It aims to advance the prospects of Jewish communities in the United Kingdom and across Europe by conducting research and informing policy development in dialogue with those best placed to positively influence Jewish life. The Board of Deputies of British Jews is the voice of British Jewry – the only organisation based on cross-communal, democratic, grassroots representation. It is the first port of call for Government, media and others seeking to understand the Jewish community’s interests and concerns. Authors Dr Donatella Casale Mashiah is a Research Fellow at JPR. A former visiting scholar at the Quality of Government Institute in Gothenburg and at the University of Potsdam, she is a member of international research partnerships, including the European Cooperation in Science and Technology’s action on local public sector reforms and the Observatory on Local Autonomy. She holds a doctorate in business administration and management from the University of Pisa where she specialised in public policy and public and non- profit sectors management. Her research is featured in academic publications and expert listings, including the Policy Studies Yearbook issued by the American Political Science Association. Dr Jonathan Boyd is Executive Director of JPR. Entitled Magnified and Sanctified: The Music of Jewish Prayer, the conference was the first ever International Conference on Jewish Liturgical Music in the UK , which, during the week of 16-19 June 2015, attracted an international array of leading scholars and musicians from Europe, Australia, USA and Israel to share cutting-edge research on all aspects of synagogue music past and present. The stimulating and diverse program featured an array of keynote lectures, scholarly papers, panel discussions and musical performances, and was followed by the 10th Annual European Cantors Convention weekend. The conference, presented by the European Cantor’s Association and the music department of Leeds University, was one of the inaugural events in the three-year international project ‘Performing the Jewish Archive’ (2015-2018) which has seen several major conferences and festivals across the world. Spearheaded by Dr Stephen Muir, Senior Lecturer at Leeds and Conference Director, the project has given rise to revivals of and research into much music lost during the period of the Holocaust and Jewish migrations in the 20th century.

    AN ANGLO-JEWISH COMMUNITY: LEEDS' Ernest Krausz HE Leeds Jewish community is typically the product of the persecution of Russian Jewry in the latter half of the nineteenth Tcentury. By the beginning of the present century some io,000 Jews had settled in Leeds, and these immigrants gave rise to the third largest Jewish community in Britain, which at present numbers about 20,000 people.2 As the community grcw, organized Jewish life de- veloped, and the multitude of organizations that sprang up served as a most important force of social control. Much is to be gained, there- fore, from an examination of the organizational pattern and structure of the community. We may divide the organizational field into the following sectors: religious, cultural, zionist, political, economic, and charitable. Quite naturally there is much overlapping in both the membership and functions of the various organizations, but although this makes our division into definite fields rather artificial, it is nevertheless of great value in providing us with a clear picture of the organizational pattern. Before dealing with those organizations that fit into the above classification, we shall examine two organizations which aim at looking after the needs of the community as a whole, rather than with any one aspect of its life. One such organization is the LeedsJewish Representa- tive Council which is a body that links the multitude of organizations, covers the field of organizations almost in its entirety, and gives an appearance of unity to the community. From its List of Purposes we see that its main aims are: to provide a central representative body for the community; to guide and co-ordinate communal activities; to foster good relations between Jews and non-Jews; to deal with matters of Jewish interest in general; and to be a centre of information.

    European Union for Progressive Judaism February 2018 Newsletter © European Union for Progressive Judaism Spain remembers victims and salutes survivors OVIEDO, ASTURIAS. The Beit Emunah community remembered the Shoah victims in a public ceremony before the monument in Oviedo’s central park. Representatives from the government of Asturias, from the town, from the gypsy, gay and lesbian communities and from the Protestant church attended the event. Beit Emunah’s President, Aida Oceransky, welcomed the guests and explained the importance of maintaining the memory of this traumatic event. People read poetry and lit six candles to remember all victims, Jewish and non-Jewish. Chairman’s Message One of the many wonderful things about Judaism is conference this year. that we have more than one New Year.
