The Redvers Winterfest committee held their Winterfest on Saturday, December 14th. They had so many activities planned for the day, there was no shortage of things to do for all ages. The day kicked off with a pancake breakfast, there was a craft and trade show, a rice krispie sculpture display, curling, Santa photos, bouncy castles, a town wide scavenger hunt, Christmas ornament crafts, an adult paint class, sleigh rides, movie matinee just to name a few of the activities throughout the day and finished off with a Santa Parade. Check out page 7 to see more Winterfest photos. Thank you to Christina Birch for submitting all photos for Winterfest! The WBL Ladies Tournament hosted by the Drive for Lives Committee was a ladies’ day out to enjoy camaraderie of good friends and sharing laughs on a spectacular golf course while supporting a life-saving organization. On July 19th, White Bear Lake Golf Course once again was bombarded with fun-loving women at the annual Drive for Lives Ladies Golf Tournament. Formerly known as the Shoot for STARs Tournament, this charity tournament is once again focusing on raising funds for an essential service, with this year’s recipient being Red Coat Mutual Aid. Pictured above receiving the proceeds from the White Bear Lake Red Coat Mutual Aid (RCMA) works in conjunction with Ladies Tournament from Left to Right: Back Row: Chairman of the the Redvers and Carlyle Fire Departments, and the 12 Redcoat Mutual Aid Committee Rick Patron, Redvers Deputy Fire participating (RM of , RM of Chief Wes Malin. Redvers, Village of Kenosee Lake, Village of , Photo/Submitted Village of Manor and the Village of Storthoaks). The Red Coat Mutual Aid service area covers over 2,400 kms² throughout the Southeast corner. When every second counts, Red Coat Mutual Aid is often the first to arrive at the accident scenes with lifesaving rescue equipment such as the JAWS of life, vehicle stabilizers and defibrillators. They partake in fire, water, ice, skidoo, grain bin, and heavy equipment rescues as wellas establishing safe landings for the STARs Air Ambulance.

On June 20th, Colleen Brown and Jacky Lothian, tournament organizers, were invited to an informative tour of the equipment and vehicles used in RCMA rescues. Rob Klassen, Deputy Fire Chief with the Carlyle Fire Department, who has been with the department for 19 years explained that the Carlyle Fire Department presently have 23 members with 15 active members who undertake ongoing specialized training. The purchasing of reliable and effective equipment is also ongoing, with their next purchase being stabilization struts for large vehicle rescues like buses and semis. As Travis Van Meer, Deputy Chief with the Carlyle Fire Department explained “While we ensure we have enough people trained in various rescues and own the essential life- saving equipment, we hope not to use this equipment as often as we do”.

Brad Hutton, Fire Chief with the Redvers Fire Department, who has been with the department for 21 years explained that the Redvers Fire Department presently has 22 members who actively participate in volunteering their time for an essential service to this area and the surrounding community. Some of the Redvers Fire Department Members have volunteered their time to participate in Presentations and Educational Programs on Distracted and Impaired Driving as well as Fire Safety for the students in various schools and Daycares within the area. These active Fire Department members have also undertaken specialized training in high angle rescue, heavy equipment rescue, grain bin rescue and Ice/Water Rescue. Thanks to the Red Coat Mutual Aid participating Municipalities, in 2020, both fire departments will be expanding their training in Rope Rescue, Vehicle Extrication Level 1 and Advanced Vehicle Extrication techniques and concepts.

This is the ladies tournament’s 7th year and its continued success is due to the incredible generosity of sponsors, the keen golfers, the wonderful volunteers and the excellent service provided by the personnel at the Bear Claw Casino and the White Bear Lake Golf Course. In hosting the event the Drive for Lives Committee raised $16,000.00 to give to the Red Coat Mutual Aid Committee in order to purchase much needed rescue equipment and ensure our fire fighters are properly trained in the event of an emergency.

Colleen Brown commented on what a privilege it is to organize this golf event. “This tournament emphasizes the enjoyment of spending time with friends outside in the fresh air while supporting the community at the same time. As we are hours away from a fully equipped hospital, there is an imperative need for Red Coat Mutual Aid”.

Once again, the Drive for Lives Committee is working hard to ensure that the WBL Ladies Golf Tournament can continue to be a success in helping out the Redcoat Mutual Aid and future recipients, they invite anyone that is interested in sponsoring the event to contact them. Monetary donations, gift certificates and prize donations are welcomed. Monetary donations can be made out to WBL Ladies Tournament and sent to Colleen Brown General Delivery, Manor, SK. S0C 1R0. Please feel free to contact any of the following committee members for additional information regarding the event:

I’m having a hard time getting my head around this but it’s been twenty years since the Y2 virus was supposed to get us.

And, when we safely made it through that, the Mayan 2012 curse was waiting in the wings to predict the end of life as we know it. The first threat was a modern, high tech whoopsie concerning how humans measure their time and how those measurements are shown in printed form. Come to think of it, that was the root cause of the Mayan problem as well. Maybe we should just chill out with the clocks and calendars and enjoy each day, one day at a time.

Personally I am thinking of the potential that this New Year holds. I was gifted a small greenhouse last year but too late for a vital step in its usefulness. I hadn’t had any dreaming time. Anticipation being the biggest part of gardening (well besides the weeding part, that is), I needed a few months of thinking about which plants I could try since I could now extend my season. I’ve had this all important time this year: I have plans.

As well, I have plans to give my kitchen a face lift. I’m not the wife who wants to retire and build a mansion in town. I’m not even the woman who wants to spend a bundle on a complete remodel of this all important workspace in my house. I’m just the gal who thinks a little spruce up would be nice and it looks like it’s going to happen in the New Year.

And although I really do believe that a calendar shouldn’t rule our lives (can you tell I’m retired?) it is good to see a few dates being jotted down on our 2020 pages. Things like a camping family reunion and planning the Redvers Day celebration. There is even talk of a holiday trip somewhere south with some of my favourite people to escape the winter for a little while; definitely something to look forward to!

No matter what, though it’s always exciting to begin a brand new year. Whether your focus is full of positive resolutions for the future, relief at leaving a particularly bad year behind you or just the ancient pagan in you appreciating that the days have already begun to stretch out, it just feels good to turn our faces to the future and welcome a fresh start.

COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMMING Submitted by Marsha Goforth

You may have heard us talk about something called “Community-based Programming” over the past couple of years. Exactly what is “Community -based Programming”? As of April 1st, 2018, Community Living Services Delivery (the branch of The Ministry of Social Services that funds the Redvers Activity Centre) mandated that anyone who attends a Day Program has to be involved within their community 51% or more of the time they are at the Day Program. The rationale behind this was to stop Day Programs from becoming segregated spaces for people with disabilities. What does “Community-based Programming” look like? It looks like the people we support being included in their community just as any other community member would be. It looks like people with disabilities volunteering to fold and distribute the Covering the Corner newsletter. It looks like people with disabilities being engaged in the programming the library does for the community. It looks like people with disabilities accessing community services just as everyone else does within this and surrounding communities. It’s another step towards inclusion of people with disabilities. LOGAN ROSE EMERIC JEROME PATRON ARTHUR POIRIER

November’s ‘Give back with back packs” project was completed early December . A total of 6 back packs for children ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 6 were packed and delivered to Carlyle school. Besides completed back packs an assortment of useful school articles were also delivered to be used at the teacher’s discretion. The Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon was also the recipient of funds to purchase teddy bears from the residents as well as many of the staff of RHC.

Santa and elf Kayla made an early visit to the RHC residents and brought presents for all – the grins and laughter proof that one is never too old for Santa Clause.

December 18th residents and their family were treated to the musical stylings of the Curtis and Bonnie Sazcash along with daughter Sonnie and son Davidson from , Sk. Along with the music all seemed to enjoy the decadent desserts offered for their afternoon pleasure. I failed to get the picture but Jackie Simins was the lucky winner of the LED Christmas Kids Raffle. She won two but in true Christmas Spirit donated one back for a second drawing. Margaret Nelson’s great granddaughter was the lucky winner. We have entered the 2nd decade of the 21st century. We will all be able to throw our glasses away now that we will be seeing 2020. At writing our line up of entertainers is not complete but we know we have Keith Olsen coming January 7 and Phil Wilk on the 15th. We are working to have the Lyon’s Country Band from Manitoba treat us to their harmonies in late January.

Musical entertainment is the universal attraction for the residents here at the Haven. Everyone enjoys music & we encourage the public to take in our entertainment as well. We also very much appreciate your help with covering the cost of same be it silver collection or donations - big or small.

A REMINDER: the activity room and or family conference rooms are available anytime for a family or families to come together with their resident friend/family member and enjoy a private time with them. We encourage you to use our activity room after 5 p.m. any day.

Haven Activity Department and the residents and staff of Redvers Health Centre wish you a very Happy New Year!

KEEPING UP WITH REDVERS SCHOOL Submitted by Redvers School Newspaper Committee

November and December have been crazy busy for all of us at Redvers School! In November we were very happy to host a Remembrance Day service in our school gym. We would like to thank Mr. Birch for being our Master of Ceremonies along with Mrs. Sanborn and Mrs. Garnier for planning an excellent event. We would also like to give a shout out to the members of the legion, cadets, the community choir and all students and staff that attended and preformed songs, poems and tributes to help us honor our veterans and those still serving today. Our team at leadership would also like to thank Mrs. Delmaire for making an honorary display in our school each year reminding students that people we know and even our late relatives played a part in fighting for the freedom we experience every day.

December was a busy month for our leadership team as we were planning many fun activities and spirit days for the student body. We celebrated national sock day on the fourth and that was just the start to all the fun we had! Throughout the month, staff and students in the elementary end were practicing and getting prepared for their awesome Christmas Concert! Everyone enjoyed getting prepared and would like to thank their teachers, especially Mrs. Dyck for helping them prepare their performances. In the high school end, the leadership team was working hard to get everything ready for our annual Christmas banquet. The students all had fun and especially enjoyed the scavenger hunt our team was able to put together.

As volleyball season has ended, our gym will not catch a break as basketball and drama will be starting up. Our drama club is already starting to prepare their play in anticipation for the Regional Drama Festival we are so lucky to have the opportunity to host in April. We are also happy to announce that curling season is under way and we are hoping to have couple teams within the high school. Kudos to the curling club for having a youth curling program encouraging youth to try out a new sport!

We would also like to let everyone know about our Facebook and Instagram pages. You can find us on those apps @redvers.school on Instagram and at Redvers school official page on Facebook. We use these accounts to keep everyone up to date on happenings at Redvers School whether it be date changes or even cancellations of events so check back to stay informed. Classes begin on January 6th so hopefully everyone is refreshed and ready for exams which are right around the corner. We hope you had a safe and happy holiday season!
