Big Mouth Project Big Mouth Project Netflix features the cartoon series Big Mouth that centers on middle school children entering puberty. Our concerns with this show include vulgar language, sexual perversion involving children, extreme sexual conduct, and it’s inherent attraction to young viewers. This project shares evidence of the harmful nature of this show, as well as a course of action urging Netflix to remove this show from their catalog immediately. Harmful and Sexual Content involving Children Released in 2017, Netflix original series Big Mouth has harmful sexual content involving children and is flooded with inappropriate scenes showing children’s genitalia, continual reference to genitalia and sex in explicit manners, adult figures inciting sexual activity among children, and steady use of vulgar language. In the beginning five minutes of the season’s first episode, viewers get an up-close picture of a thirteen-year-old boy’s genitalia. Later in the series, viewers get visited by a young girl having a conversation with her vagina, a clip of an adult male’s penis, and an adult monster who shouts, “hold him [the boy] down and jam it [penis] in his mouth!” These are just a few examples of many disturbing scenes. Others scenes include a boy ejaculating while dancing with a young girl at a school dance, a boy masturbating under his bed sheets, and a father advising his son to kiss a penis. This show is a demoralizing, sexually explicit, and a maltreatment of children entering the pubescent stage of life. Natural Attraction to Young Viewers and Easily Accessible Netflix original series Big Mouth has all the similarities to attract young viewers with similar cartoon animation style as current or recent shows on network television popular among youth such as Family Guy, American Dad!, and Bob’s Burgers, which attracts millions of viewers each year.1 The show itself centers around the life of middle school students, their entrance into puberty, and sexuality- all of which can spark curiosity among young viewers. According to University of Washington Harborview Medical Center, “It is not unusual for grade school children to become increasingly curious about adult sexual behavior. By age 10, many children are showing the first signs of puberty, and their interest in what this means increases... [by middle school] children become increasingly aware of their own sexual feelings that naturally go along with puberty.”2 At the end of 2016, Netflix rolled out with its screensaver feature that displays a rotating selection of Netflix original series shows.3 When Netflix is left idle on a smart television, Big Mouth, as well as other original series, 1 Family Guy, Wikipedia, www.wikipedia.org/wiki/family_guy, accessed 3/5/18. 2 Sexual behavior and children: when is it a problem and what to do about it, University of Washington Harborview Medical Center, 2012. https://depts.washington.edu/hcsats/PDF/TF-%20CBT/pages/3%20Psychoeducation/Child%20Sexual%2 0Behaviors/Sexual%20Behavior%20and%20Children.pdf. 3 Sarah Perez, Netflix adds a screensaver to its tv apps to promote its original content, TechCrunch, Apr 7, 2017. techcrunch.com/2017/04/07/netflix-adds-a-screensaver-to-its-tv-apps-to-promote-its-original-content/amp/ . are advertised on the television in the home and inadvertently to young viewers. Big Mouth is a natural attraction to young viewers and Netflix promotes it to everyone. Shows on Netflix, no matter the content, can be easily accessible to children. Parents can enable parental controls, but only to the extent of barring access to material by a four-digit passcode. When someone attempts to watch a show that falls under a content category restriction, a four-digit bar appears prompting the passcode. All it takes is discovering or being handed the passcode one time, and children have access to any content offered by Netflix. Netflix counted more than 100 million subscribers who stream one billion hours of content a week.4 Harmful to Children “Exposing children and teenagers to sexual content that appears in this show is reckless and can lead to some very devastating actions that young people will later regret,” says Eddie Capparucci, who is a Clinical Expert/Contributor for the National Decency Coalition. “This program is giving kids sexual messages that are inappropriate and, in some cases, if acted upon, would be considered illegal.” 4 110 amazing netflix statistics and facts, DMR, Jan 27, 2018. https://expandedramblings.com/index.php/netflix_statistics-facts/. “As adults we should be protecting our children from exposure to outside sources that provide them with sexual stimuli. We should be the primary source providing healthy information about sex,” says Capparucci, who has a private practice in Marietta, GA and is certified in the treatment of sexual and pornography addiction. “We need to remember the brain is not fully developed until we reach our mid-20s, therefore, kids are more likely to act based on their emotions instead of rational decision making. What worries me most about a program like Big Mouth is kids mimicking what they see and acting out against other innocent children.” “I am sure the creators of the show would say its content is geared to adults,” Capparucci continued. “However, the fact that it is animated and centers around the lives of young teenagers make it a television program kids would want to investigate.” “I have seen first hand the devastating impact pornography has had on individuals and relationships,” said Capparucci whose clients have included NFL and MLB players. “And in nearly every case an individual who became addicted to pornography stumbled across it at an early age. What it does is create a distorted view of sex and teaches viewers to objectify others for their own sexual gratification.” Public Reaction Movieguide recently wrote an article on the show warning parents and television viewers of the extremely harmful content that Big Mouth poses to children. It finds contradictions comparing the content of the show to Netflix’s statement of “core values”.5 CitizenGo launched a petition urging Netflix to pull the show from their catalog. The petition received over 100,000 signatures, and noted harmful content coming from this show such as, “nocturnal ejaculation, [and] crude depictions of menstruation….”6 Tiffany Leeper, Founder of Girls Against Porn & Human Trafficking, in regards to Big Mouth, stated, “For an adult to even watch the explicit content on this show is difficult – it cannot be disputed that content on the episodes is often really soft-core porn, or pornographic content and can’t even explicitly be repeated to a general audience. Female and male private parts are shown in cartoon format, the advocating of oral sex of minors, and encouraging adolescents who already have a difficult time in understanding how their body might be changing during development, and sends the message that you can be sexually exploited, sexually addicted, sexually violated, and the viewing/touching of your private body parts by anyone else is okay. Every parent should be outraged that this show is even being allowed on the air and should immediately file a complaint with the FCC, and Department of Justice in violation of federal ‘harmful to minors’ and ‘obscenity’ laws.” Intent of Project Netflix cartoon series Big Mouth is harmful and demoralizing to young viewers for its constant use of vulgar language, sexual perversion involving 5 Netflix disgusting new animated show is about children becoming more sexually aware, David Outten, Movieguide. https://www.movieguide.org/news-articles/netflixs-disgusting-new-animated-show-children-becoming-sex ually-aware.html. 6 #Nobigmouth- vulgar netflix show sexualizes adolescence, Sept. 20, 2017, CitizenGO. http://www.citizengo.org/en/md/92875-nobigmouth-vulgar-netflix-show-sexualizes-adolescence children, extreme sexual conduct, and for it’s inherent attraction to young viewers. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

  • Family Guy” 1
Michael Fox MC 330:001 TV Analysis “Family Guy” 1. Technical A. The network the show runs on is Fox. The new episodes run on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. central time. The show runs between 22 to 24 minutes. B. The show has no prologue or epilogue in the most recent episodes. The show used to have a prologue that ran about 1 minute and 30 seconds. It also has an opening credit scene that runs 30 seconds. It does occasionally run a prologue for a previous show, but those are very rare in the series. C. There are three acts to the show. For this episode, Act I ran about 8 minutes, Act II about 7 minutes, and Act III about 7 minutes. The Acts are different in each episode. The show does not always run the same length every time so the Acts will change accordingly. D. The show has three commercial breaks. Each break is three minutes long. With this I will still need about 30 pages to make sure there are enough for the episode. 2. Sets A. There are two main “locations” in the show. These are the Griffin House and the Drunken Clam. The Griffin House has different sets inside and outside of it. For example, there are scenes in the kitchen, family room, upstairs corridor, Meg’s room, Chris’ room, Peter and Lois’ room, and Stewie’s room. There are other places the family goes, but those are not in all most every episode. B. I will describe each in detail by dividing the two into which is used more in the series.

Te Family Guy episode “I Dream of Jesus” (October 5, 2008) begins with the type of scene familiar to many fans of the series. Peter and the Grifn family visit a 1950s-themed diner, one that accommodates a number of parodic refer- ences to pop culture of the era. In a winking acknowledgment of how Family Guy (FOX, 1999–2002, 2005–present) courts young adult viewers, Lois explains to the Grifn children that 1950s-themed diners were very popular in the 1980s, well before many of the program’s targeted audience members were old enough to re- member them. As the Grifns are seated, they observe several period celebrity lookalikes working as servers in the restaurant. Marilyn Monroe and Elvis pass through before the bit culminates with a cut to James Dean “afer the accident,” his head mangled and his clothes in bloodied tatters.

FAMILY GUY: TEXTUAL DEVICES AND MASCULINE VICES by CARSON JUSTINE KLOSTERMAN MARTIN (Under the Direction of Christine Harold) ABSTRACT As the first animated situation comedy to be “uncancelled” due to its record breaking DVD sales, Family Guy is one in several contemporary animated sitcoms attracting a predominantly male audience. This project explores the attraction of this crude, politically incorrect satire of American suburbia to nineteen to thirty-four year old males. By exposing strategies of intertextuality and self-reflexivity, this project reveals that audiences are rewarded for media saturation. Further, in continuing a tradition of television portrayals of working-class men as foolish, childish, and unmanly, Peter Griffin’s character invites the audience to mock working-class stereotypes while simultaneously solidifying their subordinate status. This project attempts to add to the current discussion of animated situation comedy as well and working-class media representations.
