Japanese tourists are fond of this instrument and two of the world’s most famous carillon- neurs come from Antwerp and are playing now carillon also abroad, one in St. Petersburg and one in Lake Wales, Florida. The carillon is an instrument of the world and thus it feels like the world of the carillon is coming home in our city. The city of Antwerp is greatly honored to host the World Carillon Congress 2014. Our city has a fascinating carillon history, which goes back to the end of the 15th century. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 12, 2019 EMV presents two nights of medieval concerts: Benjamin Bagby brings Beowulf: The Epic in Performance to Vancouver Playhouse on January 11 and Sequentia performs Charms, Riddles and Elegies on January 10 Vancouver, BC – Join EMV at the Vancouver Playhouse on Saturday January 11 at 7:30PM for Beowulf: The Epic in Performance featuring Benjamin Bagby. For over 25 years, Bagby has toured the globe performing his one-man show to universal and enthusiastic acclaim. Armed with nothing but a medieval harp and his captivating stage presence, Bagby draws audiences into an ancient world of valiant heroes and evil monsters. Though this millennia- old epic poem has spawned countless re-imaginings in novels, movies and theatre, Bagby’s dramatization has been uniquely successful. The New York Times says Bagby “comes as close to holding hundreds of people in a spell as ever a man has,” calling it “much too rare an experience in theater.” “As any parent at bedtime can tell you, storytelling is deeply satisfying,” explains Bagby. “I’ve been performing Beowulf for almost 30 years, and I find that as I age with this piece, it has become a part of me. I am able to live more fully in each moment and think less about how I am feeling, or what I am ‘trying’ to achieve. Sometimes it’s simply an out-of-body experience. I try to leave the exhilaration to the listeners and at the end, I thank my harp, remove my good luck talismans, and look forward to enjoying a beer.” Bagby’s telling is a remarkable, one-man tour de force. -

Patricia O’Connor The Anglo-Saxon Bee Charm is one of a select number of Old English charms that were previously described as being “strange companions” to the Old English Bede (Grant 5). Written in the outer margin of page 182 of Cambridge, Corpus Christi College MS 41 (CCCC41), the Bee Charm accompanies a passage from Chapter XVII of Book III of the Old English Bede which narrates the consecration of a monastic site. Curiously, however, the Bee Charm’s connection to this passage of the Old English Bede and its influence on our reading of this important text has hitherto been inadequately addressed. Consequently, the objective of this article is to critically reconsider the Bee Charm within its immediate manuscript context and to highlight and evaluate the correspondences shared between the Anglo-Saxon charm and the adjacent passage of the Old English Bede. This codi- cological reassessment seeks to present a new interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon Bee Charm through encouraging a more inclusive reading experience of CCCC41, which incorporates both the margins and the central text. In doing so, this study endeavours to offer significant insights into the function of theBee Charm within Anglo-Saxon society and to contribute to our understanding of how these charms were perceived and circulated within late Anglo-Saxon England.
