Tommy Eastham formerly newcomer to the business, Treadway of Treadway co-owned Legacy with Mark Racing stables, became a part of Gyarmati=s New York Toothaker and, during a seven- stable a few years ago, and the road has been a bumpy year stretch, the agency sold one. Last year was the year that nothing went wrong and hopefully things will keep going that way this year.@ Sweet Reason was given a rest after a fourth-place finish in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies, but the team wasted no time bringing up another promising youngster. Noble Moon (Malibu Moon) followed up a wire-to-wire maiden win at Belmont Sept. 14 with a third in the GII Nashua S. Nov. 3. Squeezed at the break, the colt trailed the field early, but made a sweeping six-wide move on the turn and finished third behind Cairo Prince (Pioneerof the Nile). Gyarmati is set to saddle the morning-line favorite for Saturday=s GII Jerome S., and she believes the trouble in the Nashua answered a lot of questions. Cont. p3 In This Issue

TDN Q&A cont.

TDN: What prompted your decision to relaunch Legacy Bloodstock?

TE: I think the overall health of the market and just starting to see an emergence of the smaller breeder started it. And, personally, I think it is a good time for me in my career. I=ve learned a lot of lessons and my experiences are greater now. But probably the main reason is just because my kids are showing an interest. If they decide to take this route in the horse business-- which I would love for them to do--one day I would want them to have the ability to do it.

TDN: Your family is obviously a big part of the new Legacy. How many kids do you have?

TE: We have three young boys--ages 10, 7 and 5. They are wanting to get involved in the business.

TDN: So, they=re not on the payroll quite yet! Your wife has worked for Breeders= Cup and NTRA. Will this be the first time you=ll be working together.

TE: My wife has been involved in the horse business for a long time and we=ve worked in the same industry working for the same goals, but never side by side. Being able to share this with her is great.

TDN: Is it intimidating, are you worried at all, to be working with your wife?

TE: It is. But the good thing about it is, she is probably the only person I=ve ever worked with that can get on me about stuff. So for me, that=s not all bad. She=ll tell me, AYou need to get on that--get that done.@ If you hire somebody, they are not going to tell you that.

TDN: You mentioned the emergence of the smaller breeder. Do you think the market has improved enough that the small breeder can make a profit again?

TE: Yes. What I=m starting to see is the return of the domestic businessman--the group of four or five guys who had some grocery stores or car dealerships or whatever, and they put in a few bucks a year and enjoy the sport. They left. They weren=t around. And now you see a lot healthier market and a lot better trade, a lot more shows and a lot more interest. I really think that for the next 10 years, until we start overbreeding again, we are in a very healthy time of the industry.

TDN Q & A cont. TDN: What kind of reaction did you get when you started recruiting horses for the January sale?

TE: I think probably most of my clients have been with me for so long, no matter what jacket or hat I wore, I represented them. I think most of them knew it was coming. I think most of them said, AYou were successful before, we don=t see any reason why you wouldn=t do it again.@ I really didn=t have anyone who was shocked by it. They all just thought it was a natural progression of growth and everybody getting healthy again financially and the industry and the market getting healthy again. TDN: You have 20 horses in your January consignment. Are they mostly for clients who have been with you over the years?

TE: A lot of them are. There are a couple of guys who are new who are referrals from clients who I=ve sold for for a lot of years and people who said, AHey, Tommy is getting rolling again. Let=s get him a couple of horses to get him started and give him a presence-type deals. I didn=t recruit for more than three or four days, so it was an amazing response. TDN: Is it gratifying to have that level of respect from people in the industry?

TE: It=s such a close industry because we cheer together, we shed tears together and we share beers together. It=s a pretty unique industry. We=re kind of TDN: What sales do you plan on selling at? close. It=s probably the only industry for a guy like myself. FELLOWES NEWMARKET’S NEWEST TRAINER Newmarket effectively only exists because the flat open heathland on which it sits was deemed suitable for the preparation of racehorses as far back as the 17th century. The small East Anglian town, which started out as a handful of stables, inns, hostels and cock-fighting pits around the palace of the most passionate racehorse owner of the day, King Charles II, has grown over time, but at its core still beats the heart of British horse racing. The 2500 acres of immaculately tended training grounds on Newmarket Heath engulf the town, and are the daily workplace of 76 licensed trainers, their staff and some of the country's best thoroughbreds, which number up to 3000 in the height of the Flat season. A January morning in Newmarket could hardly feel farther removed than balmy summer meetings on the July Course. Even on a dry day, the wind cuts across the Heath, no holds barred, hunching the shoulders of even the most hardened work riders as strings of young bluebloods skitter about in the icy blasts. The minds of the town's trainers have already turned to the season ahead, which can't come soon enough for most, even with the modern-day diversions of all-weather racing and, for some, the Carnival. One man with his thoughts firmly on the 2014 turf season is Charlie Fellowes, who is already plotting campaigns for the 15 equine residents at his barn at Saffron House Stables. When the British Horseracing Authority signs off on Fellowes' licence in the coming weeks, he will become the town's 77th trainer and, at 27, also its youngest. Tall and ever smiling, Fellowes may be new to the training ranks, but he is already a familiar figure in the town, having spent almost five years as assistant to James Fanshawe. "I started there a month before [dual Group 1 winner] Society Rock [Ire] ran in his first race, and I finished last season on the day he was meant to run in the Haydock Sprint Cup," recalls Fellowes, who also spent a year working in Australia for Lee Freedman. "Society Rock and I were pretty much there together all the way through, and he was a very special horse to me. If he manages to give his youngsters the toughness he Charlie Fellowes had himself, then he'll be a Emma Berry good stallion for Tally-Ho Stud. I hope I end up training one or two of his offspring."

Tales from the Heath cont.

While a number of Fanshawe's most recent big-race successes have been through his dual Group 1-winning sprinter, he has proved an adept handler of racehorses at all distances and under both codes, his flagbearers over the years having included the brilliant miler Soviet Song (Ire), top-class stayer Invermark (GB) and the Champion Hurdlers Royal Gait (GB) and Hors La Loi III (Fr). Fellowes is acutely aware of the advantage of having learned at the right hand of such a versatile trainer. He says: "James Fanshawe is the best horseman I've ever worked for. We got on well and I learned a huge amount from him. His ability to train any type of horse stands him apart for me and I just hope I'll be able to do the same. "It's largely down to Mr. Fanshawe that I've been given a really good chance. I've got 15 horses in at the moment, and that will go up to 20 by the beginning of the season, which is a great number to start with. He's really supported me--he spoke to one of his owners, Mohamed Obaida, and asked whether he might be able to send me a horse and he sent six." Fellowes, who grew up half an hour from Newmarket near Huntingdon, doesn't hail from a racing family, but it was his mother's membership of a racing syndicate that sparked his early interest. "Mum was really only involved in the partnership for the social side,@ he explained. AI used to go racing to Newmarket with her and we'd have a picnic in the car Despite the Christmas and New Year holidays park--they were my earliest experiences of racing.
