Kathy Kusner Homeboy’s and HHLA’s Co-ordinator President: David Frances Over a period of fi ve days in July, a group of trainees, children, Treasurer: Glen Strauss and grandchildren from Homeboy Industries ventured into the Secretary: Glenn Goodstein Santa Monica Mountains to learn the fundamentals of horses Nina Bonnie and riding. Th e experience was a fi rst; the peaceful stables of Craig Chambers, in Memoriam Mill Creek off ered a much-needed respite from downtown Los Joe Gillet Davies Angeles. Virginia Fout George Meyer One of our most enthusiastic riders was Madelyn, whose grandmother, Michelle Levario, participates Miranda Scott Jacob Wheeler in Homeboy’s 18-month program. Homeboys provides resources to formerly incarcerated and gang- involved men and women as they seek to redirect their lives and become contributing members of HHLA Adminstrative Director: the community. Before coming to Homeboys, Michelle was a gang member who struggled to fi nd Amy Sawelson Landes acceptance in a society that all too readily demonizes former felons even aft er they have paid their HHLA Ambassador: Kartoon debt to society. For the past few months, Homeboys has off ered full-time work, life skills classes and a Pro Bono Tax Accountant: welcoming atmosphere for Michelle and others as they transform their lives. Tamara Schuh Hanson and Hilary Franklin Th e chance to take a break from the pressures, when they are compounded by one’s status, is an Pro Bono Counsel: 501- C3 invaluable gift for our trainees. While Homeboys is Alex Fukui only able take a handful of the hundreds we serve every Pro Bono Trademark & day to Mill Creek, Horses in the Hood provides to Copyright: Jill Pietrini, those few a truly unforgettable experience. Moreover, Pro Bono Webmaster: Dallas Jones as that experience was shared with the wider Homeboy Pro Bono Facebook Manager: community, the work of Horses in the Hood sent the Jennifer Wilson message to our trainees that they are not alone in their Pro Bono Photos: struggle for justice, dignity and visibility. Ryan Miller and Vivian Nagy Newsletter Design: Kathy Kusner, Vivian Nagy and Britannia Press We want to thank Kathy, Amy, Jenna, and Ari - all Print & Production: Britannia Press of the Mill Creek staff and students - and all of the generous donors to Horses in the Hood!
