A Mathematical Derivation of the General Relativistic Schwarzschild Metric An Honors thesis presented to the faculty of the Departments of Physics and Mathematics East Tennessee State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Honors Scholar and Honors-in-Discipline Programs for a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics by David Simpson April 2007 Robert Gardner, Ph.D. Mark Giroux, Ph.D. Keywords: differential geometry, general relativity, Schwarzschild metric, black holes ABSTRACT The Mathematical Derivation of the General Relativistic Schwarzschild Metric by David Simpson We briefly discuss some underlying principles of special and general relativity with the focus on a more geometric interpretation. We outline Einstein’s Equations which describes the geometry of spacetime due to the influence of mass, and from there derive the Schwarzschild metric. The metric relies on the curvature of spacetime to provide a means of measuring invariant spacetime intervals around an isolated, static, and spherically symmetric mass M, which could represent a star or a black hole. Relativistic Dynamics
Chapter 4 Relativistic dynamics We have seen in the previous lectures that our relativity postulates suggest that the most efficient (lazy but smart) approach to relativistic physics is in terms of 4-vectors, and that velocities never exceed c in magnitude. In this chapter we will see how this 4-vector approach works for dynamics, i.e., for the interplay between motion and forces. A particle subject to forces will undergo non-inertial motion. According to Newton, there is a simple (3-vector) relation between force and acceleration, f~ = m~a; (4.0.1) where acceleration is the second time derivative of position, d~v d2~x ~a = = : (4.0.2) dt dt2 There is just one problem with these relations | they are wrong! Newtonian dynamics is a good approximation when velocities are very small compared to c, but outside of this regime the relation (4.0.1) is simply incorrect. In particular, these relations are inconsistent with our relativity postu- lates. To see this, it is sufficient to note that Newton's equations (4.0.1) and (4.0.2) predict that a particle subject to a constant force (and initially at rest) will acquire a velocity which can become arbitrarily large, Z t ~ d~v 0 f ~v(t) = 0 dt = t ! 1 as t ! 1 . (4.0.3) 0 dt m This flatly contradicts the prediction of special relativity (and causality) that no signal can propagate faster than c. Our task is to understand how to formulate the dynamics of non-inertial particles in a manner which is consistent with our relativity postulates (and then verify that it matches observation, including in the non-relativistic regime). -

This paper mainly uses [2], [3], [4], and [6] as a basis, and in addition contains short references to more in-depth references such as [1], [5], [7], and [8] when more depth was needed. With an introduction to manifolds and notation, special rel- ativity can be constructed which are the relativistic equations of flat space-time. After flat space-time, the Lagrangian and calculus of vari- ations will be introduced to construct the Einstein-Hilbert action to derive the Einstein field equations. With the field equations at hand the Schwarzschild equation will fall out with a few assumptions. -

To "square the circle": Given a circle, to construct a square of the same area, 2. To "trisect an angle": Given an angle, to construct another angle 1/3 of the original angle, 3. To "double the cube": Given a cube, to construct a cube with twice the area. Unfortunately, it is not possible to complete any of these tasks until additional tools (such as a marked ruler) are provided. In section 2 we will examine the process of constructing numbers using a compass and straightedge. We will then express constructions in algebraic terms. In section 3 we will derive several results about transcendental numbers. There are two goals: One, to show that the numbers e and π are transcendental, and two, to show that the three classical geometry problems are unsolvable. The two goals, of course, will turn out to be related. 2 Constructions in the plane The discussion in this section comes from [8], with some parts expanded and others removed. The classical Greeks were clear on what constitutes a construction. Given some set of points, new points can be defined at the intersection of lines with other lines, or lines with circles, or circles with circles. -

General Relativity Fall 2019 Lecture 15: Linearized Einstein field equations Yacine Ali-Ha¨ımoud October 17th 2019 SUMMARY FROM PREVIOUS LECTURE We are considering nearly flat spacetimes with nearly globally Minkowski coordinates: gµν = ηµν + hµν , with jhµν j 1. Such coordinates are not unique. First, we can make Lorentz transformations and keep a µ ν globally-Minkowski coordinate system, with hµ0ν0 = Λ µ0 Λ ν0 hµν , so that hµν can be seen as a Lorentz tensor µ µ µ ν field on flat spacetime. Second, if we make small changes of coordinates, x ! x − ξ , with j@µξ j 1, the metric perturbation remains small and changes as hµν ! hµν + 2ξ(µ,ν). By analogy with electromagnetism, we can see these small coordinate changes as gauge transformations, leaving the Riemann tensor unchanged at linear order. Since we will linearize the relevant equations, we may work in Fourier space: each Fourier mode satisfies an independent equation. We denote by ~k the wavenumber and by k^ its direction and k its norm. We have decomposed the 10 independent components of the metric perturbation according to their transformation properties under spatial rotations: there are 4 independent \scalar" components, which can be taken, for instance, ^i ^i^j to be h00; k h0i; hii, and k k hij { or any 4 linearly independent combinations thereof. Zizung Yoon Technical University of Berlin Department of Astronautics and Aeronautics Berlin, Germany May 31, 2012 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a straight-forward and practical introduction to quaternion operation and calculation for rigid-body attitude representation. Therefore the basic quaternion denition as well as transformation rules and conversion rules to or from other attitude representation parameters are summarized. The quaternion computation rules are supported by practical examples to make each step comprehensible. 1 Introduction Quaternions are widely used as attitude represenation parameter of rigid bodies such as space- crafts. This is due to the fact that quaternion inherently come along with some advantages such as no singularity and computationally less intense compared to other attitude parameters such as Euler angles or a direction cosine matrix. Mainly, quaternions are used to • Parameterize a spacecraft's attitude with respect to reference coordinate system, • Propagate the attitude from one moment to the next by integrating the spacecraft equa- tions of motion, • Perform a coordinate transformation: e.g. calculate a vector in body xed frame from a (by measurement) known vector in inertial frame. However, dierent references use several notations and rules to represent and handle attitude in terms of quaternions, which might be confusing for newcomers [5], [4]. Therefore this article gives a straight-forward and clearly notated introduction into the subject of quaternions for attitude representation. The attitude of a spacecraft is its rotational orientation in space relative to a dened reference coordinate system. -

If a unit vector u in the plane R2 is placed in standard position with its tail at the origin, then it's head will land on the unit circle x2 + y2 = 1. Every point on the unit circle (x; y) is of the form (cos θ; sin θ) where θ is the angle measured from the positive x-axis in the counterclockwise direction. u=(x;y)=(cos θ; sin θ) 7 '$θ q &% Thus, every unit vector in the plane is of the form u = (cos θ; sin θ). We can interpret unit vectors as being directions, and we can use them in place of angles since they carry the same information as an angle. In three dimensions, we also use unit vectors and they will still signify directions. Unit 3 vectors in R correspond to points on the sphere because if u = (u1; u2; u3) is a unit vector, 2 2 2 3 then u1 + u2 + u3 = 1. Each unit vector in R carries more information than just one angle since, if you want to name a point on a sphere, you need to give two angles, longitude and latitude.
