Original Research A CHECKLIST OF THE NON -A C A RINE A R A CHNIDS (CHELICER A T A : AR A CHNID A ) OF THE DE HOOP NA TURE RESERVE , WESTERN CA PE PROVINCE , SOUTH AFRIC A Authors: ABSTRACT Charles R. Haddad1 As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA) in conserved areas, arachnids Ansie S. Dippenaar- were collected in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The Schoeman2 survey was carried out between 1999 and 2007, and consisted of five intensive surveys between Affiliations: two and 12 days in duration. Arachnids were sampled in five broad habitat types, namely fynbos, 1Department of Zoology & wetlands, i.e. De Hoop Vlei, Eucalyptus plantations at Potberg and Cupido’s Kraal, coastal dunes Entomology University of near Koppie Alleen and the intertidal zone at Koppie Alleen. A total of 274 species representing the Free State, five orders, 65 families and 191 determined genera were collected, of which spiders (Araneae) South Africa were the dominant taxon (252 spp., 174 genera, 53 families). The most species rich families collected were the Salticidae (32 spp.), Thomisidae (26 spp.), Gnaphosidae (21 spp.), Araneidae (18 2 Biosystematics: spp.), Theridiidae (16 spp.) and Corinnidae (15 spp.). Aculeate Conservation Group/ Hymettus Report for 2006 1. Background to 2006 Research. 1.1 During 2006 a new body, Hymettus Ltd., was constituted. Hymettus will take over and extend the role of the Aculeate Conservation Group. This report deals with research originally agreed at the 2005 ACG Annual Review and funded by English Nature (now also re-incarnated as Natural England), but executed under Hymettus Ltd.. During 2006 work was financially supported by English Nature, Earthwatch, Syngenta and the RSPB in accordance with the relevant Annex a documents, which see for details. 1.2 2005 Projects are reported in the following order of taxonomic group: ants, wasps, bees, other projects. 2. Ant Projects. 2.1 Formica exsecta 2.1.1 At the 2005 Review meeting Stephen Caroll was asked to enquire of the Devon Trust as to whether they would be prepared to consider looking at the possibility of proposing a landscape project for the Bovey Basin which would include the habitat requirements of Formica exsecta and , if so, whether a contribution from the ACG towards the costs of looking at this would be appropriate. 2.1.2 The Trust received this request enthusiastically and have submitted a copy of Andrew Taylor’s (their Officer) Report. It was found in the Karkonosze National Park, in a wet habitat. Some taxonomic comments are included in the paper. Key words: Maro sublestus, new record, taxonomy, Poland Introduction The taxonomic position of the genus Maro has not been established for a long time. Saaristo (1971) in a review paper on the genus M aro concluded that this genus is closely related to the genera Agyneta, Microneta and Centromerus in conformity with the opinions expressed by Parker & Duffey (1963). Moreover, the genera Maro and Oreonetides are regarded as relicts of mixed Arcto-Tertiary forests (Eskov 1991). At present 12 species of the genus M aro are known. Their occurrence is limited to the northern hemisphere. The majority of species (10) occur in Europe and Asia, while M aro ampins Dondale et Buckle, 2001 and Maro nearcticus Dondale et Buckle, 2001 occur in the New World, in the USA and Canada. The species known from Europe include: Maro lehtineni Saaristo, 1971, Maro lepidus Casemir, 1961, Maro minutus O.P.- Cambridge, 1906 and M aro sublestus Falconer, 1915. -

A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

Mercado2, Jorge A. Santiago-Blay3, and Michael D. Webb4 Abstract: We review the West Indian species of Arachnocoris, a genus of spider-web dwelling kleptoparasitic nabids. We recognize five species: A. berytoides Uhler from Grenada, A. darlingtoni n. sp. from Hispaniola, A. karukerae Lopez-Moncet from Guadeloupe, A. portoricensis n. sp. from Puerto Rico, and A. trinitatis Bergroth from Trinidad. West Indian Arachnocoris antennal and profemoral color banding patterns are useful diagnostic characters and may have evolved to mimic their spider hosts, which are often island endemic spiders in the family Pholcidae. We provide a simplified and illustrated key to the species based on external characters. A catalog for the 16 recognized species of Arachnocoris is presented. Keywords: Hemiptera, Nabidae, Arachnocoris, new species, Neotropical, West Indies Introduction The Nabidae are a relatively small family in the insect order Hemiptera with approximately 20-30 genera and 400-500 described species (Henry 2009, Faúndez and Carvajal 2014). All described species are terrestrial predators. Some species are considered beneficial to humans as these help control populations of agricultural pests. Several species of Nabis have been reported as biting humans (Faúndez 2015). Within the Nabidae Arachnocoris is one of two genera in the tribe Arachnocorini. The arachnophilic genus5 Arachnocoris Scott is a small and little-known group of specialized kleptoparasitic nabids that spend their life- stages living in a relatively treacherous habitat, namely a spider’s web, particularly non-sticky portions of it (Henry 1999; Mercado-Santiago-Blay 2015; Figure 1, this paper). -

This was studied from September 2015 to July 2019. A total of 18 family, 52 genus and 80 species were recorded. Araneidae is the most dominant family among all followed by the silicide family. The main aim of this study is to bring to known the species which is generally observed by the humans in this area. Beside seasonal variation in species is higher in summer season as compared to winter. Also many species were observed each year in same season repeatedly during the study period, further maximum number of species is seen in vegetation type of habitat. They may be found at varied locations, such as under bark, beneath stones, below the fallen logs, among foliage, [23] house dwellings, grass, leaves, underground, burrows etc. (Pai IK., 2018) . Their success is reflected by the fact that, on our planet, there are about 48,358 species recorded till now according to World Spider Catalog.
