Monday The Opposites Game for Patricia Maisch This day my students and I play the Opposites Game with a line from Emily Dickinson. My life had stood a loaded gun, it goes and I write it on the board, pausing so they can call out the antonyms –

My Your Life Death Had stood ? Will sit A Many Loaded Empty Gun ?

Gun. For a moment, very much like the one between lightning and its sound, the children just stare at me, and then it comes, a flurry, a hail storm of answers –

Flower, says one. No, Book, says another. That's stupid, cries a third, the opposite of a gun is a pillow. Or maybe a hug, but not a book, no way is it a book. With this, the others gather their thoughts and suddenly it’s a shouting match. No one can agree, for every student there’s a final answer. It's a song, a prayer, I mean a promise, like a wedding ring, and later a baby. Or what’s that person who delivers babies?

A midwife? Yes, a midwife. No, that’s wrong. You're so wrong you’ll never be right again. It's a whisper, a star, it's saying I love you into your hand and then touching someone's ear. Are you crazy? Are you the president of Stupid-land? You should be, When's the election? It’s a teddy bear, a sword, a perfect, perfect peach. Go back to the first one, it's a flower, a white rose. When the bell rings, I reach for an eraser but a girl snatches it from my hand. Nothing's decided, she says, We’re not done here. I leave all the answers on the board. The next day some of them have stopped talking to each other, they’ve taken sides.

There's a Flower club. And a Kitten club. And two boys calling themselves The Snowballs. The rest have stuck with the original game, which was to try to write something like poetry.

It's a diamond, it's a dance, the opposite of a gun is a museum in France. It's the moon, it's a mirror, it's the sound of a bell and the hearer.

The arguing starts again, more shouting, and finally a new club. For the first time I dare to push them. Maybe all of you are right, I say.

Well, maybe. Maybe it's everything we said. Maybe it’s everything we didn't say. It's words and the spaces for words. They're looking at each other now. It's everything in this room and outside this room and down the street and in the sky.

It's everyone on campus and at the mall, and all the people waiting at the hospital. And at the post office. And, yeah, it's a flower, too. All the flowers. The whole garden. The opposite of a gun is wherever you point it.

Don’t write that on the board, they say. Just say poem. Your death will sit through many empty poems. Available from: https://theamericanjournalofpoetry.com/v2-constantine.html [accessed 10 May 2010]

Wednesday A verb is a word that conveys an action. However, some verbs, like “concentrating” and “planning”, are difficult to act out. So how can you know if a word is a verb or not? First, ask yourself if you can act it out. If your answer is “yes”, it is a verb. If not, ask yourself a second question: can it change tense? If your answer is “yes”, it is a verb! Thursday

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was likely inspired by when naming the character of Salazar Slytherin. In the book, Slytherin helped create the Hogwarts school, which is divided into four houses. One of those houses is named after Slytherin. Now, scientists in India have named a new snake species after him. A species is a group of closely related organisms. The scientists named the new species salazar, or Salazar's pit viper. Pit vipers are a type of venomous snake. The snake is the newest member of a group of snakes that includes at least 48 species of pit viper that live in Asia. Scientists found the snake in India's northern state of Arunachal Pradesh. A paper published in the April 2020 issue of Zoosystematics and Evolution talked about the new snake. In the past year, the scientists have discovered five new reptiles. These include Salazar's pit viper, three other snakes and a tortoise. Researchers say that pit vipers can be tough to tell apart because they look so much alike. However, Salazar's pit viper seems to be set apart from the rest by an orange-reddish stripe found on the sides of the heads of males. In the Harry Potter books, the character Salazar Slytherin was an infamous Parselmouth, or a wizard who can speak the language of snakes. The symbol of the Slytherin house is a snake. According to legend, Slytherin liked students who were cunning, ambitious and resourceful. Salazar's pit viper now joins a small club of that are named after characters or places in the Harry Potter books. For example, scientists have named several spider species after Aragog, a gargantuan spider that made an appearance in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." Scientists also named a dinosaur Dracorex hogwartsia, which literally translates to "dragon king of Hogwarts." Wednesday Thursday Bird in the classroom by Colin Thiele

The students drowsed and drowned In the teacher’s ponderous monotone – Limp bodies looping in the wordy heat, Melted and run together, desks and flesh as one, Swooning and swimming in a sea of drone. 5

Each one asleep, swayed and vaguely drifted With lidding eyes and lolling, weighted heads, Was caught on heavy waves and dimly lifted, Sunk slowly, ears ringing, in the syrup of his sound, Or borne from the room on a heaving wilderness of beds 10

And then, on a sudden, a bird’s cool voice Punched out song. Crisp and spare On the startled air, Beak-beamed Or idly tossed 15 Each note gleamed Like a bead of frost.

A bird’s cool voice from a neighbour tree With five clear calls – mere grains of sound Rare and neat 20 Repeated twice … But they sprang the heat Like drops of ice.

Ears cocked, before the comment ran Fading and chuckling where a wattle stirred, 25 The students wondered how they could have heard Such dreary monotones from man, Such wisdom from a bird.

Wednesday Alliteration is a sound device used in poetry where a consonant sound is repeated at the beginning of a number of words e.g. She sold sea shells at the sea shore.

Thursday When you are asked to contrast two things, you need to point out the differences between the two things. For example, if you contrast Antarctica with the Arctic, you could say the Arctic is at the North Pole, while Antarctica is at the South Pole.
