    Of Griffins, Lions, and Unicorns: Zymurgical Heraldry in Britain and Abroad by Lynn Pearson The histories of beer, brewing, and heraldry have many interconnections. Heraldic imagery concerned with beer and brewing is first seen in the medieval era and has continued to appear in literary, architectural, and artistic contexts right up to the present day, where it makes an important contribution to our visual culture. Beer-related architectural imagery also has a significant presence in the public realm, but despite this has generally passed unnoticed by researchers. The broad technical term for the heraldry of beer is zymurgical heraldry, from zymurgy, the branch of chemistry that deals with fermentation by yeast. Thus zymurgical heraldry is the heraldry of beer and brewing, although it can of course also refer to the heraldry of wine and vinification: some work on heraldic sources of wine bottle label imagery has recently been carried out in the USA (and its effectiveness is considered in Daniel McCabe’s essay in this volume).1 The term ‘zymurgical heraldry’ made its initial appearance in 2007, in a lecture given in New York which largely concentrated on beer-bottle label collecting (labology).2 The entry for zymurgical heraldry in the Oxford Companion to Beer (2012) promotes this interpretation and application.3 Along with work on inn signs and analysis of the arms of the Brewers’ Company, zymurgical heraldry has otherwise been little noticed. This is curious, since heraldic symbolism can be found throughout the brewing world, usually in the form of elements such as a supporter or crest, and sometimes a shield or motto, rather than a complete achievement.

Galley, the purpose of which was to correct mistaken impressions about the coats of arms of the College. While the present author, in the account that follows of the various achieve­ ments, is greatly indebted to Mr. Galley, he suggests that there are still errors to correct, and with due deference attempts to do so. Until 1575, the only evidence of armorial bearings, though highly valuable, are the various College seals. The earliest is the seal made for St. Bernard's College in 1446. It depicts St. Bernard seated beneath a canopy. Beneath him on the left is the kneeling president, and on the right, the figures, also kneeling, of the original four fellows ; between them there is a shield bearing the arms of France modern and of England, quarterly. (Fig. 1.) In 1448, when Queen Margaret of Anjou, the wife of Henry VI and daughter of King René (or Reynard) of Sicily and Jerusalem re-founded theCollege, a new seal was made, which added the Fig. 1 figure of St. Margaret and changed the shield to the Queen's own arms. Since these are the basis for the present coat, it would perhaps be advisable to give a short description. There are six quarterings. The first is that of Hungary, a barry of eight argent (silver) and gules (red), which had descended to Margaret from Azure Blue her ancestor Charles II of Anjou, who had married Mary, the daughter and heiress of Stephen IV, King of Hungary.

Within the pseudo-medieval world created by G.R.R. Martin, a great deal of detail has gone into establishing coats of arms for the characters and families that are depicted. These arms fulfill an extremely important role, both within the arc of the story and as part of the marketing collateral of this very successful series. This article examines the role of arms in the Game of Thrones universe and explores how the heraldic system transcends the usual genealogical display and functions more as a type of familial branding. An exploration of some of the practices and idiosyncrasies of heraldry in the franchise shows that whilst Martin sets his foundation firmly in the traditional, he then extends this into the fanciful; in much the same manner as he does with other faux-historical aspects of his work. This study is valuable because Game of Thrones has brought heraldry from being a niche interest to something that is now consumed by a global audience of hundreds of millions of people.
