Katsuro Miho, 82, of Honolulu, died Jan. 18, 1995. He was born in Wailuku, was a retired attorney who worked hard to get Asian- Americans accepted as equals and to win statehood for Hawaii, past president of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and the Urasenke Tea Society, and former vice-chairman of the Statehood Commission. Miho was born in Wailuku, Maui. In 1928 when Hawaii was still a U.S. Territory and Miho was 15, he won an inter- island model airplane building contest with his entry: a 40-inch monoplane powered by a rubber-band motor that flew for 40 minutes. Miho’s prize was a trip to Detroit where he was to participate in the national airplane model building contest. But he and his parents learned that they would have to shut down their Kahului general store and hotel for a day to prove to immigration officials in Honolulu that Miho was an American citizen. And they learned it wasn’t enough to present a birth certificate. Because they were Japanese-Americans, they had to produce childhood photographs, old school records, passports and proof that Miho was born in Hawaii The requirements were mandated by the 1924 Oriental Exclusion Act, intended to keep Asians out of America. Miho passed the muster, and the teen went to Detroit. He returned to continue his studies at Maui High School where he was a member of the championship debating team. After graduating from high school, Miho attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, then studied law at George Washington University’s law school in Washington, D.C. During his college years Miho earned most of his tuition and living expenses by working as a typewriter repariman. “I became quite a character in Washington”, he once recalled. “My boss used to advertise me as the only Japanese repairman in America.” In 1938, Miho returned to Hawaii with a law degree. In 1940, as tensions between the and the of Japan threatened to erupt into war – as they did a year later, when Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor – Miho gave a speech to a club of Japanese-American alumni of the University of Hawaii.. “It is unfortunate, yet natural, that Americans of Japanes ancestry are in some measure, the scapegoats in the present crisis,” he said. “However, this situation must not blind us from seeing the true light of Americanism.” The day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Miho’s father, Katsuichi, was forced at bayonet point from his Kahului home. Still a Japanese citizen (U.S. law barred the naturalization of Asians), he spent the rest of the war in internment camps on the mainland. Three of his four Hawaii born sons, including Katsuro Miho, promptly volunteered for military service. Two served with the famed 442 Regimental Combat Team (one of them died in a highway accident during training exercises at Camp Shelby, Miss.) Miho however, failed the U.S. Army’s physical. He spent the war years performing community service and worked with his law partner, later to become U.S. Sen. Hiram Fong, to repeal immigration laws designed to exclude Asians. Miho was a partner in Fong Miho Choy & Robinson. In 1985, Miho’s efforts were recognized when the awarded him the Third- Class of the Sacred Treasurer during ceremonies commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. Miho worked tirelessly to get Hawaii admitted as a state, serving as Vice Chairman of the Hawaii Statehood Commission. He was also former president of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Friends of the East-West Center. urvived by wife, Jayne F.; sons, Jon T. and David R.; three grandchildren; brother, Katsugo; and sisters, Tsukie Fujimori and Fumie Miho.
