    Sequentia Benjamin Bagby, director Benjamin Bagby voice and Anglo-Saxon harp Hanna Marti voice and harps Stef Conner voice Norbert Rodenkirchen wooden and bone flutes, harp Words of Power Charms, Riddles and Elegies of the Medieval Northlands (8th-11th centuries) The musicians of Sequentia present songs of magic, exile, of the uncertainty of fate, of longing and regret, of the healing power of magic herbs, of irony and just plain fun. The pagan roots of the recently christianized medieval north can still be discerned in some of the oldest manuscript sources known to us today: the Old English Beowulf epic (possibly 8th century), the Old Icelandic Edda, the poems surviving in ancient songbooks such as The 10th-century Exeter Book, and numerous fragments from Germany and Switzerland. Each of these chants, songs and spoken riddles gives us a glimpse into a time so distant from ours and yet near in spirit, a world of singing poets, warriors, valkyries and seeresses, healers and philosophers, whose creations were the first to be written down in English and other Germanic languages (in addition to Old English, we perform songs in Old High German and Old Icelandic, with a hint of Latin). In reconstructing lost musical traditions from this time, Sequentia searches once again to resonate again those long-silent, ancient voices, sometimes accompanied by harps and flutes, which would have been welcomed in any gathering of souls, pagan or Christian, those seeking help for their problems, entertaining their friends, or those giving voice to their longing for a lost partner, or a lost tribe.

Every ensemble has its origins in a feeling of sympathy among like-minded musicians: at first there are enthusiasms for specific repertoires, perhaps a vision of sound, shared goals, and a lot of late-night discussion, hopefully matched in intensity by endless rehearsal. This was also the case for the origin of Sequentia, which was conceived at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, beginning in 1975 as a student group, and which evolved until the first professional concert under the name ‘Sequentia’ given on 29 March 1977 in Brussels. By the autumn of that year, Sequentia was firmly established in Cologne. What follows are some memories of the ensemble’s beginnings in Basel, and the transition from Basel to Cologne.     Finding the Lost Voice of our Germanic Ancestors: An Interview with Benjamin Bagby Joshua Buckley “Early Music” is usually defined as music originating prior to the end of the Baroque period in 1750. As most compositions written before the eighteenth century were under-prescriptive, one of the central issues for early music performers is the open- ended nature of historical interpretation. For performers of medieval music, or music written earlier than 1300, the problem is even thornier. As Benjamin Bagby has written: “We some- times may know how this music was performed, but we will never know how it sounded.” This is why the quality and style of early music (and especially medieval music) can vary so dramat- ically. Performances tend to oscillate between dry academicism (many early music performers are more qualified as professors than musicians), and what Bagby calls “drums and fun” (think: Renaissance Fairs, the Society for Creative Anachronism, and pointy shoes). While Bagby has lamented the fact that medieval music has yet to embrace the kind of rigorous discipline one finds in other genres, his own work has been a remarkable excep- tion. Since forming the medieval music ensemble Sequentia with the late Barbara Thornton in 1977, Bagby has continued to develop as a researcher and scholar, a teacher, and performer. He has thoughtfully dissected and carefully reassembled the concept of historically informed performance. And perhaps most impor- tantly, his ability to balance scholarship with passionate personal engagement has earned Sequentia its reputation as the most famous medieval music group in the world. Among the many projects that fill out Sequentia’s sprawling discography, the group has performed some of the earliest songs ever written in the English language (English Songs of the Middle Ages, 1988), explored early Spanish music (on the Vox Iberica trilogy, 1992), and recorded a sampling of monophonic narrative Vol.

  • Allison Monroe Is the Recipient of the 2017 Barbara Thornton Memorial Scholarship Awarded by Early Music America
    Allison Monroe is the recipient of the 2017 Barbara Thornton Memorial Scholarship awarded by Early Music America. This award is given by EMA to “an outstanding and highly-motivated (and possibly unconventional) young performer of medieval music who seeks to widen his/her experience through more advanced study and/or auditions in Europe.” The recipient is chosen by a jury of musicians who knew or worked with the great medieval music specialist and teacher, Barbara Thornton (1950-1998), who came to Europe from New York in 1970, filled with plans to study early music, and went on to co-found the medieval music ensemble Sequentia with Benjamin Bagby in 1977. The selection of Allison Monroe was unanimous and enthusiastic. The jurors were impressed by Allison's clearly-stated project, her presentation, her singing and playing with passion, mastery and depth of feeling, and her dedication to her art. Excerpts of some remarks by the jurors: “I have rarely encountered such a purposeful player, whose bow seems to be an extension of her musical thought, effortlessly flowing with great dignity from idea into sound”. “Allison Monroe gets to the heart of what this award is about--both in the way she plans to dedicate herself to European studies in a focused manner, and in the way her presentation honors Barbara Thornton's spirit: she transmits being personally authentic, and that is the truest and perhaps only real type of authenticity we can strive for in these strange times. “ “...a convincing vocal approach, taking into consideration a self-accompanied Cantiga de Santa Maria as a rhetorical challenge, and developing a convincing accompaniment approach through heterophonic playing on rebec.

Professional Activities . 1977 – present: Co-founder & co-director (since 1998 sole director), vocalist and harpist: Sequentia ensemble for medieval music. Bagby has created over 70 innovative concert programs of medieval music and music drama, giving performances in Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East, Japan, Korea, and Australia. Sequentia performs 15 to 30 concerts yearly, developing 1-2 new programs each year. 1978 – present: Numerous recordings with European radio and television, 1978-2005. The booklets which accompany these recordings are of the highest scholarly quality. Mr. Bagby has collaborated with such philologists as Peter Dronke, Pierre Bec, Ulrich Müller, Heimir Palsson and Laurence Moulinier, and with musicologists such as Leo Treitler, Edward Roesner, Hartmut Möller and Richard Crocker. 1981 – present: Recordings (LP and CD): over two dozen (see discography). 1984 – present: Bagby and Sequentia have been dedicated to teaching intensive summer courses in medieval music performance. The most important of these is the two-week course taught yearly at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Of the more than 200 students who have attended this advanced course over the years, more than 20 have gone on to become members of Sequentia or of other professional ensembles.
