There’s no substitute for vine age.” Ted Lemon, Littorai There is no consensus or legal definition of “old vine” Pinot Noir. Wikipedia states, “In a place where wine production is longstanding, it often means a wine whose vines are thirty to forty years old.” I have used forty years (1980) as the cut-off for my California old vine Pinot Noir bucket list. Some would consider these “mature” vines only, insisting that the term “old” be reserved for vines older than this such as 125-year-old Zinfandel vines in California that are still bearing small amounts of fruit. Hanzell 1953 Ambassador’s Vineyard Pinot Noir Vine The term “old-vine” has created debate for years in the wine industry. Most winemakers believe the terminology should be defined and regulated. Some choose to define “old-vine” as a minimum of 20 years and others prefer 50 years as a minimum. There are also disagreements about the percentage of grapes that should be required in a wine labeled “old-vine.” Some winemakers would agree that “old-vine” grapes should make up at least 85% of the grapes contained in a wine sold as “old-vine,” and others demand that 95% of the grapes be from “old-vine” sources. There are variances to consider among different varietals as well. For example, Pinot Noir vineyards over 20 years are considered old, yet Zinfandel from a 20 year-old vineyard would not be labeled “old-vine.” The issue of “old-vines” results from the perception by many consumers who consider “old-vine” wines better.

The Swiss-born couple with a passion for wine quickly recognized that this mountainous region had every element vital to growing premium wine grapes: alluvial soils that provide excellent drainage, plenty of sunshine to develop rich, ripe fruit, and enough fog and wind to keep grape acids in perfect harmony. The family started investing in the land, building the winery, and planting grapes in their first two of six estate vineyards: Smith and Hook. In 1980, the grapes grown on the hillside vineyards surrounding the winery became the Hahn’s first vintage of commercially available wine. Later in the 1980s, Nicky furthered his commitment to quality by driving efforts to establish the Santa Lucia Highlands as its own AVA. ESTABLISHING AN AVA In 1988, Nicky began the multi-year process of defining the unique attributes and boundaries of the Santa Lucia Highlands. In 1991, the hard work paid off when the region was recognized as an official American Viticulture Area (AVA). LOHR’S uncanny prescience, Lohr recognized that this beautiful, broad Central WHITE WINE PORTFOLIO Coast valley, spread between the Santa Lucia Range to the west and the Gabilan Range to the east, would be ideal white wine terroir. Arroyo Seco takes its name from the usually-dry bed of a stream that originates in the Santa Lucias and runs northeastward to join the Salinas River, which eventually empties into Monterey Bay. Captivated by this dramatic location and its attributes, Lohr planted 280 acres of vines in Greenfield. The locale was in the heart of what would eventually—thanks to Lohr’s and others’ efforts—become the Arroyo Seco AVA in 1983. The region owes its long growing season to lingering fog and a cooling “wind run” from nearby Monterey Bay; the stony, well-drained soils and lack of rain during the fall season prove ideal for Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and, especially, Chardonnay.
