RODRIGUES1 1Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade de São Paulo-SP and 2Departamento de Zoologia, Centro de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil ABSTRACT The tetrapod limb is a highly diverse structure, and reduction or loss of this structure accounts for many of the limb phenotypes observed within species. Squamate reptiles are one of the many tetrapod lineages in which the limbs have been greatly modified from the pentadactyl generalized pattern, including different degrees of reduction in the number of limb elements to complete limblessness. Even though limb reduction is widespread, the evolutionary and develop- mental mechanisms involved in the formation of reduced limb morphologies remains unclear. In this study, we present an overview of limb morphology within the microteiid lizard group Gymn- ophthalmidae, focusing on digit arrangement. We show that there are two major groups of limb- reduced gymnophthalmids. The first group is formed by lizard-like (and frequently pentadactyl) species, in which minor reductions (such as the loss of 1-2 phalanges mainly in digits I and V) are the rule; these morphologies generally correspond to those seen in other squamates. The second group is formed by species showing more drastic losses, which can include the absence of an ex- ternally distinct limb in adults. We also present the expression patterns of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) in the greatly reduced fore and hindlimb of a serpentiform gymnophthalmid. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of Bachia of the bresslaui group, Bachia geralista sp. nov., is described from Planalto dos Gerais, an old and partially dissected plateau extending along the Cerrados of Bahia, Minas Gerais and Tocantins states, Brazil. The new species is morphologically similar to B. bresslaui, with which it has been confused; however head scalation resembles other species from sandy spots within the Cerrado (B. psamophila and B. oxyrhina). Like in B. psamophila and B. oxyrhi- na, the shovel-shaped snout of the new species is highly prominent, a typical trait of psammophilous habits in other gym- nophthalmids. The examination of specimens of B. bresslaui from several populations within the Cerrado revealed great variation among localities, leading to the reidentification of a specimen from Utiariti, Mato Grosso, previously referred to in the literature as the second record of B. -

The new species morphologically resembles B. heteropa and B. guianensis. Nonetheless, the absence of interparietal and prefrontal scales, and the number of supraciliary scales, can distinguish the new species from its close relatives. This description increases the species diversity of the B. heteropa group after a number of decades of stasis in the taxonomy of this group in Amazonia. In addition, we present an updated key to the groups of Bachia, including the species and subspecies of the B. heteropa group. Key words: Amazon Forest; Bachia heteropa group; Brazil; Lizards; Taxonomy; Tumucumaque SPECIES within the Bachia heteropa group are distributed its hexagonal and imbricated dorsal scales, distinct from the in southern Central America (Costa Rica and Panama´), quadrangular dorsal scales found in B. flavescens. This northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, and specimen was collected in the extreme northwestern portion Guyana), and in some islands of the Lesser Antilles of Amapa´, during an expedition to the Montanhas do (Grenada, Grenadines, Trinidad, and Tobago; Dixon 1973; Tumucumaque National Park, which is one of the most Hoogmoed and Dixon 1977; McDiarmid and DeWeese remote regions of Brazilian Amazonia. -
