Kino: The Western Undergraduate Journal of Film Studies Volume 1 | Issue 1 Article 1 2010 The Search for Spectators: VistaVision and Technicolor in The Searchers Ruurd Dykstra The University of Western Ontario, [email protected] Abstract With the growing popularity of television in the 1950s, theaters experienced a significant drop in audience attendance. Film studios explored new ways to attract audiences back to the theater by making film a more totalizing experience through new technologies such as wide screen and Technicolor. My paper gives a brief analysis of how these new technologies were received by film critics for the theatrical release of The Searchers ( John Ford, 1956) and how Warner Brothers incorporated these new technologies into promotional material of the film. Keywords Technicolor, The Searchers Recommended Citation Dykstra, Ruurd (2010) "The Search for Spectators: VistaVision and Technicolor in The Searchers," Kino: The Western Undergraduate Journal of Film Studies: Vol. 1 : Iss. 1 , Article 1. Dykstra: The Search for Spectators The Search for Spectators: VistaVision and Technicolor in The Searchers by Ruurd Dykstra In order to compete with the rising popularity of television, major Hollywood studios lured spectators into the theatres with technical innovations that television did not have - wider screens and brighter colors. Studios spent a small fortune developing new photographic techniques in order to compete with one another; this boom in photographic research resulted in a variety of different film formats being marketed by each studio, each claiming to be superior to the other. Filmmakers and critics alike valued these new formats because they allowed for a bright, clean, crisp image to be projected on a much larger screen - it enhanced the theatre going experience and brought about a re- appreciation for film’s visual aesthetics.

  • Norman Bates As “One of Us”: Freakery in Alfred Hitchcock's
an online journal of trespassing art, science, and philosophy www.trespassingjournal.com Trespassing Bodies: Issue 6, Winter 2017 Norman Bates as “One of us”: Freakery in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho1 Amanda Roberts Northern Illinois University Abstract In the mid-nineteenth-century, P.T. Barnum gained a fame for exhibiting attractions and persons such as the Feejee Mermaid, “General” Tom Thumb, and Joice Heath. While freakshows had previously existed to a certain extent, they did not gain great popularity until this period. However, with increased access to travel through rail lines, it was possible to bring freaks to spectators, rather than spectators traveling long distances to gaze at freaks. In addition, industrialization made more leisure time possible for persons who previously would not have had such a luxury. Also, industrialization was beginning to shape perceptions of what was considered a normal body; bodies ought to be able to operate standardized machinery and wear mass-produced clothing. Thus, it was a shift in culture that made the freak show possible. Rosemarie Garland- Thompson argues that freaks are made, not born, and the people often described as freaks of nature are in fact, “freaks of culture” (10). Nadja Durbach believes these freaks of culture were valued or devalued as the case might be for their ability to shatter dichotomies (3). This epistemological shift in the way bodies were perceived came from a practice Robert Bogdan has called “freakery,” which he defines as “a way of thinking about and presenting people –a frame of mind and a set of practices” (24). The creation of freaks was achieved through various means, through exotisizing the other, through medical testimony, pure showmanship, and sometimes plain trickery.

  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

IMTA ALUM JESSICA BIEL IN HITCHCOCK IMTA Press Release November 21, 2012 Hitchcock opens in limited release Friday, Nov. 23, nationwide Jan. 10, 2013 “There’s no way not to give a really good performance because you’re in this really warm environment.” – Jessica Biel on her Hitchcock experience If you’re not familiar with the story of the 1960 horror classic Psycho, it might help to see it before you see Hitchcock, the story of the making of the award-winning Psycho intertwined with the love story between filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma. Psycho starred Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles and John Gavin, the plot following a young woman who steals $40,000 from her employer's client, and subsequently encounters a young motel proprietor too long under the domination of his mother. Psycho was an instant hit and scared audiences around the world with one of the most horrific and iconic shower scenes ever filmed—famously prompting star Janet Leigh to remark that watching the scene made her realize how vulnerable a woman was in a shower and vowing to never shower again, but only take baths. Hitchcock is not a re-make of Psycho, but an insider’s look at how the influential director came to make the film against fearsome odds, such as strict censors (who, for example, did not want a flushing toilet on screen) and a reticent studio that set a low budget in the belief that the film would fail. LA94 IMTA alum Jessica Biel stars in the film as Vera Miles, alongside Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock, Helen Mirren as Alma, Scarlet Johansson as Janet Leigh and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins.

GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic.
