The study had aimed at exploring the relationship between the older population and television. In fact, in 2002, CFAR had conducted a detailed monitoring study entitled `Representation of Specialised Social Issues on Media’ for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. This included a segment on media and the elderly and how they were represented on TV, radio and the print media. The current study builds on that study and goes further: it has a detailed quantitative and qualitative field study of elderly viewers that provides their feedback on TV and the role it plays in their lives.     Neues Kino in Indien Vom Beginn ihrer Arbeit an haben die "Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek" dem indischen Kino besondere Aufmerksamkeit entgegengebracht. Schon auf unserer dritten Veranstaltung im Juli 1963 zeigten wir den damals in der Bundesrepublik noch unbekannten Film PATHER PANCHALI von Satyajit Ray. 1972 brachten die "Freunde" in Zusammenarbeit mit Film Niryat, Bombay, zum ersten Mal eine "Woche des jungen indischen Films" ins Arsenal-Kino nach Berlin, auf deren Programm 8 Titel standen (darunter der Film SAMSKARA sowie Werke von Sukhdev, Mrinal Sen, Girish Karnad und B.V. Karanth). Von dieser Woche her rührt auch unsere Bekanntschaft mit dem Werk von Mrinal Sen, dessen spätere Filme verschiedentlich auf dem Internationalen Forum des Jungen Films gezeigt wurden, so EK ADHURI KAHANI (Eine unvollendete Geschichte, 1973) und CHORUS (1976). Auf dem Forum liefen aber auch indi• sche Filme von Nina Shivdasani, Mani Kaul und der Yukt-Kooperative aus Bombay. Die meisten dieser Filme sind auch im Verleih der "Freunde". Daraus ergibt sich schon eine Kontinuität des Arbeitens mit indischen Fil• men. Ihre Funktion hierzulande kann als Informationsträger gesehen werden, aber auch als anregendes Moment zur Entdeckung neuer Filmformen. Die Zusammenstellung indischer Filme, die auf dem Internationalen Forum des Jungen Films 1979 gezeigt wird (sie kam durch freundliche Unterstützung des Directorate of Film Festivals in New Delhi zustande und wurde teilweise aus den Filmen ausgewählt, die im Januar 1979 auf dem Delhi-Festival liefen), reflektiert natürlich nicht die Gesamtheit des indischen Kinos. Indien ist heute bekanntlich das größte Filmland der Welt, dort werden jährlich über 6oo Spielfilme hergestellt. Die Produktion ist weitgehend kommerzialisiert und wird durch den stereotypen (aber sehr populären) Hindi-Film beherrscht.
