"The history of the Deaf is no longer only that of their education or of their hearing teachers. It is the history of Deaf people in its long march, with its hopes, its sufferings, its joys, its angers, its defeats and its victories." Bernard Truffaut (1993) Honor Thy Deaf History © Nancy Rourke 2011 Introduction The history of the DEAF-WORLD is one that has constantly had to counter the falsehood that has been attributed to Aristotle that "Those who are born deaf all become senseless and incapable of reason."1 Our long march to prove that being Deaf is all right and that natural signed languages are equal to spoken languages has been well documented in Deaf people's literary and artistic expressions. The 1999 World Federation of the Deaf Conference in Sydney, Australia, opened with the "Blue Ribbon Ceremony" in which various people from the global Deaf community stated, in part: "...We celebrate our proud history, our arts, and our cultures... we celebrate our survival...And today, let us remember that many of us and our ancestors have suffered at the hands of those who believe we should not be here. -
Deaf American Historiography, Past, Present, and Future
CRITICAL DISABILITY DISCOURSES/ 109 DISCOURS CRITIQUES DANS LE CHAMP DU HANDICAP 7 The Story of Mr. And Mrs. Deaf: Deaf American Historiography, Past, Present, and Future Haley Gienow-McConnella aDepartment of History, York University [email protected] Abstract This paper offers a review of deaf American historiography, and proposes that future scholarship would benefit from a synthesis of historical biography and critical analysis. In recent deaf historical scholarship there exists a tendency to privilege the study of the Deaf community and deaf institutions as a whole over the study of the individuals who comprise the community and populate the institutions. This paper argues that the inclusion of diverse deaf figures is an essential component to the future of deaf history. However, historians should not lapse in to straight-forward biography in the vein of their eighteenth and nineteenth-century predecessors. They must use these stories purposefully to advance larger discussions about the history of the deaf and of the United States. The Deaf community has never been monolithic, and in order to fully realize ‘deaf’ as a useful category of historical analysis, the definition of which deaf stories are worth telling must broaden. Biography, when coupled with critical historical analysis, can enrich and diversify deaf American historiography. Among findingsreported are: that Ss' scores on the Illinois Test of Psycho linguisticAbilities (ITPA, were alhost identical to the scores of normal hearing children;that Ss' scores on the Metropolitan AchievementTests Primer Battery were equal to those of hearing children in reading andwere lower in arithmetic; that scores on a Receptive Communicationscale showed sound alone,to be the least efficient communicationmode (44 percent) rising to 88 percent when speechreading, fingerspelling,aid signs were added; that improved scores on a test for understandingthe printed word (76 percent as compared to 56percent in 1973 and.38 percent in 1972) reflected increasing. -

Teachers of people who are hearing impaired are trained to use the acoustic channel and view signing as an obstacle to the integration of deaf people into mainstream Hungarian society. A recent news report describes how the British. Council is giving children's books to a Hungarian college for teachers of handicapped students, because the college believes in encouraging hearing impaired students' speaking skills through picture books rather than allowing then to use sign language. One Hungarian researcher writes that the use of Hungarian Sign Language hinders the efficiency of teaching students who are hard of hearing, because they often prefer it to spoken Hungarian. This paper suggests that the research obscures the difference between medically deaf children, who will never learn to hear, and hearing impaired children, who may learn to hear and speak to some extent. -

ABSTRACT Hearing Humanities: A Holistic Approach to Audiology Education Callie M. Boren Director: Jason Whitt, Ph.D. This thesis explores the intersection of Deaf/disability identity and the practice of audiology, and has three aims: first, to establish broad background information about the common cultures, identities, and models that relate to disability; second, to connect this background information to the personal and social domains of the lives of people with hearing loss; and finally, to establish current problems and provide direction in training future audiologists in order to ensure clinicians provide care that is above and beyond minimum ethical standards. The first aim will be accomplished by outlining the history and development of Deaf culture and its key features, framing the parallel history and development of disability culture and identity, and comparing and contrasting Deaf culture and identity with disability culture and identity. The second aim of this work will be accomplished by revisiting the definition of disability models, introducing the models that might have bearing on the lives of people with disabilities, and applying these models to the social experience of a person with hearing loss. The final aim of this work will be accomplished by establishing a brief history of the field of audiology, examining the ethics that guide audiology practice, defining and describing audiological counseling, and introducing a new approach to training clinicians that incorporates the humanities. Terrence McCabe This dissertation explores the relationship between Tanzanian deaf people and mainstream society, as well as dynamics within deaf communities. I argue that deaf people who do participate in NGOs and other organizations that provide support to deaf people, do so strategically. In order to access services and improve their own lives and the lives of their families, deaf people in Tanzania move comfortably and fluidly between identity groups that are labeled as disabled or only as deaf. Through intentional use of the interventions provided by various organizations, deaf people are able to carve out deaf spaces that act as places for transmission of information, safe areas to learn and use sign language, and sites of network and community development among other deaf people. -

The 1)io11eering work of Edvvard Klima and Ursula Bel lugi, from data collection to technical argumentation to acqt tiring funding for sign language research , has allowed a great number of scholars to be11efit either directly or indirectl y. Sttch be11efit has also accrt ted to n1embers of the Deaf· commltnity, who have always known that tl1ere existed a language and culture , but who are now empo,;vered to study it from tl1e inside . This piece, writte11 by a linguist , a psychologist, and an interpreter married to a Deaf man , demonstrates the influence that Klima and Be llugi have had on 1nany levels of scholarship and 011the lives of Deaf people. Dur ing a course on American Sign L anguagc (ASL) structure , a sign meaning "no good " came to our attention . It vva.s pe1formed using vvl1at appeared to be the British t,vo-ha.nded alphabet letters N-G. This sign ,,vas describ ed by Battison (1978) , but according to our informant , it was n.ot Britis h. It was "from the old alphabet - tl1e o.ne all the older De af people know." This "old alphabet " is a two-handed An1erica11 ma11ttal alphabe t. The most common form of· American fingerspelling is single -ha.nded. -

International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ) 13th Annual Conference Advances in the Science and Application of Animal Training 6th October 2004 Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Glasgow, UK Satellite meeting to IAHAIO 2004 Picture in here In conjunction with the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare Science in the Service of Animal Welfare WELCOME TO GLASGOW Training has long been recognised as an important component in the successful adaptation of companion animals, their inclusion in sporting events and other recreational activities. An extensive folk literature exists relating to the training of these animals. Knowledge and practice based upon scientific principles, such as classical conditioning and instrumental learning may also be employed. Less recognised is the contribution relevant training can have on the management and husbandry of other animals eg. on farms, in zoos and the laboratory. This meeting aims to discuss recent developments in learning theory and related fields, in the methodologies and techniques of training. It will also consider the application of these for practical training of animals. It seeks to bring together veterinarians, animal scientists, ethologists, psychologists, animal trainers and others who work with animals to share knowledge and good practice. It hopes to encourage a wider consideration of the ways training can be used to improve the husbandry, management and welfare of animals. ISAZ 2004 is a satellite meeting to the 2004 world conference of the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organisations and we are grateful to IAHAIO for their support of the meeting. We are also grateful for the kind support of the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare in the organisation of the meeting and their help in compiling the programme and preparation of the abstract booklets.
