Assistant Conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Uruguayan-Israeli GISELE BEN-DOR spent last season as Assistant Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. Ms. Ben­ Dar has conducted orchestras on three continents, including the Israel Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Hungarian State Orchestras, the Berlin Symphony, the Bavarian and Luxembourg Radio Orchestras, the Israel Sinfonietta and Haifa Symphony, and in her native Uruguay, the Orquesta Nacional de Cclmara and Orquesta Sirifonica Municipal in Montevideo. Winner ofthe 1986 Bartok Prize of the Hungarian Radio and Television International Conductors' Competition, Ms. Ben-Dor was invited to conduct at the 1987 Bartok Festival. Other invitations followed to guest conduct several orchestras in Hungary and Yugoslavia and, by personal recommendation of Kurt Masur, orchestras in East Germany. Ms. Ben-Dor made a highly acclaimed debut in 1982 conducting the Israel Philhar­ monic Orchestra in Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, an event taped by the B. B. C. of London and broadcast throughout Europe. Since moving to the U.S. in 1980, Gis(de Ben-Dor has led orchestras at the Hollywood Bowl, the Tanglewood Festival and the Sommerfest in Minneapolis. At Tanglewood, she contributed to the celebration of Aaron Copland's 85th birthday, sharing a special con­ cert with Leonard Bernstein. Ms. Ben-Dor guest conducts throughout the U.S. and is scheduled to conduct at Carnegie Hall later this year. Fluent in five languages, including French, Italian, English, and her native Spanish and Hebrew, Ms. Ben-Dor studied conducting and piano at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv and received her Masters degree in conducting in 1982from the Yale Universi­ ty School of Music.

Composer ROBERT McCAULEY is pursuing a Master ofMusic degree at the Shepherd School ofMusic , currently studying under Richard Lavenda. From I978 to I982 he studied with Donald Martino and William Thomas McKinley at the New England Conservatory of Music. Recent compositions include After Beethoven for string quartet, performed in 1986 at the Shepherd School, and The Tausig Series for piano solo and Ringing Changes for Percussion Trio, both receiving premieres at the Shepherd School this spring.

Born in in 1922, IRWIN BAZELON graduated from DePaul University and later studied composition with . He has been a New York resident since I948, and as a result of living in big cities, his music is characterized by a dynamic energy that reflects the rhythmic pulse of city life. A jazz influence can also be found in many of his recent works. Bazelon has written a wide range ofmusic including orchestral, chamber, instrumen­ tal, and vocal works which have been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has conducted his music with such orchestras as the National Symphony, the Detroit Sym­ phony, the Kansas City Philharmonic, and the Orchestre National de Lille. He has had works commissioned by the Kansas City Philharmonic, the New Orleans Philharmonic, the American Brass Quintet, the Boehm Quintette, the Empire Brass Quintet, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, and the Koussevitzky Foundation. Bazelon has written a number of documentary film scores and is a noted authority on film music. His book, Knowing the Score - Notes on Film Music , is widely used on college campuses where he also lectures. Recent performances of Bazelon 's music, now published by Novello & Company, Ltd., include the premieres of Legends and Love Letters (for soprano and chamber ensemble) by Collage in November 1988 and Spires (for trumpet and orchestra) in February 1989 with the Orchestre National de Lille in France under the direction of Harold Farberman. Bazelon 's music has been recorded on the CRI, Orion and Louisville labels. The CONTINUUM PERCUSSION QUARTET was formed in the Fall of 1987 by members of the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble. Its purpose is to present works for percussion that are intimate and engaging in ways that are only possible with a small ensemble. GABRIEL DIONNE attended the Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec and was awarded the ''Premier Prix au Concours de Percussion'' in 1986. He is presently com­ pleting a Masters degree in percussion at the Shepherd School studying under Richard BroWn. Mr. Dionne's performing activities include concerts with the Houston Symphony Orchestra; Rice University's contemporary music ensemble, Pierrot Plus; the Da Camera Society; and the Texas Opera Theater Orchestra. A native of Quebec, Mr. Dionne has participated in several summer festivals around the United States, and he is currently a member of the IONOS Quartet. J. RIELY FRANCIS was born in Houston and began playing percussion at age ten. Under the guidance ofhis teacher Kenn Johnston, he was section leader of the Texas All­ State Orchestra for two years and a member of the All-State Band for one year. He has received awards from the Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity in contests at the University ofHouston and Texas Tech University, and is now pursuing a Bachelor ofMusic degree under Richard Brown at the Shepherd School. CHRISTOPHER ROSE, the youngest member of the Continuum Percussion Quartet, has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and the McDonald's All­ American High School Band while under the instruction of John Lawless. Now a student of Richard Brown at the Shepherd School, his additional activities include being a member of the Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar, American Waterways Wind Orchestra, and an extra percussionist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. A native Houstonian, RICHARD SKAINS attended the High School for Performing In his final year there he was a finalist in the Arts 1 and Visual Arts from 1981 to 1985. Recognition and Talent Search Competition and a finalist for the U.S. Presidential Scholar. He also played with the Houston Youth Symphony and was a member of the TMEA All­ J State Jazz Band during his senior year. Mr. Skains is currently a student ofRichard Brown at the Shepherd School. The Continuum Percussion Quartet is a winner of the 1988-89 Shepherd School Con­ certo Competition.
