14 - The Carlebach Shul PRESIDENT’SPRESIDENT’SPRESIDENT’S MESSAGE LETTER LETTER ✍ ✍

Sweetest Friends:

We are about to close the books on the calendar year and we have what to reflect upon and what to look forward to. 2019 has been a good year for the US economy, with the unemployment rate at multi- year lows. Support for Israel by the current administration is strong. Domestic politics, however, have created schisms in our society, while terrorism and open threats to the Jewish community remain a real and serious concern. Going forward, we can expect 2020 to be filled, ad nauseum, with politics but at the end of the day, the people will have spoken and hopefully we will have a reprieve.

At the Carlebach Shul our issues are of a different nature. We are concerned with how to best transmit Judaism’s beautiful teachings and joyful approach to future generations. To that end, we will be redoubling our efforts with young professionals. We just hosted a beautiful dinner with over 120 people in attendance. Our thanks to Alex Broome for organizing the event. Stay tuned for other programs and dinners.

On the spiritual front, the Shul, for the first time, will have completed a full cycle of the Talmud as part of daf yomi, the daily study of a page of Gemara, both front and back. The study of Gemara connects us to the brilliant Rabbi Akiva, Rashi, the Gaon of Vilna, the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, Rabbi J.B. Soloveichik, Rav Aaron Soloveichik, and to untold future scholars. What an amazing legacy and heritage. While studying two pages of Talmud a day may not be for everyone, the completion of the Talmud will be celebrated around the world on January 1. We are proud to be part of that great happening which is a unifying force for the entire Jewish people. Reb Shlomo tells the story of an ignorant man who danced on Simchat Torah like no one else. When people asked him why he was dancing even though he didn’t study Torah, he responded, “If my brother were getting married, would I not dance? I’m dancing with and for everyone who does study the Torah.” So too, even those who don’t actually study the daily daf should join in celebrating this momentous occasion.

In addition to our daily daf yomi class, we are very honored that Rabbi Meir Fund has been teaching two classes every week for over 35 years. We also have our Sunday Yeshiva with Rabbi Avraham Newman and a new daily Yeshiva led by our Rabbi. Aside from teaching at the recently established Yeshiva, Rabbi Citron offers community classes on Shabbat afternoons and during the week. We encourage our members to take advantage of these and other learning opportunities.

Last, we wish to thank all those who contribute their time and energy to help sustain our special and holy institution.
