The administrative center of the 27 islands that comprise Naoshima Town, it is 13 km north of Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture and 3 km south of Tamano in Okayama Prefecture. According to oral tradition, the island‟s name was bestowed upon it by retired Emperor Sutoku. Defeated in a brief civil war in 1156, Sutoku was banished to Sanuki province (present day Kagawa). When he visited the island, he was impressed by the islanders‟ simple purity andrenamed itNaoshima, meaning “gentle-natured island”.The sea near Naoshima has long been an important marine route. In the 16th and 17th century, Naoshima‟s ruling Takahara Clan led a formidable sea fleet and in the 19th century many islanders became involved in the shipping industry. Ningyojorurui, a Japanese form of puppetry, thrived in the 19th century, and is still carried on by an all-female troupe. The local economy is sustained by fish (particularly yellow tail) and seaweed farming, as well
