Renowned for his brilliant interpretations of organ literature and for his thrilling improvisations which are regularly included in his concert programs, Daniel Roth has concertized extensively throughout Europe, Great Britain, The United States, Scandinavia, Japan and Korea. A former student at the Paris Conservatory, his teachers include Marie-Claire Alain and Maurice Duruflé. He is the winner of several competitions, among them the Grand Prix de Chartres in 1971 for both interpretation and improvisation. Daniel Roth Mr. Roth is currently Titular Organist at the Church of St. Sulpice in Paris. Previous positions held include Titular Organist at the Basilique du Sacré Coeur in Paris, and Artist-in-Residence of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. In addition to his performing and church work, Mr. Roth is also a composer, and has written many works for organ solo, flute and organ, choir and organ and for orchestra. For his compositions he was awarded the Florent Schmitt prize awarded by the Académie des Beaux-Arts (Institut de France). Throughout his career Mr. Roth held many prestigious teaching positions, including posts at the Conservatory of Marseille, the Conservatory of Strasbourg, the Musikhochschule in Saarbrücken, and most recently Professor of Organ at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main until his retirement in 2007. He has numerous recordings to his credit on recording labels including Erato, Philips, Arion, Pathé-Marconi, EMI, Wergo, Motette-Ursina, Priory, Aeolus, and JAV Recordings. Several of his recordings have won the coveted “Diapason d’Or” award from the French magazine Diapason. Mr. Roth has earned the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, Officier des Arts et Letters, and he was named an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Organists in the UK. He was also awarded the “Europäische Kirchenmusik” prize by the Schwäbisch Gmünd Festival in Germany. Certains ont la souplesse de faire ces modifications, alors que d’autres par idéologie, restent fidèles à un Maître ou à une École. On ne passe jamais assez de temps à la recherche de tous les détails que comprend une œuvre musicale, ceux indiqués par le compositeur et ceux qui sont sous-entendus.

    AROSS: Association for the standing of Saint- Sulpice Cavaillé-Coll organs Saint-Sulpice Church, Paris The Church of St. Sulpice houses two exceptional instruments th constructed by the acclaimed organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811- Sunday 26 , May 2019 1899). With thoroughly preserved tonal and aesthetic designs, the choir organ (1858) and main organ (1862) are irreplaceable, serve as testimonies to the builder's art, and represent hallmarks of the organ French horn and organ world. Charged with the public promotion of these instruments, the concert “Association pour le rayonnement des orgues Aristide Cavaillé-Coll de l’église Saint-Sulpice, à Paris” (AROSS) organizes each year a series of concerts featuring international concert organists, choirs, orchestras, and other ensembles. For the 2019 season, AROSS has invited famous organists worldwide (Spain, Japan, Germany…). A narrator and choirs will also be featured, and of course, improvisation. Pas question pour autant d’« expédier » le postlude: la musique pour les fidèles avant tout ! Tant pis, il faudra courir jusqu’au métro et dans les couloirs de la gare de l’Est. Vous saluez les personnes présentes à la console, attrapez votre valise dans le salon Widor et descendez quatre à quatre les escaliers, laissant le soin à Hervé Lussigny d’éteindre les moteurs de l’orgue et de fermer la tribune. Ce dimanche, vous vous rendiez pour la dernière fois à la Musikhochschule de Francfort, mettant ainsi fin à plus de trente ans d’enseignement (et de trajets) vers Marseille, Strasbourg, Sarrebruck et donc Francfort. Depuis ce jour pourtant, on ne peut pas vraiment dire que vous soyez « à la retraite », pour autant que ce mot puisse avoir un sens pour ceux qui sont animés par la passion de transmettre. Il n’est qu’à vous entendre analyser (tout en jouant) une Toccata de Mufat par exemple ou bien signaler avec bienveillance à un organiste de pas- sage les accents indiqués par Vierne dans sa Toccata pour le constater… Chez vous, l’émerveillement est constant et le partage permanent… Les étudiants qui participent aux académies de San Sebastian ou aux masterclasses que vous animez ont la chance de continuer à béné- ficier de vos conseils et la participation à des jurys de concours vous donne l’occasion de garder un lien, si primordial pour vous, avec les jeunes générations.

    DANIEL ROTH Biography Daniel Roth has been widely acclaimed as one of the leading French organ virtuosos, and has held several prestigious positions as an artist and teacher. At age twenty he made his debut at the organ of the Basilique du Sacré Coeur in Paris, as assistant to his teacher Madame Falcinelli. He later succeeded her as Titular Organist, a post he held until 1985 when he was appointed Titular Organist at St. Sulpice, the famous Paris church where his predecessors were Charles- Marie Widor, Marcel Dupré and Jean-Jacques Grunenwald. From 1974 to 1976 Daniel Roth held the position of Artist-in-Residence of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. Upon his return to France, he resumed his teaching position at the Conservatory of Marseille, which he held until 1979 when he was appointed to the Conservatory of Strasbourg, a post he filled for nine years. From 1988 until summer, 1995, Mr. Roth taught at the Musikhochshule in Saarbrücken. He now is Professor of Organ at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main, succeeding Edgar Krapp and Helmut Walcha. A former student at the Paris Conservatory, his teachers have included Marie-Claire Alain and Maurice Duruflé. Daniel Roth has won several competitions, among them the Grand Prix de Chartres in 1971 for both interpretation and improvisation. He has concertized extensively in Europe, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Japan and Korea. He has made many tours of the United States and Canada since 1977.     Daniel Roth, organiste et compositeur Biographie par Thierry Adhumeau Daniel Roth naît à Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) le 31.X.1942. La profonde admiration qu’il voue à Albert Schweitzer, le célèbre médecin, théologien et organiste alsacien, le conduit vers des études de piano, d’orgue et d’écriture au Conservatoire de sa ville natale. Il les poursuit au CNSM de Paris, où il obtient cinq premiers prix dans les classes de Maurice Duruflé (harmonie, 1962), de Marcel Bitsch (contrepoint et fugue, 1963), de Rolande Falcinelli (orgue, interprétation et improvisation, premier nommé à l’unanimité, 1963) et d’Henriette Puig-Roget (accompagnement au piano, 1970). Après l’obtention de son prix d’orgue, il étudie l’interprétation de la musique ancienne et se prépare aux concours internationaux avec Marie-Claire Alain. Il est lauréat de plusieurs concours : Arnhem (1964), Amis de l’orgue-Paris (prix de haute exécution et d’improvisation, 1965), Munich (1966), Aosta (1970), et le premier grand prix de Chartres (interprétation et improvisation, 1971). Suppléant de Rolande Falcinelli au grand orgue de la Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, Paris, dès 1963, il est nommé titulaire de cet instrument en 1973, poste qu’il occupe jusqu’en 1985, lorsqu’il accède au grand orgue de Saint-Sulpice à la suite de Charles- Marie Widor, Marcel Dupré et Jean-Jacques Grunenwald. Daniel Roth has won several competitions, among them the Grand Prix de Chartres in 1971 for both interpretation and improvisation. From 1974 to 1976 Daniel Roth held the position of Artist-in-Residence of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. Upon his return to France, he resumed his teaching position at the Conservatory of Marseille, which he held until 1979 when he was appointed to the Conservatory of Strasbourg, a post he filled for nine years. From 1988 until the summer of 1995, Mr. Roth taught at the Musikhochshule in Saarbrücken; he then served as Professor of Organ at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main, succeeding Edgar Krapp and Helmut Walcha, until his retirement in 2007. Renowned for his brilliant interpretations of organ literature and for his thrilling improvisations which are regularly included in his concert programs, Daniel Roth has concertized extensively throughout Europe, Great Britain, The United States, Scandinavia, Japan and Korea.

At age twenty he made his debut at the organ of the Basilique du Sacré Coeur in Paris, as assistant to his teacher Madame Falcinelli.
