How great the cross! What blessing it holds! He who possesses it possesses a treasure. More noble, more precious than anything on earth, in fact and in name, it is indeed a treasure, for in and through it and for it all the riches of our salvation were stored away and restored to us.” —St. Andrew of Crete Dear friends, next Monday, September 14th, we will celebrate an important feast of our Lord: the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast puts in perspective the great mission of Christ for mankind which include; the mission of healing the wounds in our bodies (Isaiah 53:3); the ministry of healing the evil structures that undermine our freedom as children of God (John 8:32); and the mission of renewing the face of the earth as Jesus went about doing good (Acts 10:38). In this feast, we express with our prayers and thanksgiving that the glory of Christ is the cross. The cross is the glory and exaltation of Jesus because if there had been no cross, the streams of everlasting life would not have welled from his side (John 19: 34). If there had been no cross, the record of our sins would not have been cancelled (Colossians 2:14), we would not have gained freedom and we would not have enjoyed the tree of life (Revelation 22:2). If there had been no cross, the doors of paradise would not have been opened (Revelation 4:1). In our Christian life, the cross reminds us of our salvation, it makes present the price that Jesus paid for us to be saved (John 3:16). When we honor the cross; bowing before the cross, kissing the cross, praying with the cross, displaying the cross in our homes and countryside, we are at the same time saying: thank You Jesus for saving me; for dying for me. Thank You Jesus for showing us an example of true love as you said: Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends (John 15:13). At the foot of the cross we learn how to love as Jesus loved, we learn how to forgive as Jesus forgave those who offended him (Luke 23:34). On this beautiful Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, we as friends of Jesus are invited to a deeper appreciation of our call as Christians. We are invited to place our different vocations, ecclesial ministries, professional responsibilities, religious sensibilities, and social connections in the light of the cross of Christ and Christ’s self-empting love. Let us include the message of the Cross of Christ in who we are and what we do. For example, as priests, our vocation ought to include the biography of the suffering servant of God. Therefore, the cross becomes our model in becoming victims (Sacerdos Victima). If we are in the health care profession, we, like Jesus ought to be wounded healers. As parents, we ought to allow our sufferings and long hours of work to transform the destiny of our children by following in the footsteps of Jesus who endured everything for our sake. As children of God, we open our spiritual attentiveness and religious devotions to the life and example of the man of sorrows. In availing ourselves of this genuine message of the Cross, we shall be lifted up as Jesus was lifted up (John 8:28). Our world will experience a deeper healing from selfishness, hedonism, consumerism, arbitrary search for pleasure, easy-way-of-life, spirit of possession and all forms of corruption. More importantly, our own crosses, self-denials, self-empting love, and sacrifices are transformed into citadels of healing and well being for us and for others.     The Sunday of the Cross This morning we're celebrating the feast of the Elevation of the Cross. The correct date of the feast is tomorrow, September 14th. Normally we would have an Evening Divine Liturgy but since we cannot serve one this evening we would have had to serve the liturgy tomorrow morning. The Metropolitan has given the parishes permission to move the feast to today, therefore I chose to move it so that more could be part of the celebration. This feast day goes back to the finding of the True, Life-giving Cross by St. Helen the mother of St. Constantine the Great. In the year 326, She received permission and financing from her son go to Jerusalem in search for all the holy places where our Lord had been. One of the first things that she wanted to do was to find the True and Life-giving Cross. When she arrived in Jerusalem, she started making inquiries as to where it's location might be. Unfortunately, even the Bishop of Jerusalem did not know where the cross was. There was a Jew named Judah who had some documents which identified where Jesus had been crucified. He had inherited these documents from his father. They also showed where Jesus had been buried. He reluctantly gave these documents to St. Helen. Several weeks were spent excavating the site looking for the cross, but to know avail. One day St. Helen noticed a beautiful flower growing in a place by itself. It was what we refer to as sweet basil.

MARON MARONITE CATHOLIC CHURCH Feast of the Holy Cross pg. 606 September 15, 2019 In the Christian liturgical calendar, there are several different feasts known as Feast of the Cross, all of which com- memorate the cross used in the crucifixion of Jesus. While Good Friday is dedicated to the Passion of Christ and the Crucifixion, these days celebrate the cross itself, as the instrument of salvation. The feast commemorates the finding of the True Cross in 326 by Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a portion of the cross placed inside. In 614, that portion of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. The cross was returned to the church the following year after initially having been taken to Constantinople by Heraclius. The date used for the feast marks the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335. This was a two-day festival: although the actual Consecration of the church was on September 13, the cross itself was brought outside the church on September 14 so that the clergy and faithful could pray before the True Cross, and all could come forward to venerate it. Spiritually, Christians honor in a special way the Cross, which God himself made and which he chose to be the altar of his redeeming sacrifice.
