, real estate and tourism. Sports is ranked among the top mainstream activities in the economy. Value of the sports industry globally Using economic impact methodology, which are largely developed around the estimated number of spectators visiting an event from outside the local region, and the amount those visitors spend on accommodation, food and entertainment etc; the estimated size of the global sports industry was US$1.3 trillion in 2015 according to Plunkett Research Ltd. A study in 2014 by A.T. Kearney, found that the market for sports events (i.e. revenues for tickets, media rights and sponsorship) is worth close to US$80 billion. Between 2009 and 2013 there was an annual growth of 7 per cent, faster than the GDP of most countries. Moreover, the sports industry generates as much as US$700 billion annually or a 1 per cent of global GDP when sporting goods, apparel, equipment, and health and fitness spending is included. -

SPORT AND THE An overview outlining the contribution of sport to the SDGs The United Nations have long recognized, advocated for and supported the important contribu- tions of sport to development and peace, with a significant record of General Assembly and Human Rights Council resolutions, UN treaties, Secretary-General’s reports and other guiding documents highlighting the unique potential of sport. The processes and milestones which led to the historic adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 were followed by the Sport for Development and Peace community with strong interest and a commitment to continue using sport as a unique tool to support this new global plan of action. As a result of joint efforts, particularly including UN Member States’ support to recognize the contribution of sport to the SDGs, Heads of State and Government and High Representatives declared in the Political Declaration for the new Agenda: Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the grow- ing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives (2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development A/RES/70/1, paragraph 37). This unprecedented recognition offers a compelling incentive and an unmissable opportunity for further joint efforts and action in the field Sport for Development and Peace. With the aspiration of leaving no one behind and maximizing the contribution of sport for a better and peaceful world, sport will continue advancing development as a powerful enabler of the SDGs, as it did for the preceding MDGs. -

Written evidence submitted by UK Sport DCMS SELECT COMMITTEE INQUIRY: SPORT IN OUR COMMUNITIES WRITTEN EVIDENCE SUBMITTED BY UK SPORT 27 November 2020 Introduction 1. UK Sport is the nation’s high-performance sports agency. We inspire the nation through Olympic and Paralympic success, ensure that the UK plays host to some of the world’s biggest sporting events, act as an international leader in sports governance and seek throughout to use the power of sport to enrich lives across communities and country alike. 2. Thanks to continued National Lottery and Exchequer investment, British athletes made history at the last Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio, winning more medals than the London Games in 2012; bringing home 67 Olympic and 147 Paralympic medals and all the while bringing together and inspiring our nation once more. When, following the Rio Games, the public was asked what made them most proud to be British, ‘Team GB’ was ranked second behind only the NHS. 3. We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide evidence to the Committee’s inquiry into ‘Sport in our Communities’. While UK Sport focuses on high performance, it is our fundamental belief that international sporting success, hosted major events, and the influence & impact of our world-class athletes makes a significant contribution to the wellbeing of communities across the nation. 7 Sport in Asia: Globalization, Glocalization, Asianization Peter Horton James Cook University, Townsville Australia 1. Introduction Sport is now a truly global cultural institution, one that is no longer the preserve of occidental culture or dominated and organized by Western nations, the growing presence and power of non-occidental culture and individual nations now makes it a truly globalized product and commodity. The insatiable appetite for sport of the enormous Asian markets is redirecting the global flow of sport, with the wider Asia Pacific region now providing massive new audiences for televised sports as the economies of the region continue their growth. This chapter will consider the process of sport’s development in the Asian and the wider Asia Pacific context through the latter phases of the global sportization process (Maguire, 1999). As the locus of the centre of gravity of global geopolitical power is shifting to the Asia Pacific region away from the Euro-Atlantic region the hegemonic sports are now assuming a far more cosmopolitan character and are being reshaped by Asian influences. This has been witnessed in the major football leagues in Europe, particularly the English Premier League and is manifest in the Indian Premier League cricket competition, which has spectacularly changed the face of cricket world-wide through what could be called its ‘Bollywoodization’(Rajadhyaskha, 2003). Perhaps this reflects ‘advanced’ sportization (Maguire, 1999) with the process going beyond the fifth global sportization phase in sport’s second globalization with ‘Asianization’ becoming a major cultural element vying with the previously dominant cultural traditions of Westernization and Americanization? This notion will be discussed in this paper by looking at Asia’s impact on the development of sport, through the three related lenses of: sportization; the global sports formation and, the global media-sport comple. -
