From 29th June until 21st July, France once again lived in a bubble. And the whole world watched as Chris Froome won the stages to Ax 3 Domaines, Mont Ventoux and the individual time trial in Chorges, then defended his yellow jersey all the way to the finish in Paris. This year has already seen the British rider win two big stage races, the Tour de Romandie in Switzerland and the Critérium du Dau- phiné in France. His impressive athletic performance over the Tour’s 3,400 kilometre (2,110 mile) route in July saw him win his first Tour de France ahead of Colombia’s Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas and Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver of Spain. To celebrate the 100th edition of the Tour de France, this year’s Grande Boucle started with three stages in Corsica – the first time the Tour has ever visited the Mediterranean island. In another bold step, the race didn’t start with its normal prologue this year.

  • Qhubeka and RCS Sport Handover 58 Buffalo Bicycles
Qhubeka and RCS Sport handover 58 Buffalo Bicycles Johannesburg, 15 November 2013 – 15 November 2013 was a day of celebration in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, as community members gathered for the handover of 120 Qhubeka Buffalo Bicycles that were distributed to schoolchildren who are part of the Qhubeka Bicycle Education Empowerment Programme (BEEP). Fifty-eight of these sturdy steel-framed bicycles were provided by RCS Sport, organisers of the famed Giro d’Italia cycling race. RCS Sport raised the funds through a pre-race gala dinner held at the Milano Sanremo (MSR) cycling classic in Italy earlier this year, choosing Qhubeka as the beneficiary. The MSR race is organised by RCS Sport and is the longest cycling classic in the world and the biggest one-day race in Italy. It also turned out to be one of the highlights of the 2013 cycling season for Team MTN-Qhubeka powered by Samsung, the team that races to build exposure for Qhubeka’s rural initiatives and rides to inspire potential new athletes within the community of Qhubeka bicycle recipients. As Africa’s first ever UCI registered Professional Continental cycling team, Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung were the new kids on the block at the MSR and shocked the world as Gerald Ciolek edged out race favourite Peter Sagan in terrible weather conditions to claim the win. “The Milano Sanremo race is etched in my mind as a defining moment in Africa’s cycling journey,” says Qhubeka director Anthony Fitzhenry. “It was a day of proving to the world that Africa has the cycling talent to compete at the highest levels of the sport.

NextGen Men’s Track Endurance & Road U23 & U19 By Ian Melvin (Track) & Luc Arseneau (Road) EFFECTIVE Jan. 1, 2015 Note: It is to be noted that elements mentioned in this program may change throughout the season due to funding restrictions, race cancellations or other elements that may not be controlled by Cycling Canada. In the case where there are changes to the program Cycling Canada will endeavor to notify all affected persons in a timely manner. CYCLING CANADA NextGen Men’s Endurance (U23 & U19) 1. THE PROGRAM Our vision… To create a World Class Men’s Track Endurance program that will be medal competitive by Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Underpinning this vision will be a committed U23 endurance program for emerging talent supported by world class infrastructure and ambitions creating a long-term career pathway towards World Tour professional status. It is well documented that track cycling is a leader in youth development and a long term career pathway towards professional road status. Many nations have proven this over the years and continue to do so today; e.g. GBR, AUS, DEN, NZL, SUI, etc. Canada, with the opening of the Mattamy Homes Cycling Center, built for the 2015 Pan- American Games, now has the crucial tool to allow us to follow in these footsteps. A World Class Team Pursuit program relies on the identification of young emerging talent with appropriate physiology and skill sets. These riders will have to commit to a year-round training and international racing program leading up to the ultimate goal: a world class performance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

  • Anti-Doping Cheating? the Manufacture of Truth in the War Against Drugs in Sport
Anti-doping cheating? The manufacture of truth in the war against drugs in sport Bernat López Senior lecturer, Department of Communication Studies Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) “Among the calamities of war may be jointly numbered the diminution of the love of truth, by the falsehoods which interest dictates and credulity encourages”. Samuel Johnson in The Idler n. 30, 11 November 1758, quoted in Knowles, 1999: 409. Introduction 1 The Danish sports scholar Verner Møller has labelled the anti-doping campaign “a crusade that must not fail” (2010: 72), one in which seemingly “the ends justifies the means” (2010: 77). He advances the hypothesis that the officials who are leading it might be regarding “the fight against doping as a war in which a form of emergency situation prevails” (2010: 84). This is not certainly an improbable stance, as one of the favourite metaphors of the anti-doping campaigners themselves is the one which compares or equates their efforts to eradicate doping with a war –one which must be won at any cost because if not, “then sport –to use the dominant discourse of the area- will be at the mercy of the needle” (2010: 73). It could actually be argued that nobody launches a war thinking that it might be lost –victory is the only plausible outcome for warriors of any sort and place when entering the battleground. In such an ordeal, as Møller points out, very often exception becomes the norm and the ends justify the means. The value of empirical evidence, historical rigour and honest research, for instance, might be easily overthrown for the sake of the cause.
