T HE J EWISH Q UARTERLY R EVIEW, Vol. 95, No. 1 (Winter 2005) 119–130 DAVID BIALE, ed. Cultures of the Jews: A New History. New York: .1196 ם Schocken Books, 2002. Pp. xxxiii Part One: Just Like Everyone Else, Only More So PAULA FREDRIKSEN Hard science deals with facts: it explains and successfully manipulates the physical universe. Its empirical successes attest to the validity of its truth-claims, and to the proximity (or identity) of its laws to and with Reality. Hard science is to facts as philosophy is to truth. Like its empirically REVIEW FORUM oriented sister, philosophy identifies what things really are (their es- sence) and how we truly know them (our epistemological foundations). Together, science and philosophy reveal the truths of the physical and the metaphysical universe. W RITING THE TWO preceding paragraphs just gave me the same guilty pleasure that I get when listening to classic soft-rock. Indeed, they are its intellectual equivalent. I had gotten through high school and even through college operating with these assumptions. Graduate school, in the mid-70s, hit hard. I read Kuhn. I read Wittgenstein. I watched friends in departments of English and in comparative literature spinning around as they encountered Derrida, de Man, Foucault, Lacan, Barthes. We all read cultural anthropology. The old definitions dissolved. The view from nowhere, whether scientific or philosophical, vanished. Only a welter of perspectives remained. Thirty years later, intellectually swamped as we are by the late twenti- eth century’s fervid overproduction of interpretive theories, a 1970s de- constructionist almost looks like a Litvak rabbi.

Ten-year-old Moshiko was saved by an organ transplant made possible by the Halachic Organ Donor Society Saving Lives n 1995, 20-year-old American Alisa Flatow died of her injuries following a terrorist Iattack in Israel. After consulting with Rabbi Moshe Tendler, a renowned Orthodox rabbi and an expert in biomedical ethics, her parents made the emotionally difficult but courageous decision to donate her organs for transplantation saving many lives. Alisa Flatow This highly publicized case was followed by organ donations from other Orthodox Jews, including J.J. Greenberg, Yoni Jesner and Tani Goodman. Nonetheless, a widespread misconception persists among Jews of all denominations, including secular Jews, that traditional Jewish law (i.e. Halacha) J.J. Greenberg categorically prohibits organ donation. As a result of this misunderstanding, Jews have one of the lowest organ donation rates of any ethnic group. Only 8 percent of Israel’s population are registered organ donors, as compared to 35 percent of the population in most Western countries. Yoni Jesner Meanwhile, the demand for organ transplants continues to increase. In the past decade, the number of Americans waiting for organs has grown from 27,000 to more than 100,000 today. More than 100 Israelis and 6,000 Americans die every year waiting for Tani Goodman an organ transplant. 2 www.hods.org www.hods.org 3 Halachic Organ Donor Society (Halacha is Hebrew for Jewish law; halachic is the adjective) The HOD* Society saves lives by increasing organ donation from Jews to the general population (including non-Jews). It does this by educating Jews about the medical and halachic issues concerning organ donation so their decision about being an organ donor will be based on a complete understanding of the issue.

  • Britain's Orthodox Jews in Organ Donor Card Row
UK Britain's Orthodox Jews in organ donor card row By Jerome Taylor, Religious Affairs Correspondent Monday, 24 January 2011 Reuters Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has ruled that national organ donor cards are not permissable, and has advised followers not to carry them Britain’s Orthodox Jews have been plunged into the centre of an angry debate over medical ethics after the Chief Rabbi ruled that Jews should not carry organ donor cards in their current form. London’s Beth Din, which is headed by Lord Jonathan Sacks and is one of Britain’s most influential Orthodox Jewish courts, caused consternation among medical professionals earlier this month when it ruled that national organ donor cards were not permissible under halakha (Jewish law). The decision has now sparked anger from within the Orthodox Jewish community with one prominent Jewish rabbi accusing the London Beth Din of “sentencing people to death”. Judaism encourages selfless acts and almost all rabbinical authorities approve of consensual live organ donorship, such as donating a kidney. But there are disagreements among Orthodox leaders over when post- mortem donation is permissible. Liberal, Reform and many Orthodox schools of Judaism, including Israel’s chief rabbinate, allow organs to be taken from a person when they are brain dead – a condition most doctors consider to determine the point of death. But some Orthodox schools, including London’s Beth Din, have ruled that a person is only dead when their heart and lungs have stopped (cardio-respiratory failure) and forbids the taking of organs from brain dead donors. As the current donor scheme in Britain makes no allowances for such religious preferences, Rabbi Sacks and his fellow judges have advised their followers not to carry cards until changes are made.

  • June 2017 /Sivan 5777
June 2017 /Sivan 5777 Common Questions Frum Patients Should Ask of Doctors Dear Reader: There are many situations in many areas of life in which halakha and medicine intersect, but this is especially so in the area of Taharat Hamishpakha, or family purity. In this issue, we will focus on some of the most common questions women ask a yoetzet halakha, for which she advises them to reach out to their doctors. Q: I recently started a new pill. I had one typical cycle, and then, when I came home from the mikvah, I started staining. What should I do? Is this normal? My doctor did say I might have some staining, but I have never stained before and am concerned. Should I call my doctor? A: Whenever a woman has a doubt about whether or not she should call her doctor, I would always advise her to call her doctor. Being in touch with the physician who knows the woman's medical history can be helpful; additionally, the doctor can track her concerns. If she calls again with the same concern, the doctor can remind her that she had spoken about it before and be particularly understanding that this is something she is very worried about. In this particular case, it would be important to note the following factors: Where was the staining, how much did she see, and where she is in her cycle when she saw it? If she is taking the active pills and she is wearing colored underwear, assuming she did not have an actual flow, she would not be in niddah.
