F. Davie Queensland Museum, PO Box 3300, South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. – An annotated checklist of the extant brachyuran crabs of the world is presented for the first time. Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. • 17 the Crabs Belonging to the Grapsoidea Include a Lot Of
17 SUPERFAMILY GRAPSOIDEA The crabs belonging to the Grapsoidea include a lot of ubiquitous species collected in the mangrove and/or along the coastline. As a result, most of the species listed here under the ‘Coastal Rock-rubble’ biotope of table 2b could be reasonably listed also with marine species. This is particularly true for the Grapsidae: Grapsus, Pachygrapsus, Pseudograpsus, and Thalassograpsus. FAMILY GECARCINIDAE Cardisoma carnifex (Herbst, 1796). Figure 12. – Cardisoma carnifex - Guinot, 1967: 289 (Checklist of WIO species, with mention of Grande Comore and Mayotte). - Bouchard, 2009: 6, 8, Mayotte, Malamani mangrove, 16 April 2008, St. 1, 12°55.337 S, 44°09.263 E, upper mangrove in shaded area, burrow, about 1.5 m depth, 1 male 61×74 mm (MNHN B32409). - KUW fieldwork November 2009, St. 6, Petite Terre, Badamiers spillway, upper littoral, 1 female 53×64 mm (MNHN B32410), 1 male 65×75.5 mm (MNHN B32411); St. 29, Ngouja hotel, Mboianatsa beach, in situ photographs only. Distribution. – Widespread in the IWP. Red Sea, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Europa, Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles, Réunion, Mauritius, India, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, New Caledonia, Fiji, Wallis & Futuna, French Polynesia. Comment. – Gecarcinid land crabs are of large size and eaten in some places (West Indies, Wallis & Futuna, and French Polynesia). In Mayotte, however, they are not much prized for food and are not eaten. Figure 12. Cardisoma carnifex. • Are the Oxyrhyncha a Natural Group?
THALASSIA JUGOSLAVICA 17 (1) 1-16 (1981) 1 Review Paper Are the Oxyrhyncha a natural group? Z. $tevcic and R. H. Gore Center for Marine Research Rovinj, »Ruder Boskovic« Institute, 52210 Rovinj, Yugoslavia, and Smithsonian Institl/tion, Fort Pierce Bureau, Fort Pierce, Fl. 33450, U.S.A. Received August 7, 1981 The Oxyrhyncha (Crustacea Decapoda Brachyura) was estab lished by Latreille 1803 and considered until now as a natural group (taxon) by the majority of carcinologists. However, the number of families composing this group varied during this pe riod of time. According to present comprehension the Oxyrhyncha embrace the families Majidae, Parthenopidae, Hymenosomatidae, and perhaps also the newly described family Mimilambridae. A critical re·examination of morphological similarities shows that the previously held characters-in·common are not numerous, being more the consequence of convergent evolution than of common origin. Differences exist in a majority of features, especially in developmental and ecological ones. Therefore, the Oxyrhyncha have to be abandoned as a taxon and consequently families men tioned above should change their systematic status and position in the system of the brachyuran crabs. INTRODUCTION Brachyuran crabs in the section Oxyrhyncha have long been considered as a natural group by various carcinologists, and one in which the members ar..'! easily assignable to one of the three families, Majidae, Parthenopidae, or Hymenosomatidae, based on general morphological appearances. A forth fami ly, Mimilambridae, recently established by Williams1 for an unusual partheno pid-like crab from the lower eastern Caribbean Sea, also appears to have affini ties to the Oxyrhyncha_ The general morphological characters that typify oxyr hynchous crabs were perhaps best summarized in a key provided by Rathbun2 in which the couplet leading to Oxyrhyncha states that the forepart of the body is narrow, usually forming a distinct rostrum, the body is more or less triangular, and the orbits are generally incomplete.

  • Larval Morphology of the Family Parthenopidae, with the Description
Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2015, 95(3), 513–521. # Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2014 doi:10.1017/S0025315414001908 Larval morphology of the family Parthenopidae, with the description of the megalopa stage of Derilambrus angulifrons (Latreille, 1825) (Decapoda: Brachyura), identified by DNA barcode elena marco-herrero1, j. ignacio gonza’ lez-gordillo2 and jose’ a. cuesta1 1Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucı´a, CSIC. There are only two complete larval developments reared in the laboratory and some larval stages described for seven species. In the present work these data are compared and analysed. A summary is made of the larval features that characterize parthenopids that can be used to distinguish them from other brachyuran larvae. In addition, the megalopa stage of Derilambrus angulifrons and Parthenopoides massena was collected from plankton and identified by DNA barcodes. The morphology of the megalopa of D. angulifrons is described for the first time, and that of P. massena is compared with a pre- vious description. Keywords: larval morphology, megalopa, DNA barcode, Parthenopidae, Derilambrus angulifrons, Parthenopoides massena, brachyura, Decapoda, plankton, crabs Submitted 16 December 2013; accepted 7 August 2014; first published online 15 December 2014 INTRODUCTION Bourdillon-Casanova (1960) and Heegaard (1963) reported the first zoeal stage of Parthenopoides massena (as Lambrus The family Parthenopidae MacLeay, 1838 is currently divided massena).
