Honolulu Advertiser & Star-Bulletin Obituaries January 1 - December 31, 1995 M Paul Lawrence Madison Jr. , a jazz tenor saxophonist who played with such greats as Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, died Jan. 22, 1995 at his Wahiawa home. He was 64. Madison was born Nov. 11, 1930 in Hutchinson, KA. His father was a musician and he received his first saxophone – a toy one – at age 3. Two years later he got a real one. By the time he was 15, Madison was heading up his own band. Among his musical associates were some of the greatest names in jazz. They included bassist Charles Mingus, Nat King Cole, guitarist Joe Comfort and pianist Art Tatum. “And of course Charlie Parker was his mentor,” said Madison’s wife, Classie. “He sort of sat at his knee and learned from him.” “From Gillespie, she said, Madison learned more than just blow.” He had a feel for quality and that’s what he tried to do in his music.Madison came to Hawaii in 1963 with a band, Classie said, and “stayed because he met me.” She was living in Haleiwa she said and was introduced to Madison by a close friend. They married on Jan. 19, 1965 and celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary a few days before Madison’s death. In Hawaii, Madison started a roofing business, but he condinued playing as often as possible. He played with the Doug McDonald Trio at the Ilikai Hotel and various other hotels, clubs and restaurants, including the Sheraton Waikiki’s Hanohano room. He once recorded a cassette with McDonald. He also often played with the late Trummy Young, a trombonist who played with Louis Armstrong before moving to Hawaii. Madison also gigged aboard the cruise ships Independence and Constitution. His last employer was Paradise Cruise; he played aboard the dinner cruise ship Star of Honolulu. Madison was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and also a former member of the Musician’s Association of Hawaii, Local 677, A.F. and M. He is survived by his wife, Classie M; daughters Marshalistic Stone, Charmayne Hollins, Paulette Allen, Covina Rhodes, all of California, and Heidi J.; mother, Bernice Marie of California; two brothers, Robert of California and Donald Dean, of Texas; aunt, Lena Derrick of California; 29 grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. [Adv Jan. 27, 1995] Benedicto Raguindin Madrid, 36, of Honolulu, died Jan. 18, 1995 at St. Francis Medical Center. He was born Sep. 13, 1958 in Cagayungan, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines. Survived by wife, Mila D.; son, Edgar; daughter, Michelle; brothers, Marlon (Frances) and Mario; sisters, Cecil and Carmen Madrid, and Macrina Quilana; parents, Ceferino and Teodocia Madrid. He was born Dec. 4, 1909 in Bangar La Union, the Philippines and was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. James Mission. Survived by wife, Victoria; son, Michael of Kauai; daughter, Theresa (Dennis) Wolfe; brother, Aloncio S. of the Philippines; three grandchildren. Burial: Mililani Memorial Park. He was a retired Lihue Sugar Co. accountant, former member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and member of Disabled American Veterans. Survived by wife, Alice F.; son, Harvey K.; daughter Vicki Ito of Waipahu; four grandchildren; brother Kanji of Oregon; and sisters, Shizuko Oumi, Sueno Nakamura of Kapaa, Mildred Hata of Honolulu and Yaeko Hironaka of Las Vegas. He was born April 9, 1933 in Honolulu, was a retired Anesthesiologist, and member of the American Socity of Anesthesiologists. Survived by brothers, Paul M., Chris A.; sisters, Florence K., Mrs. Robert T. (Carol S.) Muramoto and Mrs. Ronald N. (Amy M.) Nakayama. She was born May 14, 1936 in Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines. He was born in Seoul, Korea. Survived by son, Joel S.W.; daughter, Jenny; sisters, Martha Ishikawa, June Kim, Shirley Shimogawa and Florence V. Norman. [Adv Jan. 8, 1995] James “Jim” Leo Marchetti, 46, of Honokaa, Hawaii, died Feb. 13, 1995. He was born in MA and was owner of Honokaa Pizza and Sub. Survived by mother, Mary; sister, Marie Munro of NH; a niece and a nephew. [Adv Feb. 7, 1995] Fillipo Marignoli, Marchese de Montecorona, of Spoleto and Rome, Italy, died Jan. 22, 1995 in Seattle. He was 68. In 1954, Marignoli married Esther Kapiolani Kawananakoa, a descendant of King Kaumualii of Kauai and a great-granddaughter of of Prince David Kawananakoa. Marignoli and Kapiolani met in Florence, Italy, where she was living with her parents. In 1959, the couple and two daughters boarded the Orient and Pacific Lines ship Orcades in Naples, for an extended visit in Hawaii. They arrived in November of that year. In 1961, Marignoli, an abstract painter, exhibited some of his works at the Hawaiian Village Hotel. “Hawaii is good for holidays, but not so good for a painter,” he said in an interview.
