SARNA "Pues have never yet found an historian," John M. Neale com plained, when he undertook to survey the subject of church seating for the Cambridge Camden Society in 1842. 1 To a large extent, the same situation prevails today in connection with "pues" in the American syn agogue. Although it is common knowledge that American synagogue seating patterns have changed greatly over time - sometimes following acrimonious, even violent disputes - the subject as a whole remains unstudied, seemingly too arcane for historians to bother with. 2 Seating patterns, however, actually reflect down-to-earth social realities, and are richly deserving of study. Behind wearisome debates over how sanctuary seats should be arranged and allocated lie fundamental disagreements over the kinds of social and religious values that the synagogue should project and the relationship between the synagogue and the larger society that surrounds it. As we shall see, where people sit reveals much about what they believe. The necessarily limited study of seating patterns that follows focuses only on the most important and controversial seating innovation in the American synagogue: mixed (family) seating. Other innovations - seats that no longer face east, 3 pulpits moved from center to front, 4 free (un assigned) seating, closed-off pew ends, and the like - require separate treatment. As we shall see, mixed seating is a ramified and multifaceted issue that clearly reflects the impact of American values on synagogue life, for it pits family unity, sexual equality, and modernity against the accepted Jewish legal (halachic) practice of sexual separatiop in prayer. -

Courtesy of Rabbi Lamm and the Yad Lamm online drasha archiveof the Yeshiva University Museum. Two Themes of Hanukkah Two themes are central to the festival of Hanukkah which we welcome this week. They are, first, the nes milhamah, the miraculous victory of the few over the many and the weak over the strong as the Jews repulsed the Syrian-Greeks and reestablished their independence. The second theme is the nes shemmen, the miracle of the oil, which burned in the Temple for eight days although the supply was sufficient for only one day. The nes milhamah represents the success of the military and political enterprise of the Macabeeans, whilst the nes shemmen symbolizes the victory of the eternal Jewish spirit. Which of these is emphasized is usually an index to one’s Weltanschauung. Thus, for instance, secular Zionism spoke only of the nes milhamah, the military victory, because it was interested in establishing the nationalistic base of modern Jewry. The Talmud, however, asking, "What is Hanukkah?," answered with the nes shemmen, with the story of the miracle of the oil. In this way, the Rabbis demonstrated their unhappiness with the whole Hasmonean dynasty, descendants of the original Macabees who became Saducees, denied the Oral Law, and persecuted the Pharisees. Yet, it cannot be denied that both of these themes are integral parts of Judaism. Unlike Christianity, we never relegated religion to a realm apart from life; we never assented to the bifurcation between that which belongs to God and that which belongs to Ceasar. -

Ten-year-old Moshiko was saved by an organ transplant made possible by the Halachic Organ Donor Society Saving Lives n 1995, 20-year-old American Alisa Flatow died of her injuries following a terrorist Iattack in Israel. After consulting with Rabbi Moshe Tendler, a renowned Orthodox rabbi and an expert in biomedical ethics, her parents made the emotionally difficult but courageous decision to donate her organs for transplantation saving many lives. Alisa Flatow This highly publicized case was followed by organ donations from other Orthodox Jews, including J.J. Greenberg, Yoni Jesner and Tani Goodman. Nonetheless, a widespread misconception persists among Jews of all denominations, including secular Jews, that traditional Jewish law (i.e. Halacha) J.J. Greenberg categorically prohibits organ donation. As a result of this misunderstanding, Jews have one of the lowest organ donation rates of any ethnic group. Only 8 percent of Israel’s population are registered organ donors, as compared to 35 percent of the population in most Western countries. Yoni Jesner Meanwhile, the demand for organ transplants continues to increase. In the past decade, the number of Americans waiting for organs has grown from 27,000 to more than 100,000 today. John Hagee are ready to meet and discuss their differences—respectfully. The two religious leaders have been squaring off for the past week. Yoffie in a major speech called on Jews to dissociate themselves from Hagee and the organization he founded, Christians United for Israel, asserting that the pastor did not respect other faiths or the right of Israeli leaders to make territorial concessions. Hagee, a San Antonio-based evangelical mega-church leader and arguably the country’s most influential Christian Zionist, fired back in a conference call with reporters. “Rabbi Yoffie’s speech demonstrates not only a lack of respect for me but a troubling lack of respect for the truth,” he said. Hours after Hagee’s media call, however, both men were sounding a more conciliatory note. “I was told he was interested in meeting with me,” said Yoffie, the president of the Union of Reform Judaism, said. “I’d be delighted to sit down and talk to him.” Hagee’s spokesman, Juda Engelmayer, confirmed that the pastor was considering such a meeting. June 2017 /Sivan 5777 Common Questions Frum Patients Should Ask of Doctors Dear Reader: There are many situations in many areas of life in which halakha and medicine intersect, but this is especially so in the area of Taharat Hamishpakha, or family purity. In this issue, we will focus on some of the most common questions women ask a yoetzet halakha, for which she advises them to reach out to their doctors. Q: I recently started a new pill. I had one typical cycle, and then, when I came home from the mikvah, I started staining. What should I do? Is this normal? My doctor did say I might have some staining, but I have never stained before and am concerned. Should I call my doctor? A: Whenever a woman has a doubt about whether or not she should call her doctor, I would always advise her to call her doctor. Being in touch with the physician who knows the woman's medical history can be helpful; additionally, the doctor can track her concerns. If she calls again with the same concern, the doctor can remind her that she had spoken about it before and be particularly understanding that this is something she is very worried about. In this particular case, it would be important to note the following factors: Where was the staining, how much did she see, and where she is in her cycle when she saw it? If she is taking the active pills and she is wearing colored underwear, assuming she did not have an actual flow, she would not be in niddah. -
