THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES The Faculty of International Business and Economics The Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication of ASE Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj- Napoca 7th International Conference: Synergies in Communication Bucharest, Romania, 22 - 23 November 2018 BEHIND THE SCREENS: A STUDY OF THE FILMS OF THREE INDIAN WOMEN DIRECTORS Minouti NAIK1 Abstract Indian films, even after 76 years of independence and 105 years of Indian Cinema, are a predominantly male domain. The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society. Keywords: Indian cinema, women, themes, characters, uniqueness 1. Introduction Men have sight, women insight. - Victor Hugo Victor Hugo‟s observation, penned down in his memoirs, might be an apt point to begin with, when one reflects upon films made by Indian women filmmakers. Despite films forming a very important facet of the Indian society and the fact that India completed 105 years of cinema, this year, the number of women making films in India is very small. -

This report is available on the World Wide Web at https://escholarship.org/uc/item/75j1b2cg. 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The Indian film industry releases the largest number of movies in the world, 1500-2000 movies in Hindi and other regional languages, which are watched by more than 2 billion Indian moviegoers and millions more worldwide. • The tobacco industry has been using movies to promote their products for over a century. • In India, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and Cable Television Networks Amendment Act, 1994, nominally provide for regulation of tobacco imagery in film and TV, but the Ministry of Information and Broadcast (MoIB), the nodal ministry, has not considered tobacco imagery. • The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COPTA), enforced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), prohibited direct and indirect advertisement of tobacco products. -

October-December 2012 JOURNAL OF EURASIAN STUDIES Volume IV., Issue 4. _____________________________________________________________________________________ PLÁJÁS, Ildikó Zonga Curved Reflexion — a Five-Day Experience of Cinematic Art from India — Indian Film Festival The Hague 2012 – 2nd edition Ladies of Miss India 2012 welcomed us as we entered the reception of the 2nd edition of Indian Film Festival The Hague. Model cut girls in pseudo Indian clothes with sparkling details, pinkish and artificial inserts, and gimmicky smiles yet with an air of melodramatic seriousness. Films and festival, content and appearance shared the same ambivalence; the sometimes astonishing sometimes charming opposites which otherwise characterizes the whole Indian society and culture. As the main page of the festivals' website appropriately states: 'The Indian Film Festival The Hague will take you on an unforgettable journey to India, an overwhelming country filled with contrast. The festival explores the changing identity of India through the eyes of film makers. [...] Five days of cinema, five days of eclectic and exciting programming, five days of mesmerizing India for all ages and all kinds. Whether you’re a lover of art or a lover of nightlife the IndianFFTH has something for you.' The festival took place between 3-7 October 2012 and during the 5 days of rich programming a total of 27 films were screened, more than half being Dutch premieres. The festival this year run on more locations and a number of additional screenings and events took place. A special educational program was connected to the screening of the children film Chillar Party (d. Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl) and a special Indian Ladies Night was organized where the audience could watch the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (The lover will take the bride), a Bollywood classic from 1995. -

One of the best ways to judge the spirit of a civilization, appreciate its strength, glory and Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, recognize its weakness and limitations is to study the position and status of women in it.
